    Sweat’s Art Basel Week 2009

    posted by Lolo

You ask, you receive!  Here’s the run-down of everything we’re presenting or a part of during this year’s Art Basel week festivities:

Thursday, December 3rd: For the first time in Miami, (((SHAKE))) presents a live New Orleans Bounce performance by Big Freedia with DJs Rusty Lazer and Brooklyn’s Dirty Finger! Be the first to get the 2010 Miami’s Finest Calendar and display your Major League Dreidel skills! RSVP to shake305@gmail.com for free admission until midnight!

Friday, December 4th: It’s the opening night for our big in-store exhibit – Sweat Records is proud to present “First Five Years” by Iron Forge Press!  We’ll post the full run-down on this later but the reception is at the store from 7-10pm with music, complimentary cocktails and many of the prints will be available to take home for cheap!

Then later at Fridays at The Vagabond, we’re extremely excited to present a live performance by NYC electro duo TELEPATHE!!!!  These girl’s snythy electro jams have had our heads nodding around Sweat HQ for a while so we are super psyched to present them live. Click the pic to listen, read more, and come out Friday – it’s only $5 before 11pm and we’ve still got our $1 beers until midnight!

    Sunday, December 6th: We SLEEP.

    See you out and about!

    Miami Becomes a Purple City!

    posted by Jsin

That’s what electro pop darling Little Boots sounds like drenched in purple. The producer who remixed this song goes by the name of Joker. His soulful, synthy, Sega style comes from a purple picture he sees in his head before creating the music. At only 20 he’s already made a huge impact in the underground music scene, being named “2008 Producer of the Year” by none other than Pitchfork.

Tomorrow night the Bristol native comes to Miami for the first time to play Shake! Whether you’ve been to them all or you somehow haven’t attended yet, this is the Get Low you’ve been waiting for. It’s already been hyped on the Miami New Times Crossfade blog and the Miami Dubsteppers are ready to go with new shirts for sale!

    Next Week’s In-Store Events

    posted by Lolo

Another great week of in-stores coming up, try to come out to a couple of these!  They are all free or cheap because we love you.

Monday, November 2nd: Movie Mondays presents a screening of Hedwig and the Angry Inch!  Hedwig is one of the best music movies of our generation, and last week’s in-store with Jay Brannan reminded us how much we love John Cameron Mitchell… Seating at 8pm, film at 8.30.  (Fear not, the Mighty Boosh-a-thons will continue with Season 2 on Monday, 11/23)

    Photobucket

Tuesday, November 3rd: All the way from Brooklyn the “November 2009 Homeland Tour” brings pop punk group THE HOMEWRECKERS to Miami (featuring Miami ex-pat and zine/graphic illustrator Cristy C. Roads)!  Listen at myspace.com/wewreckhomes.  Not only that, but joining them on the bill is a special appearance by Jose El Rey & The Love Doctors of Sexy!

Thursday, November 5th: NYC singer-songwriter-ukulele-master EMILYN BRODSKY rolls into town for a set at Sweat!  Her album, Greatest Tits, was produced by Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls and she’s opened for the likes of The Gossip, The Magnetic Fields, The Decemberists, The Hold Steady, Against Me!, Kimya Dawson, Ani and more.  Listen here to her “cupcake punk” and come see her next Thursday night!

Saturday, November 7th: By popular demand, we’re going to be hosting a vegan potluck at Sweat followed by a live performance by JESSE JACKSON!  Potlucks are an awesome way to meet new people, trade recipes, and eat lots of delicious food.  Bring a dish to share (8 or more servings) made without dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin and hydrogenated chemical stuffs, or simply pay $7 at the door to eat your heart out. If you need ideas of what to make, there are literally thousands of great recipes on the internet so look around for some inspiration! After the potluck, Miami’s own talented troubadour Jesse Jackson takes the Sweat stage for what will surely be a fantastic show.

    Hope to see you around!
