SOUTH FLORIDA EVENTS CALENDAR

  1. Amstel Light Burger Beast Challenge

Want to WIN tickets to Amstel Light® Burger Bash®? One of South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s most regarded events is without a doubt, Amstel Light® Burger Bash®. More than 25 of the country’s top burger maestros have been carefully curated to bring their talents to South Beach so that you can decide who will take home this year’s coveted Amstel Light People’s Choice Award. This year, the friendly burger competition will go beyond Miami Beach’s white sandy beaches with over 20 South Florida restaurants who will participate in the #AmstelBurgerBeast Challenge for the chance to win a spot to cook alongside the winner of the 9th Annual Amstel Light Burger Bash® underneath the signature white tents behind The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach hotel.

The Official Beer of the Burger™, Amstel Light®, has partnered with South Florida celebrity blogger, The Burger Beast, for a fun competition that highlights over 20 burger destinations from Boca Raton to Coral Gables. The Burger Beast, who has appeared on the Food Network and founded South Florida’s Annual Burgie Awards, will visit each location and decide which burger pairs best with Amstel Light®.

Burger enthusiasts can also get in on the fun! Participating restaurant guests can win a pair to South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s Amstel Light® Burger Bash® on Friday, February 20th (valued at $500) by just pairing their Amstel Light® with a delicious burger and upload a pic to Instagram with #AmstelBurgerBeast. The lucky winner will be announced on The Burger Beast’s Instagram (@burgerbeast) at Noon on Wednesday, February 18th, 2015.

  12. The Center for Writing & Literature @ Miami Dade College and the National Endowment for the Arts Celebrate Reading with The Big Read

    Dates: February 5 – March 5, 2015

The time has come again to celebrate one of Miami’s most beloved literary events: The Big Read. Powered by the National Endowment for the Arts, this community shared reading program will feature events inspired by the novel When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka. The Center for Writing and Literature @ Miami Dade College (The Center @ MDC) is kicking off The Big Read.

In When the Emperor Was Divine, Otsuka addresses themes of race, identity, loyalty and patriotism. In her sparse, beautiful prose she quietly reveals the ugly underbelly of being “other” in a country which both embraces and rejects its immigrant self.

All participants will receive a copy of When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka.

The Nightmares on Wax story is one that spans decades and genres. The moniker of George Evelyn, he stands as Warp Records’ longest serving artist with both celebrating their 25th anniversary in existence this year. To mark this occasion NOW is releasing N.O.W. Is The Time, a 2-disc best of release comprising the greatest hits as well as a special edition box set Deep Down: Remixes & Rarities which also features unreleased material, new and classic remixes, and a book of memorabilia and interviews.

Nightmares on Wax came up in the 80s UK B-Boy and graffiti scene enamored with New York Hip Hop and was an innovator in merging those sounds and feelings with the popular sounds of the UK at that time to pioneer what became dubbed ‘trip-hop’. Releasing classic albums such as Smoker’s Delight and Carboot Soul and working with the likes of De La Soul and Roots Manuva established NOW as one of the definitive purveyors of hip hop, funk, dub and soul.

25 years on his fanbase is still growing. His recent Boiler Room DJ set has over half a million views and after his successful US tour following the release of his most recent record Feelin’ Good, he embarked on his largest US tour to date.

Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnE-yArDs since 2009. First gaining notice with the debut BiRd-BrAiNs, which The New York Times called “a confident do-it-yourselfer’s opening salvo: a staticky, low-fi, abrasive attention-getter,” Garbus forged a reputation as a formidable live presence through relentless touring. In 2011, tUnE-yArDs released its second album, w h o k i l l, a startling and sonically adventurous statement that led to a whirlwind period where Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner accrued accolades from critics (including the #1 spot on the Village Voice’s 2011 Pazz and Jop poll), performed around the world, and collaborated with the likes of Yoko Ono and ?uestlove. The stunning third album, Nikki Nack, was released in 2014 via 4AD and features work with producers John Hill (Rihanna, Shakira, M.I.A.) and Malay (Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, Big Boi). It’s a showcase of how Garbus’s songwriting has blossomed, and a testament to how current technologies can combine with themes from the past—Saturday mornings spent watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, puppet shows based on Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, hard days made less so by the refuge provided by top-40 radio—to create something utterly original.
