CINEMA SOUNDS #12: SCIENCE SOUNDS!!!
BANDS IN A MOVIE THEATER
Now that ROOFLESS RECORDS’ most popular live music series has made its dauntless return to O-CINEMA IN WYNWOOD (with C.S. #11 in March), its time to introduce new parameters to the cross-medium collision of bands and big screens. For the first time in Cinema Sounds history, the featured musicians will be required to score films and footage relevant to a specific theme. Our inaugural theme is SCIENCE.
Performing original scores to science fact and fiction live in the theater at O:
ROMULO DEL CASTILLO
CEO and flagship artist of the SCHEMATIC record label. In the late 90s and early 00s, the music that Del Castillo promoted, released, and composed himself helped define the sound of international IDM (“Intelligent Dance Music”). His appearance at CINEMA SOUNDS #12 is an exceptionally rare live appearance, and may very well be the artists first performance under his own name (previous projects include PHOENICIA and SOUL ODDITY).
IRONING (Gainesville, FL)
Andrew Chadwick is a modern-day John Cage that utilizes myriad forms of outmoded audio technology (vinyl records, cassette tape, microcassettes) to create pastiche-collage-concrete compositions informed equally by academic minimalism and candy-coated pop culture lust.
THE JELLYFISH BROTHERS
This trio – comprised of actual brothers Eddy and Greg Alvarez, with SHROUD EATER bassist, Janette Valentine – is Miami’s best psych / garage / surf / party rock ‘n roll outfit since THE JACUZZI BOYS.
Avant-garde composition + drone + mind music.
CINEMA SOUNDS is founded upon the use of familiar materials to produce a fresh, novel spectacle. In this arrangement, the viewer’s experience of the theater space is altered dramatically as the larger-than-life imagery of a movie-house collides with the sonic immersion of a rock venue. The opportunity to provide a live score presents the selected musicians with new, challenging parameters for writing and performing original material. The results are always thrilling.
