New Car Flyer

The Art of Cinematography (In Cars)

RED Digital Cinema Miami

You will be hard pressed to find a movie without at least one car scene and some of the most iconic movie scenes take place in them – Mad Max, True Detective, Fear and Loathing Las Vegas, Pulp Fiction, David Cronenberg’s Crash, Children of Men, Repo Men, the Virgin Suicides. The entire movie LOCKE was shot inside a car. So how do you deal with tight spaces, many actors, action scenes, lenses, lighting for mood, accounting for moving shots, rigs?

Not many resources online address this topic. That’s why we at FilmGate Miami, together with our friends at RED Digital Cinema, have created a workshop to answer these questions.

This is a hands-on workshop for participants with some knowledge of camera and lighting, who are interested in exploring original ways to interpret their car scenes visually. Students will practice their skills on a stationary car set within the RED Digital Cinema store.

Alamo Drafthouse Presents STAR WARS Marathon

Olympia Theater at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”

It’s been 39 years since audiences first read those words on movie screens. Thirty-nine years since we first learned of the Force, of Jedi, lightsabers, X-wings and the Death Star. But even after all those years, the Force is still strong with us all.

This August 27, 2016 the Alamo Drafthouse invites you to celebrate your love for the movie trilogy that changed so many of our lives for the better, with this incredibly rare digital screening of the special edition versions of A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and THE RETURN OF THE JEDI. Hitting the Olympia Theater screen for the first time ever, this marathon event will give Miami’s STAR WARS fans a chance to experience these classic adventures in a room filled with thousands of other devoted STAR WARS enthusiasts!

We’re hoping to see crowds of people dressed in their finest Jedi robes or Galactic Empire uniforms, so start working on your costumes now (or just dust off your favorite from your collection). Live emcees at each event will host costume contests and trivia games, and we’ll have photographers on hand to capture all the excitement.

For this event, all children must have a ticket to enter regardless of age. No babes in arms.

Just the Tip Comedy Show

Yo Space

Danny Benavente is stepping in as our new host starting this month forward so join us in giving him a warm welcome for his first time hosting solo for us!As the title suggests, the comics will be collecting tips throughout the show, so make sure to bring some cash and make it rain on them as they entertain the heck out of you. The other slight difference, is that we’ll be doing more of a long format show. Comedians rarely have the chance in local rooms to hone their longer sets, akin to the comedy specials you see on TV. This new night will give more developed comics the chance to work on their material, preparing them for the big leap into the next stage of their careers. So come laugh it up with us and support our local comedians, before they all vanish into the smokey mist of Colorado, LA and NY.As an added bonus we have Master Feathers providing the musical curation behind the decks before and after the show!Main Average Joe event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/316272085430064/

One Night Only Screening: NICK CAVE “ONCE MORE WITH FEELING”

O Cinema Wynwood

ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING will be the first ever opportunity anyone will have to hear Skeleton Tree, the sixteenth studio album from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds!

Get your tickets now at http://bit.ly/nickcavemiami

The film will screen in cinemas across the world on September 8th 2016, immediately prior to the release of Skeleton Tree the following day. Originally a performance based concept, ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING evolved into something much more significant as Andrew Dominik (KILLING THEM SOFTLY) delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s narration and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white and color, in both 3D and 2D, the result is fragile, raw and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.

BUMBLEFEST 2016: PureHoney Turns 5 w. THE STARGAZER LILIES, BLEUBIRD, ARMAGEDDON MAN, OTHER BODY, CHAUCER & 20 More!

Respectable Street

THE STARGAZER LILIES perform at BUMBLEFEST on Saturday, September 17 Fans of shoegaze will recognize this outfit as the evolved presence of husband/wife creative musical duo of John Cep and Kim Field, formerly of Soundpool. “Since the creation of TSL we’ve kept things pretty much about heavy guitars and lush hushed vocals with minimalistic drum beats,” explains Field. “We see it as a sort of The Shangri-La’s meets Slowdive meets Pink Floyd live at Pompeii.

With the addition of Tammy Hirata on drums, the band has evolved their sound organically in their first pair of releases, the latest beingDoor to the Sun, but are already looking into the future, “we’re going to be trying something totally different with the third album,” says Field. “We’ve always pieced our songs together in the studio. This time we’re going to be working the songs up as a group and playing them live before recording.”

There are many parallels that could be drawn between this band and how they conduct themselves professionally with Rullman and his baby, PureHoney. It wouldn’t even require advanced poetic skills to evoke the sentiment. You can hear it in their music, you can see it in the way that this magazine is properly curated and still in awe of live music. Will this publication be around another five years? Time will tell. The collective hope is that it is and that it thrives. Fold out the poster and tack it on your wall. Like Field explains of her band and what I’ll appropriate for this anniversary:

“Collaborating with someone you are deeply intimate with is a beautiful thing.”

THE STARGAZER LILIES, Armageddon Man, Bleubird, Celebratorrrrrr, Chaucer, Cog Nomen, Dan Bonebrake, The Dewars, Fat Sun, Grey & Orange, John Ralston, Keith Welsh, Killmama, Lindsey Mills, Mo’booty, Other Body, Peyote Coyote, Pocket Of Lollipops, Problem Child, Rivers, Similar Prisoners, Sweet Bronco, Tree Swifts, Wallace, Whiskey Wasps

THE STARGAZER LILIES perform at BUMBLEFEST on Saturday, September 17 on the 500 Block of Clematis Street, Dntn West Palm Beach at Subculture Coffee, Hullabaloo Patio, O’Shea’s and Respectable Street. 25 Bands, 5 Stages, 6pm-4am and the Pre-Party September 16 at Gramps with Heavy Drag and Peyote Coyote. http://www.thestargazerlilies.com

JAMES BAY

Fillmore Miami Beach

Multi-talented singer, guitarist and songwriter, James Bay comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 / 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, April 22nd at 10 AM. James Bay is a singular modern talent; an old head on young shoulders, a damn good guitar player and an even better songwriter.  A true soul singer, chasing “that goose bumps moment” by channeling artists such as Miles DavisBruce Springsteen and James Blake, his music is intensely personal. “I’m trying to keep things human and emotional,” he explains. “It’s hard to know what the balance is, but you know it when you hear it. It’s such a personal process that it’s hard to share stuff sometimes.” But share he does, casting a light onto his attempts to make sense of the world, and a young man’s discovery of love and loss. He is the very best kind of British vocalist, singer and songwriter grounded by melodic truth and raw emotion. “I’m trying to make songs that make people feel something and, if I’m lucky, even move them,” he explains.

Live@Sweat: MR ENTERTAINMENT & THE POOKIESMACKERS and SHARK VALLEY SISTERS

Sweat Records

This installment of Live@Sweat could be called “It Came From Broward.” Both Shark Valley Sisters and Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers have deep roots in the local music scene and have made their home bases in Broward. Shark Valley Sisters consists of former members of Load, Holy Terrors, Southern Flaw and more. Rob Elba is chief songwriter and has been on a tear since forming the band with the ever-so-enthusiastic Fausto Figueredo. They have released 3 EP’s and are on there verge of putting out their first slab of wax, a 10″ entitled “Kill The Day.” Come out and be the first to hear these new tunes.

As for Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers? Don’t let the name throw you off. Sure you have seen and laughed at the name for ages, but this collective based in Hollywood, headed by Steve “Mr. Entertainment” Toth has been playing every juke joint and street corner since the 19-somethings. Though more than a dozen people can claim to be or to have been a Pookiesmacker, the band consists of Barry Stock, John Mahoney, Brandon Samdahl, Rob Budowsky and “hummingbird hands” herself, Emile Milgrim. The band has put out 5 full-lengths over the years and are preparing to start recording their newest batch story songs at City Of Progress Studio with the Miami music man Andrew “Le Spam” Yeomanson. This half a dozen always delivers.

The legendary guitar driven jamband, Gov’t Mule comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Sunday, September 25th, 2016 / 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, April 22nd at Noon.

Rock torchbearers Gov’t Mule are celebrating their 20th anniversary with an extensive tour and a series of dynamic live archival releases that highlight the group’s versatility and epic, fearless live performances. The deep chemistry and steely confidence shared by the quartet allow them to tackle any form of music and stamp it their own while remaining true to the spirit and intent of the original. This can of course be heard any time guitarist-singer Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis take the stage.  No two Gov’t Mule shows are alike, as the band draws on the more than 300 songs in their repertoire to create a unique experience each and every time. BEARTOOTH

Revolution Live

In the two short years since their debut album was cooked up in front man Caleb Shomo’s basement, BEARTOOTH has catapulted into heavy music’s stratosphere. “The Lines,” “Beaten in Lips,” “In Between,” and “Body Bag” collected over 10 million views on YouTube, as BEARTOOTH trekked around the globe with Slipknot, Pierce The Veil, Bring Me The Horizon, Sleeping With Sirens, Reading & Leeds, Download Festival and the Vans Warped Tour.

BEARTOOTH has as much in common with stomping metalcore as old-school punk, vintage screamo, and harder edged pop punk, with a bit of cinematic extravagance.

ALESSIA CARA

Fillmore Miami Beach

ALESSIA CARA brings her uniquely soulful sound to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Tuesday, October 28th, 2016 at 7:30PM.

There’s a new breed of pop star seizing hold of the world’s airwaves and online — more accurately, a conscious pop star who’s set to subversively top charts and sway hearts and minds. This enigma embodied is 18-year-old Canadian-Italian Alessia Cara, who’s riding the refrains of her ironic anthem, “Here” which garnered over 500,000 total streams in its first week, a resounding praise for its freshness and insight. Powerful stuff from a teenage voice; in fact, that’s powerful stuff from anyone who’s ever put pen to pad in name of art. And Alessia’s mature pen game is matched by her larger than life voice; she’s dazzlingly chameleon like, boasting the kind of versatility that makes Rihanna such a force. In short, Alessia has cause to be confident. But she’s still the bashful, small town girl even in the big city. “I want my music to be cool and reflective of my influences — Drake, Amy Winehouse, Ed Sheeran — but still new,” she explains. “I didn’t expect everything to feel so natural and organic. And I can’t believe how quickly it’s going.”  Alessia is equal parts fresh face, old soul, newcomer, and lifer. She’s going, quickly. Now it’s up to the rest of the world to catch up and catch on.

Even as they’ve been embraced by the mainstream, Tegan and Sara consciously operate to the left of popular culture – their lyrical and social wisdom comes from an outside vantage looking in.
