WHOMADEWHO with Pompeya and Krisp Live @ Grand Central 9/3/15

Mishu & Gumdrops Present:

Whomadewho with Pompeya and Krisp

THURSDAY | SEPTEMBER 3rd 2015 | 8PM | 18+

Mishu & Gummdrops present

Back in 2007 the NME posed the following question: “What would happen if WhoMadeWho got serious?” It was around this time that the Danish trio of Tomas Høffding, Jeppe Kjellberg and Tomas Barfod – having released just one album – were drafted in as very last minute replacements to open that year’s Benacassim festival after the Klaxons were delayed by a grounded plane. Bounding onto the stage sporting skeleton outfits, they shouted, “Hello, we’re the Klaxons! From Denmark!” Hence the question. Fast-forward six years and it all seems completely moot – their forthcoming fifth album, Dreams, is not only the sound of a band getting very serious indeed, it’s also one of the best indie-dance albums to emerge in years.

The truth is, WhoMadeWho realised they needed to get serious after their 2005 self-titled album propelled them into a seemingly endless bout of touring, with their 2009 follow-up, The Plot, suffering from the burn-out that left behind. “Our first album got great reviews and a lot of stuff just happened from nowhere,” explains singer/bassist Tomas Høffding, “then our second album was kind of not so good and we felt that we’d been carried rather than having to work for it.” For singer/guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg, it was vital that the band take the template of those first two albums – the inventive instrumentals, the vibrant melodies – and craft them more into actual songs, and not just rely on them as a reason to play live. “I think it’s important for a band to develop,” he states matter-of-factly. “We are all very curious characters and we are adventurous and so therefore when we started out it was fun to have this project where we just played around and just did instrumental music that was made for playing in clubs, and it was just a lot of fun. But then when we’d been touring for a number of years, it seemed like it started to become a loop and something we don’t want to do is just do the same thing over and over again. Now we spend more time on the album process – making the songs, working on the songwriting, recording the vocals properly, doing it all over and over again. Usually we’d be more like ‘we have a great instrumental’ and then we’d add some random lyric and do a quick vocal and then we’d have a great song.”

That’s not to say they’ve grown boring (“You can’t say that about us” says Jeppe), with their live show still a riot of undulating and experimental pop music, but since 2011’s mini-album Knee Deep through 2012’s critically lauded Brighter, to the forthcoming Dreams, the band have been working to their own strict dogma, entitled Double Or Die. “Basically, with each album we always want to double everything – Facebook followers, YouTube views, album sales and everything, AXE AND THE OAK
f we didn’t do that in a year we would stop the band. We were that serious about it. That was a good way to get it on track,” explains drummer and producer Tomas Barfod. It also helped with the creative process, leading to the band recording and discarding songs that they felt weren’t good enough. “If we start doing the same thing over and over again, we’ll get bored and then we start getting boring and it will just go down,” says Jeppe. “When you’re not enthusiastic you don’t perform very well, so we try to keep each other energised.” Also, essentially, they just wanted to start making songs that touched people and were fully rounded, rather than continue to be labelled as ‘kooky’ or ‘leftfield’. They wanted to be a band that you could love for the songs and melodies, and not simply for the wackiness and weird costumes. “After four albums, we agreed that it was so easy to be the leftfield, cool, indie band because you can just do stuff and if you do things that are weird they’re automatically seen as good,” explains Tomas Høffding. “Pop music is not like that because it’s so much harder to make it cool. It’s so much easier to hate it.”

Thankfully, it’s impossible to hate anything about Dreams, an album that takes the template of 2012’s Brighter and refines it still further. “It’s more luxurious,” laughs Høffding. “There are more guitars, but it also feels more relaxed. We always try and put our live energy into the recordings and with this one we thought ‘fuck it’ we’ll make songs that are nice to listen to on headphones and in your everyday lives but if you want to party you can some and hear them live.” For Jeppe, it also meant he got to indulge in some more guitar playing. “I think the main difference is that Brighter had a lot of keyboards in the production, but on Dreams I spent a lot more time playing the guitar. We come from a dance background and that’s the core energy of the band and always will be, but this album has a different energy to Brighter and it’s not so clubby in the mix – it’s more warm and loving. It’s still very sexy and funky, but it’s not intimidating or aggressive in sound.” This sense of serenity can be heard on the beautiful lilt of the deliciously catchy title track, the soft thrum of the closing United and the delicately percussive Another Day. Nestled in amongst it all, however, is the album’s highlight in the shape of the house-y, lyrically melancholic Hiding In Darkness, a song that betrays the band’s Scandinavian roots. “WhoMadeWho has always been about defying the Scandinavian love of the melancholy but I guess during the last three albums it’s sneaked in,” explains Jeppe. But the song is also influenced by their dance background, in a slightly more round about way: “Hiding In Darkness was inspired by a one off trip to Berghain, the legendary techno-club in Berlin that opens very late and goes on for the whole weekend. I just remember dancing and there was this dark energy and I was thinking about all these destinies and what they were thinking about. Hiding In Darkness is reflecting specifically on that situation and trying to grasp the thoughts and feelings of that moment.”

The acceptance is just one part of WhoMadeWho coming to terms with who they are as a band and feeling more comfortable in their own skin. Perhaps that’s why Dreams works so well. Or maybe it’s the scalpel-sharp production and songwriting nous? Maybe it’s the way each song – from Traces’ synthetic mesh of keyboards to Right Track’s low-slung funk – seems to slowly bore its way into your head on repeated listens? So, and this is important, if Dreams were a car what sort of car would it be? “An exclusive vehicle of some kind,” laughs Jeppe. “It would be very pretentious to say it’s a Rolls Royce, but I’d like to. It’s luxurious,” says Tomas Høffding. “It’s a limo,” adds Tomas Barfod, before Jeppe counters with the ultimate definition: “It’s not flashy like a big limo. It would just be a small one – like really high quality but when you see it in traffic it’s not screaming for attention.” Seriousness never sounded so good.

Pompeya is a Moscow band that creates unabashed Pop and New Wave music. Their debut “Tropical” and follow up “Foursome” earned the band significant popularity in their home country, “energetically introducing Moscow’s youth to electronic indie culture” remarks Los Angeles radio station KCRW. The two releases were reissued in November 2013 by No Shame, alongside with a remix LP.
The group released their “Night EP” in June 2014. Co-Produced by Brian Mctear (Local Natives, War on Drugs, Twin Sister), Spin Magazine remarks the work “add[s] a mellow freshness to Pompeya’s brand of upbeat, frisky disco.” The success of this creative marriage led to the two collaborating on the band’s newest LP. Together with David Harley (War on Drugs, Nightlands), “Real” builds upon Pompeya’s foundation of pop with more diverse arrangements, instrumentation and spectrum of tone.

Krisp has opened for acts Nancy Wang, Miami Horror, Junior Boys, Blood Orange, and Holy Ghost!, among others. In August of 2012, Krisp released their first official EP, Mamani Vice, which was featured and reviewed in music blogs including Earmilk, Hype Machine, Indie Shuffle, Nightdrive, and Beached Miami, to name a few.

MONOTONE September 12TH 2015 ADN copy

MONOTONE presents: ADN CKRYSTALL Live! Only US show Saturday September 12th 2015

Miami’s original night focusing on minimal synth has just arrived at The Electric Pickle, a venue that we feel embraces the TRUE spirit of the
Electronic Underground.

This is by far our greatest installment of Monotone for we are Proud to Present:

ADN CKRYSTALL Live in concert.  Absolutely NO COVER CHARGE (unheard of for this act!)

ADN’ Ckrystall is the moniker of synthesizer wizard Érick Moncollin from Tarbes, France. In 1977 Moncollin spent time in Paris experimenting with synthesizers, jamming alongside composers Vangelis and Tim Blake.
It was here that he obtained a prototype of the Korg MS-20, a legendary synthesizer. While attending art school in Tolouse, Érick met Benoit Hutin, who offered a studio for the recording of the “Jazz’Mad” album.
The entire album was recorded over a 4 day period in 1980. The sound of “Jazz’Mad” revolves around the synthesizer, utilizing the instrument to all its capacities.
The result is an unconventional and discordant conglomeration of synthesizers, drum machines, and vocals that cradle the edge of the brain.

This is a unique opportunity for intense fans of this genre to catch a true synth hero, live in concert in a GEM of a venue.  ADN plays at the Stroke of Midnight, an all analog live set.

Surrounding this event our “Usual Suspects” will be taking you through flights of your deepest, darkest synth-wave Anthems. We know you’ve missed us….
You won’t believe what we’re bringing out of the vinyl vault for this night!

FRONT 242 **Only Southeastern U.S. Performance** | Grand Central

SUNDAY | SEPTEMBER 20th 2015 | 8 PM | All Ages

Grand Central + Radio-Active Records + Poplife present

**Only Southeastern U.S. Performance**

Front 242 is a Belgian electronic music group that pioneered the style they call electronic body music or EBM. They were a profound influence on the electronic and industrial music genres.

After signing with the Wax Trax! label in 1984, they started their first U.S. tour with Ministry. In 1988, Front by Front was released, which included “Headhunter” (with a video by Anton Corbijn), becoming the band’s first club hit, reaching #13 on the US Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart. They were also involved in side projects. Richard 23 played in the Revolting Cocks, and Jean-Luc De Meyer sang for Bigod 20 for their debut single, “The Bog” in 1990.

Tyranny (For You), released in 1991, became the band’s highest charting album, reaching #95 on the Billboard 200. Sony/Epic signed the band and acquired the rights to their back catalog. A broader public was exposed to their music in 1992 in the film Single White Female. The video playing in a key scene is Front 242’s “Rhythm Of Time”, from Tyranny (For You). Front 242 released two albums in 1993 on Epic’s sub-label RRE and performed on the main stage of the 1993 Lollapalooza tour. The four core members regrouped in 1998, performed on their first tour in five years and started a recording contract in the U.S. with Metropolis Records.

In the 2000s, they made occasional appearances in Latin America and Europe, even being rejoined by Dirk Bergen for a sold out reunion concert under the original lineup of Bresanutti, Bergen, Codenys and De Meyer. The band re-released its entire backcatalogue via Alpha Matrix.

After a seven year break, they released the 2014 EP “Out Of Sight” on Static Cold Media. In 2015, LADLN are back with their strongest release to date, “Vanity Will Perish” which peaked at #3 on the German Alternative Charts. The album infuses dark lyrical themes and hi-energy music including vocal participation by Johan Hansson from Unitary.

Collective Soul

Born during the rise of grunge and alternative rock, Collective Soul broke into mainstream popularity when they rose to international fame in 1993 with the rock anthem “Shine.” The multi-platinum quintet has been making music for two decades since then and has a catalog of #1 hits under their belts. Collective Soul helped shape and define alternative rock with lots of guitars and attitude. The platinum-selling rock band is readying for the Fall 2015 release of their long-awaited ninth album, See What You Started by Continuing, followed by a tour to celebrate the band’s 21st birthday. Collective Soul continues to rock quite simply for the love of music. The band that helped sonically define alternative rock is more focused and energized than ever. And fans can continue to expect “lots of guitars and a fun attitude from the southern gentlemen of rock and roll.”

The living legends of Peruvian cumbia resurrect the sound they made famous in the 1960s—playing the classics of their heyday as well as stylistically- faithful new compositions.

When the wave of counter-culture reached Peru in the 1960’s, musicians incorporated psychedelic surf guitar sounds into their local cumbia, giving birth to a genre known as cumbia Huaracha, or Peruvian cumbia. The phenomenon spread from Lima’s urban center to the most remote towns of the Amazon, and became part of the national identity. Eight former members of the country’s iconic chicha bands (Los Mirlos, Los Diablos Rojos and Los Destellos) have joined up five decades later to revive these delirious melodies with their bold guitar sounds, jolting rhythms, looping grooves, and propulsive beats. South Florida debut

D’Angelo & The Vanguard

Acclaimed R&B guitarist, singer, songwriter D’Angelo brings his band The Vanguard to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Tuesday, October 6th, 2015 / 9PM. Tickets are on sale Friday, August 14th / 10AM.
Once in a while, an album arrives just in time to give the people a voice. Amidst a groundswell of tensions and upheavals, D’Angelo and The Vanguard delivered Black Messiah upon unsuspecting, yet receptive masses. It not only broke a 14-year studio silence from the Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and producer, but it also reaffirmed the need for raw, righteous, and real soul. Its impact could immediately be felt when it landed at #1 on the BillboardR&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and #5 on the Top 200.The fans spoke, and the critics did as well. The New York Times, Spin, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, NPR, The Hollywood Reporter, and countless others extolled the album for both its music and message, thus usurping countless “Best of music lists. However, D’Angelo truly connected once he hit the stage again. He made his Saturday Night Live debut with a silky performance of “Really Love” plus a poignant and powerful rendition of “The Charade” from Black Messiah. Hoodie on, guitar in hand, and surrounded by The Vanguard with statements such as “I Can’t Breathe” and “Black Lives Matter” emblazoned upon their t-shirts, D’Angelo left audiences speechless. He and The Vanguard followed up this seminal moment with a completely sold out European tour—entitled The Second Coming—marking his first full jaunt since 2012’s Occupy Music Tour and The Liberation Tour. Quickly thereafter, D’Angelo returned to the US to perform in front of a sold-out audience at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater. Rolling Stone called the Apollo show, “stunning… for more than two hours, he gave a master class in soul,” while Wall Street Journal wrote, “rendering a strain of soul music reminiscent of Sly Stone in the ‘60s, George Clinton in the ‘70s or 1980s Prince, onstage D’Angelo is a dynamo of the James Brown variety.” The Vanguardfeatures Jesse Johnson (guitar), Isaiah Sharkey (guitar), Pino Palladino (bass), Chris “Daddy” Dave (drums), Cleo “Pookie” Sample (keyboards), and singers Kendra Foster, Charlie “Red” Middleton and Jermain Holmes.
D’Angelo redefines music once more with Black Messiah. though, in some ways, it’s all in the name. Of the title, he explains in the liner notes, “Black Messiah is not one man. It’s a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.” That feeling is going to live on for a long time to come, a vanguard for a new generation

AUTECHRE | Grand Central

SUNDAY | OCTOBER 11th | 8PM | 18+

Poplife & Grand Central present

Live – North America – 2015

Autechre are an English electronic music group consisting of Rob Brown and Sean Booth, both natives of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Formed in 1987, the duo are one of the most prominent acts signed with Warp Records, a label known for its pioneering electronic music and through which all Autechre albums have been released. While most associated with IDM (intelligent dance music), Booth and Brown are ambivalent in relating their sound to established genres. Their music has exhibited a gradual shift in aesthetic throughout their career, from their earlier work with clear roots in techno, electro and hip hop to later albums that are often considered more experimental in nature, featuring complex patterns of rhythm and subdued melodies. Oversteps, their most recent album, was released on February 22nd 2010.

Autechre have also recorded under various pseudonyms. One of the duo\’s earliest recordings was a 12\” under the alias Lego Feet, released in 1991 on Skam Records. The majority of releases by the mysterious \”umbrella project\” Gescom, most of them on Skam, have been attributed to Booth and Brown, among other artists.

Formed in Cincinnati by singer/keyboardist Nicholas PetriccaWalk The Moon built up a devoted following on the strength of their ecstatic live show and their undeniably infectious single “Anna Sun.” A relentless touring machine with an ever-snowballing family of fans, the band quickly graduated from Ohio club scene favorites to an international force to be reckoned with.  In concert, it’s clear that Walk The Moon’s live show is not a spectator sport.  Instead, it’s an interactive celebration of life and love, a communal commitment to joy and living in the moment. Onstage, Petricca leads audiences in a mass exorcism of the things that bring them down, casting out the demons of doubt and insecurity with hands raised to the sky.  Riding the wave of their platinum selling second album Talking Is Hard, the results speak for themselves.  Lead single “Shut Up And Dance” became an undeniable pop-rock anthem.  An ode to freeing yourself from the shackles of self-consciousness and embracing the present, it’s already a live favorite, with a sing-along chorus that works audiences up into a frenzy.  The album is filled with raw vocal performances, heavy rock riffs, new wave quirks, and stylish percussion which make for a futuristic marriage with lyrical themes of self-empowerment, growth, and survival.   “What we’ve ended up with is a bunch of really committed, confident shouts into the darkness,” says Petricca.  As they return to the road, Walk The Moon is finding that the darkness is full of eager fans and soon-to-be-converts, all shouting back, singing along until the lights come up.
General Admission tickets for Walk The Moon Tuesday, October 13th, 2015 / 8PM are $30.00 in advance and $34.00 day of show.  They are on sale Friday, May 15th / Noon at or charge by phone 800-745-3000 and at the Fillmore Box Office during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 11AM – 6PM and during show days).  A limited number of Reserved Seat tickets are also available for $40.50.

The Buenos Aires-based dance company created in 2011 has performed extensively throughout Argentina and internationally in Spain, Brazil and South Africa, where their artistic residency culminated with presentations on the streets of Johannesburg and Soweto. Blasé Boys Club Tour

New album #OceanDrive is out now!

Adam Dyment, aka Duke Dumont, surfaced in 2006 with a buzzing, whip-cracking remix of Mekon’s “Yes Yes Y’All.” The London, England-based producer and DJ, inspired by “fidget house” figure Switch (M.I.A., Major Lazer), continued to increase his exposure through remixes for the likes of Late of the Pier (“Bathroom Gurgle”), Bat for Lashes (“Daniel”), and Lily Allen (“The Fear”) prior to releasing his first DJ mix album, Fabriclive 51, in 2010. Dyment continued to be in demand as a remix producer — in 2012 alone, he handled tracks by Bonobo, Santigold, and AlunaGeorge, among others — but he also produced a hit of his own in March 2013 with “Need U (100%).” Co-produced by Futtize and featuring vocals from A*M*E, the track, reminiscent of early-’90s crossover house, topped the U.K. pop chart. One year on, in March 2014, Dyment hit the U.K. number one spot once again, this time with the Whitney Houston-sampling track “I Got U.”

Eons ago, there existed an elite group of chaos warriors who ravaged the galaxy with a boundless hatred of all things alive. They were called the Scumdogs of the Universe, and they grew in might and fury, the greatest weapon in the arsenal of their cosmic Master. But they became too powerful, and too defiant, and for their cosmic crimes were banished to the most insignificant planet in the universe…the seething mudball known as Earth. Millions of years passed, and they slumbered, until the pollution of your world de-thawed these creatures from their ageless coma…and now they stride the Earth, living gods, dedicated to one goal, the destruction of the human race, and the eradication of existence itself! Wait- that’s two goals! Hark to the hideous majesty of your MASTERS, rulers of Earth, the MIGHTY GWAR!!! It is I, ODERUS URUNGUS, lead singer of the sickest band in metal history, Earth’s only openly extra-terrestrial rock band, and the destined destroyers of not only the human race but also reality itself. GWAR! Hulking, heaving, dribbling WAR-GOD’s who like nothing better than putting hordes of our sniveling fans to the sword while playing the marauding mutant metal that we are famous for! Stars of stage and screen, carvers of stem and spleen! GWAR LIVES!
