This performance of John Hollenbeck and the Claudia Quintet, presented by SFCA and its Subtropics Biennial in collaboration with EMIT Series and its St. Pete. Jazz Festival and the Timucua Arts Foundation, is supported by Presenter Consortium for Jazz,  a program of Chamber Music America funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

From NYC, the Claudia Quintet has walked a unique path in contemporary jazz since their founding in the late 1990s. Unlike most jazz ensembles where the particular musicians may come and go, drummer, composer and leader John Hollenbeck always wanted Claudia to be a ‘band’ with a sound not only determined by the compositions and the instrumentation, but with the actual players who perform the music. This concept is why Claudia has had an immediately identifiable sound since its inception. In that sound, the exceptional artistry and individuality of each musician is skillfully revealed throughout Hollenbeck’s original compositions.

Formed by Hollenbeck in 1997, this NYC ensemble’s sound continues to explore the edge without alienating the mainstream, proving that genre-defying music can be for everyone. The Claudia Quintet has amazed audiences from Alabama to the Amazon. Their singular sound has inspired dancing hippie girls at a New Mexico noise festival, the avant-garde cognoscenti in the concert halls of Vienna and Sao Paolo, and a generation of young musicians worldwide. In the course of the thousands of miles they have traveled together and hundreds of concerts they’ve played, the Claudia Quintet has evolved and grown, developing a dynamic live sound based on trust and spontaneity. They bring this powerful energy into the studio, where they record the old-fashioned way, live, playing as a band.

Over the past decade, the group has released six CDs that are critically acclaimed worldwide and whose appeal extends well beyond, as well as including traditional jazz audiences. The group’s first album, “The Claudia Quintet,” was released on the Blueshift CRI record label. The group has since established a long time relationship with the Cuneiform label, releasing five albums with them.

The personnel for this concert tour includes John Hollenbeck – drums, Drew Gress – bass (John Abercrombie, Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane); Matt Moran – vibraphone (Slavic Soul Party, Mat Maneri, Nate Wooley); Red Wierenga – accordion (Respect Quartet, Signal, Brad Lubman); and Chris Speed – clarinet and tenor saxophone (Uri Caine, Endangered Blood, Alas No Axis) and Fabian Almazan – special guest pianist. This concert is sponsored by Chamber Music America & the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

LISTENING CLUB: THE MUSIC OF ROBERT ASHLEY
    curator: THOMAS BUCKNER
    TUE MAR 3 | 7:30PM
    audiotheque listening session
924 lincoln road  studio 201, miami beach

As the New Yorker magazine recently stated, “With the passing of Robert Ashley (1930-2014), America lost a musical voice that was not only daringly experimental but also deeply human.” Baritone Thomas Buckner, a longtime collaborator on Ashley’s invention of new operatic forms, will present a talk with recorded examples illustrating Ashley’s central insight that the words are the music.

SFCA [isaw+subtropics.org] would like to acknowledge that, since 1996, Robert Ashley played a special role in the history of the Subtropics Biennial as a member of our artistic advisory board.

    SUBTROPICS XXIII
    FAST FORWARD: SOUND KITCHEN
    WED MAR 4 | 7:30PM
    audiotheque concert
924 lincoln road  studio 201, miami beach

Fast Forward is a New York based english composer and performer who makes music with almost anything. Using an array of kitchen hardware and assorted objects Fast Forward performs his latest composition for alternative instrumentation. In his solo concerts, he adopts a sculptural approach to creating sound. He examines the sensual, tactile qualities of the objects, then ties the sound of the objects to the physical gesture that creates the sound. The result is a stage presence that integrates the visual element of the performance with the music.

THOMAS BUCKNER: THE MYSTERY OF THE RIVER … A TRIBUTE TO ROBERT ASHLEY
    THU MAR 5 | 7:30PM
fiu carta miami beach urban studios concert
    420 lincoln road, miami beach

Robert Ashley was one of the most original minds in contemporary music. Based on his insights into the relation between music and words, he invented a new form of opera, a kind of singing in a manner of speaking, which has fascinated audiences and critics world wide. Over the more than thirty years that they worked together, Ashley wrote a number of concert versions of arias from his operas, as well as stand alone works, for baritone Thomas Buckner. Each piece in this concert showcases a different aspect of Ashley’s creativity, and yet the concert cannot begin to cover the astonishing range of his work.

The first half of the concert is the briefest possible performance of the opera he often called his favorite, “Atalanta, Acts of God.” Ashley composed and wrote10 hours of material for the opera, from which each performance could be constructed. For this concert, Buckner will perform an aria from each of the opera’s three acts. The style of this opera is what the composer calls ‘spontaneous musical invention based on the declamation of the text’.

The second half contains two stand alone pieces composed especially for Buckner, one without words, in which the singer is one voice in an electronic orchestra, and one in which the accompaniment uses mouth percussion and amplification in an entirely new way. In each of Robert Ashley’s vocal works, there is a unique combination of precision and freedom for the performer, making for an exciting musical experience.

In addition to her work as a musician, Smith is co-editor of The Improviser, an international journal of free improvisation, and works as a visual artist, exhibiting her drawings and ceramics in the U.S. She returns to Miami as a Subtropics festival guest to perform a solo program … “as seen by the eye of an owl”.

    HUNDRED WATERS
Spring Tour 2015 – North America

    http://facebook.com/hundredwaters

    Tickets: http://ticketfly.com/event/725433

The quartet’s members Nicole Miglis, Trayer Tryon, Paul Giese & Zach Tetreault played together in various formations as far back as middle school, but it took until adulthood and 2012 for them to become Hundred Waters. Living under one roof meant the band had a communal mentality, yet each maintained their own distinct projects, borrowing here and there from each other. It was in interpreting a friends’ music together that they discovered the power of their combination, and they quickly fell to work reorienting their lives around an album. The music they found was a beautiful blend of contradictions, mournful yet colorful, introverted yet aware, and brought the tradition of songwriting to a strange future. Initially released by their local label Elestial Sound, their self-titled debut soon became seen as the sound of Florida, drawing loose comparisons to Stereolab, Four Tet, and Bjork. Soon it attracted the most unlikely of label bosses, Skrillex, who signed the band to his OWSLA label that same year and gave the album a full-scale release, with remixes by Araab Muzik, Star Slinger, and TokiMonsta. Since then the band has taken its live show around the world, touring with artists such as Grimes, Julia Holter, Alt-J & the XX.

  29. Calle Ocho Festival

    For Immediate Release – 01/15/2015

“Discover The Louder Side at Calle Ocho Festival, March 15th.”

The Louder Side at Calle Ocho: For a second time in Calle Ocho’s festival history, The Louder Side, will bring the best in EDM, Rock and Pop to Miami on SUNDAY, MARCH 15th.

The Louder Side is the first stage of its kind. Master Key Entertainment and Calle Ocho Festival have come together a second  year to produce and host The Louder Side stage at Carnaval Miami, otherwise known as Calle Ocho. On March 15th, starting from 10:00 AM all the way to 7:00 PM, Calle Ocho will experience the best local acts South Florida has to offer.

In 2014 the line up included Sunghosts, with their sun-drenched indie rock’n roll goodness, who were recently featured on Alternative Press, and Scary Iowa, the Florida folk rock band that decided to name themselves based on a terrible online dating experience. Other acts included The Inverted (Stuart), Chron (Miami), The Casa Brothers (Miami), and Wyld Fly (Ft. Lauderdale), to name just a few.

This year, the full lineup is scheduled to be announced on February 15th.

The Louder Side is a celebration of life, family, friends, fun, but first and foremost, we come together a second year to enforce and continue promoting antibullying through music and good times!

Last year we had the honor to have Aaron Paul, from Breaking Bad hanging out with us and

    enjoying the concert.

On Sunday March 15th, Little Havana in Miami will be ready to hold once again the largest Hispanic festival in the United States. From 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM attendees will enjoy great food, but more importantly… Are you ready to discover The Louder Side?

This is a free and all community event.

Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnE-yArDs since 2009. First gaining notice with the debut BiRd-BrAiNs, which The New York Times called “a confident do-it-yourselfer’s opening salvo: a staticky, low-fi, abrasive attention-getter,” Garbus forged a reputation as a formidable live presence through relentless touring. In 2011, tUnE-yArDs released its second album, w h o k i l l, a startling and sonically adventurous statement that led to a whirlwind period where Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner accrued accolades from critics (including the #1 spot on the Village Voice’s 2011 Pazz and Jop poll), performed around the world, and collaborated with the likes of Yoko Ono and ?uestlove. The stunning third album, Nikki Nack, was released in 2014 via 4AD and features work with producers John Hill (Rihanna, Shakira, M.I.A.) and Malay (Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, Big Boi). It’s a showcase of how Garbus’s songwriting has blossomed, and a testament to how current technologies can combine with themes from the past—Saturday mornings spent watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, puppet shows based on Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, hard days made less so by the refuge provided by top-40 radio—to create something utterly original.

    Budos Band
The NYC based 10 piece describes themselves as “Staten Island instrumental afro-soul”. Their sound continues to evolve, to psychedelic sounds of early heavy metal fused with the tight-knit propulsion of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Pitchfork says Budos Band is “So tight and in tune that they’ve basically become this telepathically-communicating instrumental hydra that ambushes you into moving your body on its terms.”

Puerto Candelaria is a sonorous imaginary and real place, born in the musical imagination of six talented musicians from Medellin, Colombia. The group came together in 2000, to create a new sound based on popular Colombian rhythms like the beloved cumbia, fueled by a dance beat and a mighty horn section. The band now finds itself, a decade later, one of the most daring and innovative musical projects in Colombia today.

My Deer was formed by former Sirens & Sealions songwriter Johanna Viscaino and guitar player Yannick Calleiro, who had collaborated on several indie folk projects. The two Miami-based artists formed My Deer in 2013 to incorporate their shared passion for indie pop, disco and ambient music.

    Wild Belle
American indie band Wild Belle is siblings Elliot and Natalie Bergman, who grew up in a musical household filled with jazz, soul, old school reggae and African bands. The NYTimes says “the siblings’ travels, both literal and sonic, helped expand their musical purview. The resulting mix of sounds – indie pop tinged with reggae and ’70s soul – can be heard throughout Wild Belle’s debut album, “Isles.”

    Ana Tijoux
Born in France to Chilean parents in political exile during Pinochet’s dictatorship, Ana Tijoux moved back to Chile as a teenager and found a home in Santiago’s emerging hip-hop scene. Her sound is lush, golden-era hip-hop production rooted in traditional Latin instrumentation. Rolling Stone named her performance at SXSW on of the best concerts of this year’s festival, while the New York Times has called her “South America’s answer to Lauryn Hill: equally skillful at singing and rapping.”

Bluejay is the new underground sound of Miami – a mix of indie, tribal, folk, and pop. The live shows are an enchanting romp – a well-balanced mix of pop hooks and compelling tribal cries from the depths of the spirit, all tied together by three-part vocal harmonies and the low singing lull of the cello.

In May 2010, Peter Hook, legendary bassist of both Joy Division and later New Order, decided to honour the outstanding work of his first band and the undoubted genius of the late Ian Curtis by giving people the opportunity to hear both of Joy Division’s masterpiece albums, ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’, live and in their entireties. Backed by his new band The Light, Hooky first played ‘Unknown Pleasures’ at the Factory club in Manchester on May 18th & 19th 2010 in order to celebrate the life of Ian – one stand alone sold out night quickly became two, and due to phenomenal worldwide demand, Hooky then began taking the show on the road with headline gigs & major festival appearances throughout Europe, a full tour of Australia & New Zealand as well as the band’s first tour of the United States in December which culminated in Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell appearing live with the lads in Los Angeles to sing ‘Transmission’.
