This Just In: Pre-Projects, Side Projects

Some people never sleep, especially creative types. So it’s no wonder some of the most prolific musicians can’t stick to one project. Hell, some can’t stick to less than five. This week we’ve got in pre- and side projects from some must-be insomniacs. And if you can’t sleep either, check out our long list of new releases, reissues and restocks to keep you company late into the night.

Coachwhips – Hands On The Controls LP:
“Castle Face Records is proud to announce the re-release of Hands on the Controls by the late, great sweat-’n’-fun factory Coachwhips. For those unfamiliar, pull up a chair—helmed by John Dwyer (currently of Thee Oh Sees) from 2001-2005, they were fast, nasty, unintelligible, brutally and primally basic. A telephone through a guitar amp, half a drum kit, a shitty Casio organ, and primal speed-trash riffs never sounded so good.  Hands on the Controls was their first studio album and criminally never came out on vinyl—until now. Dwyer has kindly opened the crypt and added six never-before-released tracks to sweeten the deal, and the label remastered the tracks for maximum bludgeon, cleaned up the artwork and even added some period photos from his own personal collection. Early ditties like ‘That Bitch Is Gonna End Up Dead,’ ‘N.Y.C. L.O.V.E.,’ and my girlfriend’s personal favorite, ‘Look Into My Eyes When I Come,’ will leap off of your turntable, do all of your drugs, and almost certainly get you in trouble.”

Fuzz – Sunderberry Dream 7”:
“The latest offering from the soon-to-be legendary Fuzz comes as the band releases their self-titled debut full-length on In The Red. Sunderberry Dream features two non-album cuts, the second of which is a cover of King Crimson’s ’21st Century Schizoid Man.’ Fuzz is Roland Cosio (bass), Charlie Moothart (guitar) and Ty Segall (drums and vocals).”

Unwound – Kid Is Gone 3LP:
Kid Is Gone is the unquiet portrait of primal Unwound. Before 1993’s Fake Train ripped through, they’d been Giant Henry, Supertanker, and Cygnus X-1, short-lived black holes gathering dark material into something built to explode. From Justin Trosper, Vern Rumsey, and Brandt Sandeno’s first restive years, ‘Crab Nebula’ might’ve best prepared the indie-sphere for what Unwound became, had Sandeno’s split not stalled their planned debut. Part 1 in Numero’s 4-part reissue project, Kid Is Gone documents signal chaos in Olympia’s fertile scene before Unwound’s turbulent noise hit stride, in unrevealed period photos, 34 tracks, and three LPs—cassette-only demos, early 7”s, a KAOS radio broadcast, material tracked live in a local basement, and all of what became 1994’s Unwound, on which the band’s prehistory plays out in a feral maelstrom of screaming, distortion, feedback, and abrasive promise.”
