Doug Stanhope, this Friday at the Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale. Stanhope is known for working outside the comedy club circuit in favor of performing at any “boozer joint” with a stage and microphone. Perfect fit for a man with comedy that won’t conform. Be prepared for some culture-shaking prophetic rants, laced with the finest hooker/poop/drug jokes on the market. Comic-comparisons can be trite, but I’d say if Bill Hicks and George Carlin starred in 2 Girls 1 Cup, Doug Stanhope is the cup. Drink deeply. Now go to Ticketmaster.
And speaking of unholy crap, I get to open for him! This is not only an honor, but also a chance to make some real connections, maybe a new dealer. Not really, mine is great. I saw Stanhope two years ago at Crowbar in Tampa, check out the fan pic!

This Sunday evening THE AVETT BROTHERS are performing live on a tour stop at Ft. Lauderdale’s lovely Parker Playhouse! Why should you go? Well…
Since 2000 they’ve been mixing up alt-country, bluegrass, punk, indie rock, and even ragtime, with new genres like “indie roots”, “folk-punk”, or “grungegrass” being invented to describe them. The SF Chronicle said they’ve got the “heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones.” No small words there.
Or just imagine if the Kings of Leon were chilling in the Carolinas getting back to their roots instead of hitting on underage girls in Manhattan dance clubs. Or if The Decemberists were from Appalachia…
Or just listen for yourself on their myspace page (which has over 5 million plays!) and watch some of their videos.
It should be a great show as their usual lineup of guitar, banjo and stand-up bass is joined on tour by a cello! (I’ve got a thing for strings.) You can score tickets by clicking right here.
See you there!
