    Second Saturdays: Worth The HYPE!

    posted by Lolo

Tomorrow night during Second Saturdays Gallery Walk there is a TON of cool stuff going on.  Here are three events that are sure to be worthwhile:

At the De La Cruz Gallery (23 NE 41st St.), Psychic Youth, Inc. present the third installment of their TRI installation series.  Federico Nessi, Ana Mendez and Aja Albertson will inhabit the space from 7-10pm.  Afterward, head over to Bar (28 NE 14th St.) for Psychic Second Saturdays with DJs Nuit, R3K+ and Richard V. spinning dark yet danceable post-punk and beyond.

At the Cafeina Gallery (297 NW 23rd St.), check out the opening night of the CRYSTAL MONOLITHS group show!  The reception is from 8-12 and the show features work by Francesco LoCastro, Santiago Rubino and more.  Full info here.

Last but certainly not least, make your way over to Eazy Street Gallery (3501 NW 2nd Ave.) to BELIEVE THE HYPE! It’s the second installment of a group show that happened at the Bold Hype Gallery in Orlando last September.  This massive Miami version is curated by Dustin Orlando (Objex!) and features an array of “urban contemporary, pop surrealist, mixed media and kill or be killed street artists from around the world.”

Your 10 bucks at the door includes free cocktails all night, giveaways, tunes by DJ Keen One, and ANR will be playing a special Sweatstock warm-up set!  Watch the promo video below and don’t miss the awesomeness all around us this Saturday night.

    FLOOR.

    posted by Lolo

Legendary Miami band FLOOR reunites tonight at Churchill’s for what is sure to be an epic(ly loud) show.  The press release for the show does a better job of explaining than we could so read on, RSVP on Facebook and see you tonight!

Celebrating the release of their “Below & Beyond” box set, FLOOR will be getting back together to play four shows in the southeast. In keeping with the chronology and theme of the box set, the shows will reflect the lineups of each era of the band: Betty will be playing drums for songs from the early days, followed by Jeff on drums from the Dove era, and end with Henry stomping his way through the Floor album. And, of course, Steve and Anthony on vocals and guitars.
FLOOR was formed in 1992 by Steve Brooks (guitar), Anthony Vialon (bass), and Betty Monteavaro (drums). Jeff Sousa became the drummer in late 1993, at which time Steve and Anthony switched to two low-tuned guitars with no bassist. Early influences included MELVINS and GODFLESH, later developing their own sound of melodic, pop-infused doom. Several vinyl-only 7″ EPs were released before their first break in 1996. The band reformed with a new lineup for one show in 1997 with Henry Wilson on drums and practiced only occasionally until 2001. 2002 saw the release of their first full-length album, self-titled Floor, before splitting in 2003 for good.

    Sweat’s WMC Week Plans

    posted by Lolo

WMC week is upon us, and while we promised ourselves we wouldn’t take on too much as we’re busy preparing for SWEATSTOCK, we’re still involved in or excited to be attending some pretty awesome stuff this week!

Wednesday night you’ll find us at Purdy for the Off The Radar/(786) WMC Showcase with Boy Crisis and/or the Nite Jewel/Tanlines/MillionYoung more show at Grand Central.  Win tickets to Nite Jewel right here on the Sweat blog!

Thursday during the day are two fine options… 1) We’ll be chillin’ The Standard from 3-8pm with a few crates of records at the Vinyl Collective event!  Come out for free Red Stripe Light and to buy or swap some wax.

    2) Thursday at Sweat, the WATCHMEN WMC Showcase will be in the house, with their crew presiding over the turntables from 4-10pm.  Full info on the flier below or you can have their 3D/DJ tell you about it…

Thursday night the Get Low crew will be at the massive Smog Vs Basshead dubstep event over at the White Room.

For those who don’t give a damn about WMC, Thursday night there’s a sweet show at Churchill’s with The Fresh & Onlys (San Fran), The Jacuzzi Boys, Woven Bones (Austin) and BEINGS.  Starts at 9pm and cover is $7.  Anything can happen, but we’re pretty sure you won’t see any glow sticks here.

Our main event!  Friday night we are extremely happy to be co-presenting FIXED LOVES DURRR at The Vagabond!!!!  The UK’s EROL ALKAN returns as Disco 3000, along with Aeroplane (Belgium – who made our favorite remix last year), Rory Phillips, live sets by Pink Skull + Jessica 6 (formerly of Hercules and Love Affair), Dave P, JDH, and LA’s CLASSIXX, who were hands-down one of the best guest DJs we’ve ever brought to The Vagabond.

This is going to be an insanely awesome night – great music with no velvet rope hassle.  The New Times already named it one of their Editor’s Picks for best WMC parties.  Advance tickets are only $15 and available right here.

Btw, you can peep The Vagabond’s full line-up of WMC events including their annual parties with Louie Vega + John Digweed and buy tickets here.

Also Friday and Saturday of course, is the mother-of-all-WMC-events: ULTRA.  Orbital, Passion Pit, Faithless, Major Lazer, tons of dubstep, Green Velvet, Afrobeta… You know we’ll be there.

Sunday, if we’re still alive, we’ll be back at The Vagabond for a night with the godfather of electrofunk - AFRIKA BAMBAATAA!  Tickets are only $10 in advance.

Have a great week everyone and BE SAFE!  When in doubt, have an extra bottle of water and call a cab.  Love!

    Sweat’s 5-Year + Record Store Day 2010 = SWEATSTOCK!

    posted by Lolo

Dear friends, it’s hard to believe but Sweat Records is about to turn FIVE FREAKIN’ YEARS OLD!  On Saturday, March 12th, 2005 Sweat opened its doors for the first time to the cheers of music-loving Miamians and has kept the spirit alive ever since.

So mark your calendars for ***SWEATSTOCK*** ON SATURDAY, APRIL 17th!* We’re celebrating and giving back by throwing a FREE, ALL-AGES BLOCK PARTY with live music, food, friends and more, and we are excited as all get-out to finally announce that the headliner of this lil’ festival will be

    NO AGE (Sub Pop Records)!!!!!!

They rock live and we know you’ll love them (and we’re sure they’ll love our vegan cupcakes).  If you haven’t heard them, take a listen on myspace, read some reviews, or check our their blog.

Joining them on the main stage will be some of Miami’s best live acts including ANR, The Jacuzzi Boys, Otto Von Schirach and more TBA, with more Sweat elements in the mix with the Casa De Ha-Ha comedians, a Pure Imagination reading, aquatic projections by Morphologic Studios and beyond!  We’ll be announcing more details as the event gets closer.

This third Saturday in April is also the 3rd annual international RECORD STORE DAY so we’ll have all the amazing releases available exclusively to independent record stores.  We’ll be opening early at 10am that day for the RSD crowd.  Learn more about the holiday and the insane limited edition releases coming out on their website.

I know we’ll say it again but thank you all so much for five incredible years.  If you want to get involved or volunteer for Sweatstock, please send us an email!

*Fun fact: a few years ago we started celebrating in April to factor in the time we were closed post-hurricane and to avoid WMC and then-Langerado madness. Now you know.

    Rachel Goodrich Video Contest WINNER(S)

    posted by Lolo

First off, sorry for the delay.  The event itself Saturday night was a bit overwhelming as it was the single most packed event we’ve ever had at the store.  It was also ridiculously hard to choose a winner so thank you all for giving us and Rachel a break.

Second, we’d like to thank each and every filmmaker who participated in this contest.  We received 37 entries from all over the world and even better than getting all these great videos was that nearly every email we received told of how much fun was had making them.  On to what you’ve been waiting for…

CONGRATS to polyethyleneguy, Lucas Leyva and frorojas1 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize, respectively! We (Rachel + Sweat) will be awarding cash to all three entries and are even pitching in extra because they were all great in their own ways and we think all were worthy of praise, YouTube hits, cash money and love.

Watch all three videos below, and thanks again.  Stay tuned for more giveaways (FriendsWithYou art + Henry Rollins tickets this week!), contests and more from Sweat.

    polyethyleneguy’s piñata:

LucasLeyva’s thugged-out version…. In much the same way that Rachel’s sound isn’t the kind of music you’d expect to come out of Miami, Lucas’ video was definitely NOT what you’d expect to see go along with her music, but it works to hilarious effect.

Fro Rojas’ adorable kid-filled romp with cameos from FriendsWithYou toys and Crayola crayons (nice):

    Thanks again everyone!

    Miami Book Fair International XXVI

    posted by Lolo

    Bookworms unite!

2009 will be the 26th year of the world-renowned Miami Book Fair International.  Perhaps some of us take it for granted because it’s right in our backyard, but this is a really big deal!  From now through Sunday the Downtown fair will be hosting a non-stop onslaught of authors, readings, workshops, expos and more, with the book-vendor-filled street fair running all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are some truly AWESOME authors and speakers this year – Al Gore, the Daily Show’s John Hodgman, Melvin Van Peebles, Jonathan Lethem and our personal favorite for obvious reasons, Iggy Pop and Robert Matheu talking about the newly released authorized biography of The Stooges!

The bigger events require tickets which are FREE, you just have to reserve them at the Miami Book Fair’s site.  Check out the fair’s full line-up, there really is something for everyone.

    Borscht Film Festival Update

    posted by Andrew

It’s official: the 2009 Borscht Film Festival has secured the Gusman Theatre for Saturday, November 28th and it’s going to be one helluva party.  Borscht is a celebration of art, movies and all things 305.  Every year, Borscht curates an irreverent collection of locally produced short films.

Best of all, it’s always free.  This year, with help from the Miami World Cinema Center,  Borscht has produced 5 films as part of the ‘CCCV Stories,’ each one focused on a specific neighborhood.

WLRN’s flagship show ArtStreet recently profiled the Borscht Film Festival and has agreed to pre-release the segment here for your edification.* Enjoy!

*Shameless self-promotion: I work for the Borscht Film Festival and I produced this segment for WLRN.)
