    Tomorrow: October’s BIKE MIAMI DAYS

    posted by Lolo

We can all feel it…the weather is finally starting to cool down!

So it’s great timing that tomorrow, BIKE MIAMI DAYS returns to downtown!  Parts of E. Flagler and SE 2nd Ave., basically from Bayfront to Brickell, will be closed to cars so that cyclists, pedestrians, skaters and beyond can tool around and explore the city without fear of being run over.  It’s really a wonderful thing the city does so check it out!  They have bike rentals, mini tune-ups, giveaways and all sorts of other activities going on.  There’s even a Bike Valet if you want to check your bike and walk around.

Plus, Afrobeta, Suenalo, Electric Bond and more will be performing live!  Sounds like a super Sunday to us.  Click the pic for Bike Miami’s website or read more on the Miami Bike Scene blog.

    Happy Sweaty Yoga News

    posted by Lolo

Huge congrats to Sweaty Yoga instructor Fernando and his wife Judy who welcomed a bouncing baby boy into the universe this week!

Baby Kian Andres is doing fine but Fern will be taking the night off from teachin’ yoga tonight.

Class will still go on though and so this evening’s Sweaty Yoga instructor will be yours truly.  I got certified to teach a few years ago and though I haven’t used it much lately, I still practice regularly.

Also music-wise, DJing at clubs is fun but I never get to play all the awesome chill music I have, so I’m excited to make a special downtempo mix for tonight. Expect smoove tracks by Boards of Canada, Hooverphonic, Doves, Junior Boys, Kings of Convenience, Massive Attack and more…

Show up just before 7.30pm with a mat, some water and some clothes you can move in.  It’s recommended not to eat an hour or two before class too as doing forward bends on a full stomach isn’t the best idea.  Feel free to leave any questions in the comments but tonight’s class will be worthwhile for yoga virgins and experienced posers (heh) alike.

    Namaste and see you tonight!

    “Yoga For IDM Lovers” Tonight

    posted by Lolo

IDwhat?  IDM is sort of a silly term (it stands for “intelligent dance music”) sometimes used to describe a wide array of electronic sounds that range from experimental to danceable to ambient and beyond.

It started in the UK but in case ya hadn’t heard, Miami is one of the few US cities that has always had a strong connection and scene for this kind of electronic music, with the world-renowned Schematic label based here, WVUM’s “Electric Kingdom” show that’s been running for years, local star Otto Von Schirach, the experimental Subtropics festival and more!  Thanks to that from high school on I got to see amazing rare shows like Autechre, Orbital, Matmos, and all the local players many times over.

Photobucket(This won’t happen to you if you do your yoga right!)

Since we are relaxing tonight, expect the tunes to lean in the ambient direction!  From instructor Fernando:

This weeks Sweaty Yoga at Sweat Records is themed “Yoga for IDM Lovers!” Come and hear ambient snippets of Phoenecia, Richard Devine, Otto Von Shirach, Autechre and Plaid in a way you’ve never heard before! As always, the music is a backdrop for a relaxing, gentle series of poses intended for beginners looking to open themselves physically, creatively.

Bring a mat and a towel and we’ll see you tonight!

Sweaty Yoga is Thursdays from 7.30 to 8.45pm, $5

    Thursday: Sweaty Yoga at Sweat!

    posted by Lolo

Friends, yogis and yoginis!  We are taking advantage of the store’s current AC-less state and will be hosting Sweaty Yoga at Sweat this Thursday evening!

Our friend Fernando is a professional instructor and he’ll guide us all through a relaxing series of poses and stretches.

We’ll clear out the center space and mop the floors down with an organic cleaner shortly before class.  Then we’ll turn the lights down, spark up our favorite incense and get our stretch on!  Cold water and iced herbal teas will be available.  It’s only $5, a bargain for a full-on class, so we hope to see you there!

If you’ve never tried a yoga class, come out for the most relaxing workout you ever had.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments (a few years ago I got my yoga teaching certification myself so I know a thang or two).  Namaste!

Bike Miami RIDE This Sunday in MiMo

    posted by Lolo

Since it’s hot as blazes during the summer, the Bike Miami people have switched it up by planning some group rides through our beautiful city.

This Sunday, meet up at 8.30am at Legion Park on 64th and Biscayne for a quick bicycle safety lesson. After that the group will take off and enjoy a breezy ride through the MiMo district, Little Haiti, Buena Vista, the Design District and Edgewater.  At the end there will be a lunch at a place TBD and of course, all are welcome to attend this ride.

For more info check out the Bike Miami Blog.

Btw, big ups to the organizers, stuff like this makes Miami more awesome!

Bike Miami Days Are The Best Days

    posted by Lolo

Yesterday morning I woke up early and went down to Coconut Grove for this month’s Bike Miami. It takes a lot to get me out of bed on my only day off but it was so worth it! Bike Miami isn’t a race or a ride, it’s just a giant free block party with all the blocks closed off to cars so you can tool around and “explore your city in a new way.”  I don’t have a bike but I rented one for free at the event and walked around a lot too as it was a beautiful day.

The meeting point was at Peacock Park and most of the main streets were car-free and just so nice to ride on without the fear of being flattened by a SUV driver in the middle of a heated cell phone conversation.  The mayor, police chief, and tons of city people were there, plus tons of families, spandex cyclists, “fixies”, rollerbladers, skateboarders, runners, and everyone else you can think of. Honor Roll Music hosted the stage at the park with performances by ANR and Airship Rocketship. There was also a huge contingency there in orange representing the Netherlands Consulate – the Dutch practically are born bicycling so they’re all about supporting bike culture in Miami. Great pics are up here: Coconut Grove Grapevine

If you haven’t heard, Bike Miami Days are part of the city’s new initiatives to promote bicycle-oriented events, add more bike lanes, and to generally make the city more bike-friendly, which it should be as it’s so goddamn gorgeous down here all year round.  Props to Kathryn Moore and Collin Worth for making all this happen.

The whole day was inspiring. I’m now on the lookout for a sweet, two-wheeled ride of my own so I can represent at all the future Bike Miami Days, the next one being Downtown on Sunday, May 17th.  Purple-and-turquoise Sweat bike crew anyone??

P.S. More bike lanes are indeed in the works, but in the meantime, don’t you want one of these?
