This Just In: The Reissue Swoon

Sharon Jones isn’t the only person giving the people what they want this week. Not Not Fun, Too Pure and Fat Possum are making listeners happy with some smart repress/reissue choices.

Peaking Lights – 936 LP:
*Limited repress – this will sell out!
“2009’s Imaginary Falcons was its own savvy slushpile of tape-hissy drift-dub haze pop, no question, but 936 takes every facet of the Peaking Lights mighty diamond and shines it even further. The songwriting is killer; ‘All The Sun That Shines,’ ‘Amazing & Wonderful,’ ‘Tiger Eyes (Laid Back),’ etc, all seep into yr mindstream and float there like melodic gold dust. Indra Dunis’ silky soul-jazz keys and tranced vocals have never sounded so exquisite, and Aaron Coyes busts out the best bass/drum loops and sneaky dub guitar of his musical lifetime. Recorded by Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios in Iowa City and mastered in Berlin, 936 retains the cool crate-digger grit of their earlier highlights, but within a much more vivid spectrum of sound.” -Not Not Fun

Electrelane – No Shouts, No Calls 2LP; The Power Out LP:
*Highly recommended by every Sweat employee!!!
Yes, I know these dropped last week, but hey, whatever. Reissues of the mighty Electrelane’s second and fourth albums, (hey, where’s Axes?). Their debut, Rock It To The Moon, was this instuemental, kraut-ey thing that ultimately grew into a concrete-poetic, post-punk monster on subsequent records. These are albums full of clever covers, calculated paces, and hidden, at-home-dance-party-jams. Such a small body of work from a sadly short-lived band, but damn, at least they never made a bad record. -MLE

Self – Subliminal Plastic Motives LP:
*The thirteen-year-old in me is swooning!
Come on, y’all remember that “Cannon” song from ’95, right? What about “So Low”? Despite Self’s radio and pseudo-mainstream success, this album opened the doors for lots of modern rock radio-listening kids to seek some outside-the-box music. Self’s show at the Chili Pepper back in the day was the first show I went to without my parents (“wow, they’re saying ‘fuck’ on stage?!?”). I thought I was cool as hell… and I still have the ticket stub. -MLE
