Come to the Rachel Goodrich in-store Saturday night at Sweat and we’ll announce the winner at the show! We’ll post the winner on this blog on Saturday (not Friday, sorry!) after the event. See you there!
As most of you know by now, Sweat Records is a proud recipient of a 2009 Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Had we ever applied for a grant before? Nope. Not once. Ever.
Still, that didn’t stop us from winning a ton of funding that will help Sweat continue for years to come! So pay attention everyone, because application time is coming around again and it starts this Friday.
The Knight Arts grant is amazing because they really do start with an even playing field. They are just as happy to fund an indie or solo project as they are to give money to some of Miami’s largest arts organizations. If you have a great idea that will bring more art, entertainment, education, music, etc. to South Florida, by all means get writing.
The other night Sweat Records was featured on PBS’ esteemed Nightly Business Report show in a piece about the resurgence of vinyl! We’re beyond happy to be representing for records and if you haven’t been by the shop lately, we’ve expanded our new LP section by about double over the last month.
Watch the video below and come by Sweat to peruse all the vinyl goodies for yourself!
The holiday season is here and we’ve been stocking Sweat up with all sorts of great gifts and goodies. HUGE thanks to David Tamargo for his great help in whipping this up and Notorious Nastie for starring as our Santa and perfectly illustrating how Sweat can prevent YOU from making a horrible decision. Give your loved ones the gift of good taste…
Here’s our holiday hours:
Noon to 5pm Christmas Eve
CLOSED Christmas to 12/27
Noon to 10pm 12/28-12/30
Noon to 5pm New Years Eve
CLOSED New Years Day
Next Wednesday, December 23rd is our annual Sweat Stocking Stuffer at the shop! It’s just a small intimate event for our friends and fans, with complimentary libations, soy nog and holiday treats, super discounts on CDs and LPs, music, merriment and more. It’ll be from 7pm to 11 so we hope to see you there! (more…)

Click the link to listen to a radio piece from Miami’s NPR affiliate – WLRN 91.3 FM – about how our little ol’ indie record shop won an arts grant alongside the biggest, most awesome cultural institutions in Miami!
They let us know a few weeks ago but we can finally spread the word – SWEAT RECORDS WON A KNIGHT ARTS CHALLENGE GRANT!
It was announced this morning that we’ll be receiving (deep breath) ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS to make South Florida even more awesome!!!!
The funding comes from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge – a five-year, $40 million initiative to bring South Florida together through the arts.
Needless to say we are beyond excited, overwhelmed, and grateful. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support the community has given us and we can’t thank all of you enough.
We also see this as a pivotal endorsement of our work forging a new role for “the record store” in today’s society and music industry. Just as bands can no longer sit back and wait to get signed, record stores can no longer solely rely on selling physical merchandise to stay viable. We know this and that’s why we’re going to celebrate our 5-year anniversary this April!
In addition to Sweat, 19 other South Florida artists, organizations and institutions were awarded today. Go to the Knight Arts Challenge site and watch the video below to learn more about this year’s winners:
In the coming months we’ll keep you posted on what Knight-related projects and store improvements we’re working on. Here’s the main gist:
Summary: This grant will help Sweat Records, a store and community resource that offers live performances, film screenings and an art gallery, strengthen and expand its cultural offerings. Sweat Records will hold additional workshops on a variety of cultural and educational topics. In addition, Sweat Records will develop an e-commerce site showcasing music and other goods made in South Florida.
Applicant: Sweat Records was established in 2005 in order to unite and strengthen Miami’s growing independent music scene. After surviving Hurricane Wilma destroying its first location, Sweat has settled into its permanent home: a full storefront, organic coffee bar and event space next door to Churchill’s Pub in Little Haiti. Sweat supports local artists and presents over 100 diverse events every year to further enrich Miami’s cultural offerings. Visit www.sweatrecordsmiami.com.
Thank you Knight Foundation and thank you all so, so, SO much.
