Firemen Are Rarely Necessary

Miami Theater Center, The Sandbox

Fireman Are Rarely Necessary is set in a not-so-distant Florida future where it has become increasingly difficult to find the right words to describe a place where things have gone very wrong. It is the story of environmental journalist, Mara Lowe, receiving the tip of her life. Toxic waste is eroding Florida’s limestone bedrock. Determined to get to the truth, Lowe sets out to unravel a conspiracy involving big business, censorship, and the governor himself. This production is made possible by a Knight Foundation Arts Challenge Grant awarded to Mad Cat as part of their Banned/New Series.

Donald Fagen and The Nightflyers

Fillmore Miami Beach

The legendary co-founder of the super group Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, comes to the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater on Tuesday, August 8th, 2017 / 8PM for a special intimate performance. Tickets go on sale starting on Friday, April 28th / 10am.

Donald Fagen is one of the two masterminds behind the legendary jazz-pop band Steely Dan. Along with his longtime friend Walter Becker, they created a string of hits including “Aja,” “FM,” “Reelin In The Years,” “Deacon Blues” and many more.  His solo work has been a continuation of the band’s personna — carefully constructed and arranged, intricately detailed pop songs that are more substantial than their stylish surface may indicate. His solo debut, The Nightfly, was considered one of the best albums he had ever made; it covered the same ground as the previous Steely Dan albums, yet surpassed them in terms of ambition and achievement.  It was certified platinum for sales of over a million copies in the U.S. and reached 11 on the Billboard Top 200 albums list.  It was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Becker produced Fagen’s second album, Kamakiriad, which was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and reached number 10 on the Top 200 albums chart.  Fagen has produced two additional well-received solo albums as well as publishing an autobiography titled Eminent Hipsters.  He and Becker still continue to tour frequently as Steely Dan.

Social Distortion

Fillmore Miami Beach

Social Distortion has stayed strong for three decades on their own terms, on their own time, by their own rules, and over that time their influence has only grown. Each of their albums has been stronger than their last. They’ve been brought onstage by Bruce Springsteen, because he wanted to play one of their songs. They’ve seen high times and low ones, good days and tragic days, but every night they give 100%, and every morning they wake up still swinging.

Tove Lo

Revolution Live

Crafting an idiosyncratic blend of pop influenced as much by ’80s pop as by contemporary EDM and coupled with raw, brutally honest lyrics, Tove Lo made a name for herself as an award-winning performer and Grammy-nominated songwriter. Born in a suburb of Stockholm, she began writing poetry and short stories at a young age. She went on to study at the famous Rytmus Musikergymnasiet where she befriended the future members of Icona Pop. She decided to focus on her own songs, spending six months in her shed studio working on a demo. At a party celebrating Icona Pop’s first record deal, she used the opportunity to foist her demo on a staff member at their label, leading to a publishing deal with Warner Chappell and a trip to L.A. to work with fellow Swede and pop songwriting/production supremo Max Martin.

Epica, Lacuna Coil & Insomnium

Revolution Live

The world of symphonic metal is all about big ideas and high standards, but few bands have taken this most bombastic of genres to such momentous creative heights as EPICA. Formed in the Netherlands, these perennially dynamic masters of sonic opulence swiftly grabbed the world’s attention with their debut album, The Phantom Agony. With a fresh and vital sound that struck a sublime balance between orchestral grandeur and pure heavy metal grit, EPICA’s music has continued to showcase the compelling contrast between singer, Simone Simons’s soaring vocals and guitarist, Mark Jansen’s guttural growls; between Isaac Delahaye’s unstoppable core of scything riffs and keyboard maestro, Coen Janssen’s intricate, hugely cinematic arrangements and embellishments. All of this backed by a powerful tandem: Ariën van Weesenbeek blasting his drums and Rob van der Loo providing tasteful low end.  The lyrics, too, made EPICA stand out from the crowd, as they eschewed the traditional symphonic trope of fantasy and began to explore and dissect notions of philosophy, science and spirituality. This Dutch sextet are widely regarded as the genre’s brightest hope and international success is in their grasp.

Trombone Shorty (Two Nights)

“gleaming, graceful, slightly gritty and distinctly modern.”—The Wall Street Journal

“an entertainer, whose music blends jazz, funk, R&B and whatever else will get the crowd jumping and shouting…

play it loud enough and questions of genre will fly away on the breeze from Andrews’ horn.”—Stereogum

“Parking Lot Symphony continues Trombone Shorty’s personal tradition of stunningly good musicianship, crowd-pleasing good material and just plain good fun… Andrews keeps the music close to his heart and his hometown.”—OffBeat

Magpie Salute

Revolution Live

he Magpie Salute is an exciting new band that features musicians who have played together for decades throughout various projects and share a musical bond. The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame – guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien – alongside drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. The Magpie Salute marks the reunion of the Robinson and Ford guitar team which ended back in 1997 when Ford left The Black Crowes.  The band also boasts a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. The term “Magpie Salute” references a British superstition about the imperative to salute a Magpie anytime you see one in order to ward off negativity, or to have a good day. Clearly, The Magpie Salute intends to mix it up, breathing new life into musical bonds, rooted in tradition and the universal language of Rock and Roll.

Band of Horses

Fillmore Miami Beach

Band of Horses is an American rock band formed in 2004 in Seattle by Ben Bridwell. The band has released five studio albums, the most successful of which is 2010’s Grammy-nominated Infinite Arms. The band’s lineup, which included Mat Brooke for the debut album, has undergone several changes; the most-recent lineup of Bridwell, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, Bill Reynolds, and Creighton Barrett, had been together for several years until Ramsey and Reynolds’ departure in 2017, recording three albums. Band of Horses’ fifth studio album, Why Are You OK, was released in June 2016.

Grizzly Bear

Fillmore Miami Beach

When Grizzly Bear came to the end of the road with their fourth album, 2012’s Shields, the future was unclear. No dramatic decisions were made, no arguments were had, but there was a feeling as there always is with the foursome that a breather was required. The band who emerged in 2004 in Brooklyn, New York, have forever functioned as a self-described “democracy”. It’s equal and it’s fair but it can also take a lot of out of them. And so they went their separate ways and bedded down in different corners.  But they couldn’t stay away.  The resulting fifth Grizzly Bear album Painted Ruins benefits from having the songs develop in a completely organic way.  That relief, that momentum, that sense of a band really relishing the chance to relocate their mojo is apparent on the album, which wound up taking two years to make.
