Implied Interaction: Selected works from the CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection

Implied Interaction: The Role of Participant, Artist and Viewer  in selected works from the CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection

February 24 – July 17, 2016

A selection of nine works from the CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection, Implied Interaction explores the artists’ imprint on and/or interaction with a specific work. Whether implied or explicit, each artwork exemplifies how the viewer forms a lasting conversation to complete each piece. Artists represented in this exhibition are past winners of the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts that honors artists of Cuban descent, including Felipe Dulzaides, Coco Fusco, Guerra de la Paz, Jillian Mayer, Ana Mendieta, Gean Moreno, Ernesto Oroza and Ernesto de la Vega Pujol. The exhibition is a brief encounter with each artist’s esteemed practice and provides a glimpse into the depth of the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellows in Visual Arts.

Since 2011, the CINTAS Foundation has entrusted MDC’s Museum of Art + Design to serve as stewards of the CINTAS Fellows Collection, comprised of nearly 300 pieces by artists of Cuban descent living outside Cuba who have received prestigious CINTAS Fellowships, awarded since 1963.

What can we say about The Front Bottoms? We know we love them: a punk band that uses acoustic guitar, indie-rock dance grooves, Springsteen-y keyboard lines (this they might deny). It’s hook-filled… it’s anthemic… it’s confessional. Maybe Joni Mitchell by way of Green Day? They come to Revolution Live on May 10th…get your tickets here.

Swedish rock band Refused wasn’t just ruminating about the lasting impact of popular culture when it began its 1998 album The Shape Of Punk To Come with a lyric about classics never going out of style — it was also taking stock of its own turbulent existence, which met an ignominious end. SET & SETTING “If you’re going to listen to heavy post-rock like this, it’s best to do so on an overcast, gloomy day to get the full impact. While a good chunk of the Temporary Residence Limited roster mines these same peaks and valleys, Set and Setting’s debut LP, Equanimity, proves there’s still gold to be found out in those hills.” – DecibelMagazine.com https://www.facebook.com/setandsetting http://www.setandsettingband.com/

HIVELORDS “We are vignettes of psyche and chemical life spun by the darkness of another Mind; a subliminal infestation occupying sonic space. The vast horror of this field is a thirst never quenched; infinite Sisyphus idols moving planets on top of a grain of sand black. Nothing is not enough nothing. Those unfamiliar portals…the cruel chambers they must guard… A tendril of wild energy thrown from an endless loop; one coronal mass ejection spewing banal and awesome spheres. Knowing is lying. Be our truth.” https://www.facebook.com/HIVELORDS https://hivelords.bandcamp.com/

REAPERMANSER “Reapermanser is all about their fast, loud, obnoxious, relentless onslaught of heavy riffs, and explosive drumming. Multi-talented singer, guitarist and songwriter, James Bay comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 / 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, April 22nd at 10 AM. James Bay is a singular modern talent; an old head on young shoulders, a damn good guitar player and an even better songwriter.  A true soul singer, chasing “that goose bumps moment” by channeling artists such as Miles DavisBruce Springsteen and James Blake, his music is intensely personal. “I’m trying to keep things human and emotional,” he explains. “It’s hard to know what the balance is, but you know it when you hear it. It’s such a personal process that it’s hard to share stuff sometimes.” But share he does, casting a light onto his attempts to make sense of the world, and a young man’s discovery of love and loss. He is the very best kind of British vocalist, singer and songwriter grounded by melodic truth and raw emotion. “I’m trying to make songs that make people feel something and, if I’m lucky, even move them,” he explains.

The legendary guitar driven jamband, Gov’t Mule comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Sunday, September 25th, 2016 / 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, April 22nd at Noon.

Rock torchbearers Gov’t Mule are celebrating their 20th anniversary with an extensive tour and a series of dynamic live archival releases that highlight the group’s versatility and epic, fearless live performances. The deep chemistry and steely confidence shared by the quartet allow them to tackle any form of music and stamp it their own while remaining true to the spirit and intent of the original. This can of course be heard any time guitarist-singer Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis take the stage.  No two Gov’t Mule shows are alike, as the band draws on the more than 300 songs in their repertoire to create a unique experience each and every time. Their steadily expanding fan base knows that the Mulealways has something special waiting for them. Expect the unexpected.

FloriDadaians rejoice: Animal Collective have added another leg to their 2016 tour, and will play at The Fillmore on Nov 10th. Tickets are available online.

Even as they’ve been embraced by the mainstream, Tegan and Sara consciously operate to the left of popular culture – their lyrical and social wisdom comes from an outside vantage looking in. Paradoxically, the essential message that underpins their worldview and identity is inclusion.  Their latest effort, Love You To Death, featuring the first single “Boyfriend,” will be released this June.  Pre sales for the show begin on April 29th, and can be purchased online.
