Lovers of art and cocktails! This Thursday evening I’m happy to be the musical entertainment at the inaugural event for the as-yet-unnamed new young patrons group at Locust Projects. Locust is a non-profit gallery space that has held incredible exhibits for the last decade, most recently the standing-room-only TM Sisters/Otto/Karelle collaboration “Whirl! Crash! Go!”
There’s a $10 cover that includes libations (do the math, you win) or you can join their group for$75 and enjoy a year’s worth of art and social events, likely involving more cocktails. It’s this Thursday from 7-9pm and you’ll get to spread out on “An Uneven Floor” – Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova’s current exhibition of wall-to-wall fluffy pink carpeting.
By now you’ve all heard about the fact that we’ve got West Palm Beach’s SURFER BLOOD at Fridays at The Vagabond tomorrow, that they’ve been featured in the New York Times, by Rolling Stone, a recent lead story for the Broward New Times, and that scrooge-y old Pitchfork made their single “Swim” number 37 on their list of the top tracks of the year.
What you haven’t heard, is that Sweat and The Vagabond have teamed up with IronForge Press to make a sick silk-screened limited edition poster for the show!
Now firmly settled into our permanent space, we are proud to present the first of what we plan to be many official in-store art exhibits by some of the myriad local talents we are blessed with here in South Florida.
For Art Basel week 2009 Sweat Records is proud to team up with the incredible people at Ft. Lauderdale’s Iron Forge Press! Their show “First Five Years” will be on display at the store though January 31, 2010 and features over 40 of the insanely awesome hand-pulled silk-screen concert posters they’ve done for shows in South Florida. The amount of detail in each one is amazing in real life, but take a digital peek:
IronForge made our Iggy shirts and we can’t recommend them highly enough for any poster, printing, graphic or t-shirt job (note to Miami bands: make more t-shirts!). Read more about IronForge and co-founders Chuck and Ian who seriously f*%king rock on their website and blog.
We’re having the opening reception in the shop tomorrow night from 7-10pm and we’ll be serving free cocktails and playing great music. Stop by then head over to The Vagabond for more of IronForge’s work and a special live set by NYC’s Telepathe!
Our good friends Colin Foord and Jared McKay of Morphologic Studios were recently profiled on WLRN’s ArtStreet!
Watch the video below, read this great interview with them on Artlurker, and bookmark Morphologic’s fascinating blog where they post gorgeous underwater photos, new species they’ve come across (!) and other fun science/art/music-related tidbits. You can also peep their Vimeo channel and follow them on Twitter.
Having one of their tanks at Sweat Records for the past two years has been a wonderful education for us in corals and marine life, and has made us wholeheartedly agree that Miami could use an excellent public aquarium space so that everyone has access to these graceful, misunderstood and endangered species.
We have no doubt that Morphologic are going to be a huge force in art and conservation down here for years to come.
This Saturday evening Sweat is super proud to present the book release event for Miami artist BEATRIZ MONTEAVARO’s new monograph “Quiet Village”!
According to the Miami Contemporary Artists book in which she is featured, her work is inspired by “British new wave music, science fiction, horror movies and Disney World.” Sounds good to us! You can see more for yourself here and here.
The new book, released on Gean Moreno’s non-profit [NAME] Publications, is full of her awesome drawings and comes with a soundtrack CD. The music on it is by Betty’s band BEINGS, who will be performing live at this event! Also performing will be another artist-led musical project – Clifton Childree’s Boise Bob and His Backyard Band! Seriously, click the link and listen…
Saturday’s event starts at 7.30pm and runs until around 9.30pm. Hope to see you there!
(Thanks to Beatriz for drawing the awesome flier!)
Some of you may know Rocky Grimes as the man behind our awesome Sweat tees, but he’s also a multi-media artist, DJ, indie businessman and all-around silk-screener extraordinaire.
Click the pic below to read the interview with him in Juxtapoz Magazine and come by the shop to score one of his Sweat tees or one of his original designs from the rack!
FriendsWithYou toys are some of the shop’s all-time best sellers and now Sweat’s got their brand new magical trinkets… LUCKIES zipper pulls, only $4 each! (We’ve also got a fresh batch of blank Munnys and the giant new 15″ plush Smorkin’ Labbits with mustaches!)
Tonight at the Kidrobot store on South Beach FWY are having a massive release party for the Luckies with limited edition prints for sale and other surprises sure to bring sparkles to your eyes and smiles to your faces. It’s from 6-8pm so arrive early to get the goods…
