This Just In: While Away…

Aaaaand I’m back from my trip out west. There was a slight lull in new stock hitting the shelves, but now we’re super-duper stocked up and officially open seven days a week! This week there are new releases from a couple of the bands I got to see at Pickathon 2013 – one you’ve definitely heard of and one, maybe not. Check them out along with the massive list of stuff in this week.

Ty Segall – Sleeper LP, CD:
“What’s most impressive about Sleeper, then, is that Ty Segall still has some surprises up his sleeve, shocking you this time out with what’s his most subtle and vulnerable work yet. As much as we’ve heard from Segall the last couple of years, we haven’t really heard him like this before, as he builds much of this new effort around his resonant acoustic guitar play. Indeed, anyone who thinks you know what you’ll get from Segall on Sleeper will likely be blown away by the up-close-and-personal tone that kicks off the album on the title-track opener, his lush unplugged strumming no doubt eliciting its fair share of admiring head shaking for living up to expectations by defying them. And that’s before the melancholy strings come in to join the steely guitar shimmer, more evocative in its poignant tone than the visceral thrill you typically get with Segall’s staggering garage rock. If his last outing Twins was Segall’s most fleshed out, Sleeper turns out be his most meticulous, considering the framework he’s working in is more immediate and requires more touch than you might’ve thought such a rambunctious and mercurial artist possessed.” -PopMatters

Pure Bathing Culture – Moon Tides LP, CD:
“The album title Moon Tides alludes to self-discovery: ‘We are deeply inspired by the relationship between the moon and the tides. Particularly in the sense that the tides and the ocean are comprised of water and the element water is often associated with human emotion.’ While these heady themes can be difficult to explore in a pop song, Pure Bathing Culture makes it feel effortless. ‘Pendulum’ is a perfect mid-tempo album opener that pulses and shines. Other standout tracks from the album — ‘Dream The Dare,’ ‘Twins,’ ‘Scotty’ and ‘Golden Girl’ — are slices of reverb-drenched, soulful, danceable electro-pop, that musically and lyrically tap into an introspective worship of the natural and psychic mysteries that surround us. Pure Bathing Culture’s debut album Moon Tides is optimistic modern music for souls who seek to explore the infinite.” -Partisan Records
