This Just In: Three-Day Weekend Wonders

It’s gonna be a three-day weekend for some of you. What better way to spend that extra day than immersed in RPM’s? I’ll keep this section brief, because on Tuesday the 13th, there will be a bonus, extra special, magical mystery edition of “This Just In” not to be missed! Let’s get to it…

RZA/Various – Man With The Iron Fists OST LP:
As the producer and organizing force behind the Wu-Tang, RZA brings together the styles of many of his former crewmembers. The young Boy Jones even shows up in place of his late father, Ol’ Dirty Bastard (he’s performed ODB’s parts with Wu-Tang in the past). And this is just one of several cross-generational collaborations. RZA himself shares the mic with psychedelic Brooklyn hip-hop group Flatbush Zombies, while Wiz Khalifa collaborates with none other than Ghostface Killah. The album’s biggest genre mashup, meanwhile, reunites RZA with The Black Keys (the two previously collaborated on rap-rock album Blakroc). Filling out the eclectic remainder of the album are a hit ’60s single from Motown pioneer Mable John, some Cantopop from Hong Kong chanteuse Frances Yip, and some contemporary R&B courtesy of Corinne Bailey Rae and Tre Williams. Altogether, it ain’t nothin’ to mess with.” -Slate

Cop City/Chill Pillars – Hosed LP:
“Black robes, torches, mind-control, mock human sacrifice rituals, and worship of Moloch the ancient Canaanite deity. These are just some of the images conjured up by ‘Hosed,’ the long awaited follow-up from Lake Worth Florida’s own Cop City Chill Pillars. ‘Hosed’ takes things to its next logical conclusion with even more rhythmic messing about and lots more monotonous chanting. They don’t really sound like any other band, but feel free to make whatever musical comparisons you like. Hint: A-Frames, (Hardcore) Devo, Plastic People of the Universe, Jeff Mills.” –Floridas Dying

Sweet Tea/Wendy Rene – After Laughter 7”:
Part of Light In The Attic’s 10-year anniversary colored 7” series, and the only way to get Wendy Rene’s “After Laugher” on a 45 without forking over your entire paycheck!

“Alex Maas of the Black Angels and Erika Wennerstrom / Jesse Ebaugh of Heartless Bastards (under the band name Sweet Tea) cover Wendy Rene’s ‘After Laughter Comes Tears,’ preserving its creepy organ and tortured soul but adding deep bass and raw power. Rene’s original – beloved of Wu Tang Clan, who sampled it on ‘Tearz’ – was one of a handful of timeless soul songs she recorded with The Drapels and solo for Stax before retiring prematurely to raise a family. A side is produced by Alex Maas / Brett Orrison and recorded at Out The Woodwork Studios, Austin, TX, July 2012. B side features the original Wendy Rene version as remastered by John Baldwin for our anthology After Laughter Comes Tears: Complete Stax & Volt Singles + Rarities 1964-1965.” -LITA
