Epica, Lacuna Coil & Insomnium

Revolution Live

The world of symphonic metal is all about big ideas and high standards, but few bands have taken this most bombastic of genres to such momentous creative heights as EPICA. Formed in the Netherlands, these perennially dynamic masters of sonic opulence swiftly grabbed the world’s attention with their debut album, The Phantom Agony. With a fresh and vital sound that struck a sublime balance between orchestral grandeur and pure heavy metal grit, EPICA’s music has continued to showcase the compelling contrast between singer, Simone Simons’s soaring vocals and guitarist, Mark Jansen’s guttural growls; between Isaac Delahaye’s unstoppable core of scything riffs and keyboard maestro, Coen Janssen’s intricate, hugely cinematic arrangements and embellishments. All of this backed by a powerful tandem: Ariën van Weesenbeek blasting his drums and Rob van der Loo providing tasteful low end.  The lyrics, too, made EPICA stand out from the crowd, as they eschewed the traditional symphonic trope of fantasy and began to explore and dissect notions of philosophy, science and spirituality. This Dutch sextet are widely regarded as the genre’s brightest hope and international success is in their grasp.

Trombone Shorty (Two Nights)

Revolution Live

“gleaming, graceful, slightly gritty and distinctly modern.”—The Wall Street Journal

“an entertainer, whose music blends jazz, funk, R&B and whatever else will get the crowd jumping and shouting…

play it loud enough and questions of genre will fly away on the breeze from Andrews’ horn.”—Stereogum

“Parking Lot Symphony continues Trombone Shorty’s personal tradition of stunningly good musicianship, crowd-pleasing good material and just plain good fun… Andrews keeps the music close to his heart and his hometown.”—OffBeat

Papadosio with Phutureprimative

Culture Room

Falling somewhere between rock, jazz and electronic mayhem we find space rock. This is a genre that is not readily defined and is a state of mind as much as it could be considered a genre. This range of frequencies is where Papadosio tends to spend their time, sometimes dining in deep space, and other times snacking right on your front porch. Papadosio strives to create music that is strangely familiar and calls all walks of humanity to bask in a unique experience celebrating the one constant in an ever-changing world: music. Join Papadosio in an effort to create, augment, and rejoice in the universal language of music. Most importantly, have a good time.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with Dumpstaphunk

Revolution Live

New Orlean’s powerhouse, Trombone Shorty, joins us in Fort Lauderdale at Revolution Live for two nights of funk on September 29th &30th. Joined by his band Orleans Avenue. Opening for them will be Dumpstaphunk.

Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews has God-given talent, natural charisma and a relentless drive to bridge music’s past and future. His third outing for Verve Records, Say That To Say This (Sept. 10), co-produced by Andrews and kindred spirit Raphael Saadiq, sounds like nothing else out there, as Andrews and his longtime band, Orleans Avenue – guitarist Pete Murano, bassist Mike Ballard and drummer Joey Peebles – continue their natural musical evolution. In a very real sense, the torch is passed from one great New Orleans band to another on the new album, which features the first new studio recording from the original members of the legendary Meters in 36 years, as they revisit their 1977 classic “Be My Lady,” with Andrews singing lead and playing horns.

Magpie Salute

Revolution Live

he Magpie Salute is an exciting new band that features musicians who have played together for decades throughout various projects and share a musical bond. The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame – guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien – alongside drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. The Magpie Salute marks the reunion of the Robinson and Ford guitar team which ended back in 1997 when Ford left The Black Crowes.  The band also boasts a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. The term “Magpie Salute” references a British superstition about the imperative to salute a Magpie anytime you see one in order to ward off negativity, or to have a good day. Clearly, The Magpie Salute intends to mix it up, breathing new life into musical bonds, rooted in tradition and the universal language of Rock and Roll.

Band of Horses

Fillmore Miami Beach

Band of Horses is an American rock band formed in 2004 in Seattle by Ben Bridwell. The band has released five studio albums, the most successful of which is 2010’s Grammy-nominated Infinite Arms. The band’s lineup, which included Mat Brooke for the debut album, has undergone several changes; the most-recent lineup of Bridwell, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, Bill Reynolds, and Creighton Barrett, had been together for several years until Ramsey and Reynolds’ departure in 2017, recording three albums. Band of Horses’ fifth studio album, Why Are You OK, was released in June 2016.

Grizzly Bear

Fillmore Miami Beach

When Grizzly Bear came to the end of the road with their fourth album, 2012’s Shields, the future was unclear. No dramatic decisions were made, no arguments were had, but there was a feeling as there always is with the foursome that a breather was required. The band who emerged in 2004 in Brooklyn, New York, have forever functioned as a self-described “democracy”. It’s equal and it’s fair but it can also take a lot of out of them. And so they went their separate ways and bedded down in different corners.  But they couldn’t stay away.  The resulting fifth Grizzly Bear album Painted Ruins benefits from having the songs develop in a completely organic way.  That relief, that momentum, that sense of a band really relishing the chance to relocate their mojo is apparent on the album, which wound up taking two years to make.

POPTONE feat. Founding Members Daniel Ash & Kevin Haskins

Revolution Live

Singer-guitarist Daniel Ash and drummer Kevin Haskins — who spent large swaths of the ’80s and ’90s performing together in the seminal acts Bauhaus, Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets — have reunited to form a new band called Poptone, with Haskins’ daughter Diva, that will perform the music of those three classic acts on tour in the U.S.  Diva Dompe is a musician in her own right who previously played inBlackBlackHaskins and Ash, who have been DJing together of late, last played together, with Haskins’ brother David J and frontman Peter Murphy, during a Bauhaus reunion and in Love and Rockets, again with David J, in a later reunion. – Tickets on sale here: https://goo.gl/JnqFys

GWAR at Revolution Live

Revolution Live

GWAR are thrash metal’s answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWARwere formed as an experiment in marketing strategy by several musicians, art students, and dancers. The group claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in Antarctica and initially created from the lowest filth in the universe, who came to Earth to sexually enslave and/or slaughter the human race. Taking the rock theatrics of Kiss and Alice Cooper to depraved new levels, GWAR has been putting on one of rock’s most outrageous and offensive–not to mention creative—live shows. The group quickly established a unique identity as the members performed in bizarre costumes made of latex and papier-mâché, while the stage show itself featured fake pagan rituals and corpses spewing washable bodily fluids on the audience. GWAR are perhaps best appreciated for their visual aspects, which have historically been far more creative than the actual music; indeed, the group received a somewhat stunning Grammy nomination in 1993 for its long-form home video Phallus in Wonderland. GWAR heads to Revolution Live on December 5. Tickets are on sale for $22.50 in advance, and $25 on the day of the show. Tickets on sale here: https://goo.gl/oEKquv

Reverend Horton Heat w/ The Blasters, Junior Brown, and more

Revolution Live

The Reverend Horton Heat is perhaps the most popular psychobilly artist of all time. The Reverend (as both the three-man band and its guitar-playing frontman were known) built a strong cult following through constant touring, manic showmanship, and a twisted sense of humor. The latter was nothing new in the world of psychobilly, of course, and Heat’s music certainly kept the trashy aesthetic of his spiritual forebears. The Reverend’s true innovation was updating the psychobilly sound for the alternative rock era. In his hands, it was something more than retro-obsessed kitsch — it had roaring distorted guitars, it rocked as hard as any punk band, and it didn’t look exclusively to pop culture of the past for its style or subject matter. Most of The Reverend’s lyrics were gonzo celebrations of sex, drugs, booze, and cars, and true to his name, his concerts often featured mock sermons in the style of a rural revivalist preacher. The Reverend makes his way to Revolution Live on December 21, with support from The Blasters, Junior Brown, and more.
