  12. Nas: Time Is Illmatic

    -2

Sweat Records + O Cinema’s Music Movie Series continues with the exclusive Miami screening of NAS: TIME IS ILLMATIC!

Tickets are $12 in advance and going FAST so don’t sleep on it!

Returning to his childhood home in Queensbridge, Nas shares stories of his upbringing, his influences – from the music of his jazz musician father Olu Dara to the burgeoning hip-hop scene in New York City – and the obstacles he faced before his major label signing at age 20. Featuring interviews with his ‘Illmatic’ producers (Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and DJ Premier) and musical peers (including Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys), NAS: TIME IS ILLMATIC is a thrilling account of Nas’s evolution from a young street poet to a visionary MC.

“[A] brisk, stylish and extremely heartfelt portrait of Nas’ rise from the housing projects of Queensbridge to the heights of hip-hop royalty.”
    – VARIETY

“Time Is Illmatic is comprehensive, even wisely holistic…”
    – THE PLAYLIST

“The depth of information present in Time Is Illmatic is one of its best aspects, and director One9 and screenwriter Erik Parker manage to blend the majority of it together quite seamlessly.”
    – FILM SCHOOL REJECTS

“The doc avoids the prefab feel of many similarly targeted music films, instead offering a strong sense of the neighborhood that served as both a rallying cry for musicians who grew up there and a constant threat to their lives.”
    – HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“It aims small and never veers off-task. Whether or not you dig the album, the documentary offers a number of reasons to appreciate its ongoing legacy, with sufficient production values to hold the tribute together.”

    Tickets: http://ticketfly.com/event/571367

We welcome BONOBO back to Grand Central.

Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, is an artist very much at the peak of his powers. His 2013 album ‘The North Borders’ was the high watermark of his career to date: a masterful record, marrying Green’s inimitable melodic genius to cutting edge electronics, bass and drums.

An artist that constantly pushes himself outside of his musical comfort zone, Bonobo’s ranging personal tastes and regularly expanding range of synthesizers and instruments continue to take his productions to new levels. This outlook has earned him a reputation as one of the most pioneering figures in electronic music, in both his solo DJ sets and 12-piece live band shows.

    Support:

    KASTLE
    http://facebook.com/kastledub

Kastle’s forward-thinking music results from his long-time love of hip-hop and R&B, fused with the magnetizing effect that dubstep, garage and bass-heavy music has had on him. Last year, his track “Stay Forever” from the eponymous EP reached the iTunes Top 10 Best Electronic Songs of 2012, and he embarked on his highly successful ‘Stay Forever’ tour across North America, and into Australia and NewZealand.

  19. STRENGTH: The 3rd Annual Art Show and Auction

    Screen Shot 2014-09-12 at 11

Breast cancer is manageable and preventable. The key is early detection. However, studies have shown that minority women in Miami-Dade are less likely to seek preventative breast health care.

The Mammography Art Initiative (MAI) was established at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU in 2011 to address the need for better access to affordable breast health services and breast health education for underserved women in Miami. Through the fundraising efforts of the previous two years’ art shows, we have been able to raise over $50,000 in funds and services to sponsor mammograms and follow up care for hundreds of women all over Miami-Dade County.

The MAI has been inundated with support from local artist and the healthcare community. We are continually expanding our program and hope to close this health disparity gap in the near future.
