Improv Lab for Filmmakers by FilmGate

One of the most difficult tasks for filmmakers is to work with actors in the creative and collaborative process.

The art of improvisation is becoming a necessary tool to explore and create for film, both from the filmmaker and actor’s perspective; whether it’s extracting new content from existing material, to diving deeper into the actor’s ability to improvise and create, both sides of the camera must learn to think on their toes to produce the best performance possible.

In this Improv Lab for Filmmakers, presented by Just The Funny in collaboration with FilmGate Interactive, filmmakers will work with an expert improv instructor David Christopher, with a background in film to incorporate improvisation as a tool to work with both material and actors. Participating filmmakers will get to learn the structure of improvisation and then apply it to their own material in a fully interactive structure, while also getting the actor’s perspective. The Lab will also give filmmakers the opportunity to network and collaborate with other filmmakers.

– An introduction and overview of improv structure
– Intensive scenework
– Improvising from existing material & the directorial process
– Networking
– Q & A with the instructor

Limited to 30 people*

EARTH WIND & FIRE at The Fillmore

Believe It!

Legendary R&B superstars Earth Wind & Fire come to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015 / 8PM.  Tickets are on sale Friday, March 27th / 10AM.

Earth, Wind & Fire is one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands.  EWF’s all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. The band could harmonize like a smooth Motown group, work a simmering groove like the J.B.’s, or improvise like a jazz fusion outfit. Plus, their stage shows were often just as elaborate and dynamic as George Clinton’s P-Funk empire. More than just versatility for its own sake, EWF’s eclecticism was part of a broader concept informed by a cosmic, mystical spirituality and an uplifting positivity the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the early days of Sly & the Family Stone. Tying it all together was their accomplished songwriting intricate, unpredictable arrangements and firm grasp of hooks and structure.  It madeEWF one of the tightest bands in funk. At their best, Earth, Wind & Fire seemingly took all that came before them and wrapped it up into one dizzying, spectacular package that is still evident today.  Don’t miss this show!

Reserved Seat tickets for Earth Wind & Fire are $94.50, $80.50 and $56.50.  They are on sale Friday, March 27th / 10AM at or charge by phone 800-745-3000 and at the Fillmore Box Office during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 11AM – 6PM and during show days).  A limited number of VIP Reserved Seat tickets are also available.

TYCHO: SUMMER 2015 TOUR | AUTOGRAF | Grand Central

WEDNESDAY | JUNE 10th 2015 | 8 PM | All Ages

Grand Central + Poplife + AEG Live present

Summer 2015 Tour

For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Reaching an entire new realm of sonic possibilities this time out, Awake is situated in the present, reaching Hansen’s vision of Tycho like never before. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco, California based designer toured extensively, accompanied by a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) continued to join Scott on the road, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision for what the future of what Tycho could be. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current incarnation.

In a cabin near Lake Tahoe last winter, Hansen and Brown began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with O’Connor that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with live instruments coming to the forefront. Perhaps it was leading up to this all along, songs like “Montana” and “Awake” perfectly exemplify Tycho’s new, amped up, sound – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works but with a clear view to the future. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might have previously layered under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns. Together they bridge an ethereal middle ground between old memories and new experiences, “While I grew up in California, I spent a lot of time as a kid in places like Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Montana,” says Hansen, ”I got back in touch with those areas over the past few years and they inspired me a great deal.” Hansen went on to build those images into the foundation behind the artwork for Awake, “I created the cover art to be a symbol, or a flag, to represent this fictional region comprised of idealized elements of all these western states.”

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I’ve dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition from Hansen’s delicate solo approach to constructing a song, tweaking each peak and valley, but ‘Awake’ is three like-minded people coming together where music becomes the sole purpose and true expression becomes the result.

WHO:           THE GET UP KIDS

WHAT:            The Get Up Kids are a Kansas City-based American rock band that was a major player in the mid-90’s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe.   Seven years after what looked to be their final album Guilt Show, with the group disbanding a year later after 10 years of constant touring, The Get Up Kids returned to the studio sparked by a spur-of-the-moment decision to start writing songs together again, made while they were rehearsing to promote the tenth anniversary edition of their breakout album Something to Write Home About. And so, after touring across four continents to sold out crowds too many times to count, after becoming a crucial part of what has been called the “second wave of emo” in the 90’s and influencing a list of bands as long as your arm, after more than15 years, 4 acclaimed studio albums, a collection of rarities, a live record, numerous 7”s and EPs the Kansas City five piece – Matthew Pryor on vocals and guitar, Rob Pope on bass, Jim Suptic on guitars and vocals, James Dewees on keyboards and Ryan Pope on drums – are proving that the final chapter for The Get Up Kids has yet to be written.

Popular singer songwriter for the iconic group the KillersBrandon Flowers brings his solo act to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre Wednesday, August 19th, 2015 / 8PM. Tickets are on sale Friday, April 24th / 10AM.

Brandon Flowers was the most popular singer/songwriters of the new wave revival, which swept through America and England during the early 2000s. As frontman of the Killers, he helped popularize a genre that hadn’t been fashionable for nearly two decades, drawing influence from a number of ’80s synth pop bands — including New OrderEcho & the Bunnymen, and the Psychedelic Furs — while writing the songs that comprised his band’s multi-platinum debut, Hot FussFlowers also proved to be a super-sized media personality, gathering headlines for his clothing and controversial, outspoken opinions. Although the Killers retooled their sound with each album, the group rarely subscribed to convention — and Flowers seemed happy to be the most unconventional of them all. He decided to launch a solo career in 2010 and Flamingo, his first album of solo material, was released that fall.Flowers returned to the Killers for 2012’s Battle Born but resumed his separate solo career in 2015 with The Desired Effect, a record produced by Ariel Rechtshaid.

General Admission tickets for Brandon Flowers are $30.00.  They are on sale Friday, April 24th / 10AM at or charge by phone 800-745-3000 and at the Fillmore Box Office during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 11AM – 6PM and during show days).  A limited number of VIP Reserved Seat tickets are also available.

Prolific and imaginative jamband Umphrey’s McGee brings its high energy and multi instrumental act to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 / 9PM.  Tickets are on sale Friday, April 24th / 10AM.

“Umphrey’s McGee stand revealed as consummate musical alchemists, deftly reconfiguring sounds from rock’s vast panoply of styles.” Entertainment Weekly.
Fans who have followed Umphrey’s McGee for any period of time know that there are only two guarantees: you never know what you’re going to get, and Umphrey’s always delivers. After 17-plus years of performing more than 100 concerts annually, releasing eight studio albums and selling more than 3.5 million tracks online, Umphrey’s McGee might be forgiven if they chose to rest on their laurels. But then that wouldn’t be consistent with the work ethic demonstrated by the band, which consistently attempts to raise the bar, setting and achieving new goals since forming on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Indiana, in 1997. After releasing their eighth studio album, Similar Skin, the first for their own indie label, Nothing Too Fancy (N2F) Music , the group continue to push the envelope and test the limits. Their brand-new studio album, The London Session, was a dream come true for the members having been recorded at the legendary Studio Two at historic Abbey Road. The stealth recording session yielded 10 tracks in a single day, proving once again, the prolificUM waits for no one. The clever arrangements, meticulously crafted chordal interplay, and virtuoso instrumentation put Umphrey’s McGee in a category all their own. “Our live show is malleable and every night is its own thing, where you never know where things are going to go,” keyboardist Joel Cummins explains.
General Admission tickets for Umphrey’s McGee are $27.50 in Advance and $30.00 Day of Show. They are on sale Friday, April 24th / 10AM at or charge by phone 800-745-3000and at the Fillmore Box Office during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 11AM – 6PM and during show days).

Grand Central + Radio-Active Records + Poplife present

**Only Southeastern U.S. Performance**

Front 242 is a Belgian electronic music group that pioneered the style they call electronic body music or EBM. They were a profound influence on the electronic and industrial music genres.

After signing with the Wax Trax! label in 1984, they started their first U.S. tour with Ministry. In 1988, Front by Front was released, which included “Headhunter” (with a video by Anton Corbijn), becoming the band’s first club hit, reaching #13 on the US Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart. They were also involved in side projects. Richard 23 played in the Revolting Cocks, and Jean-Luc De Meyer sang for Bigod 20 for their debut single, “The Bog” in 1990.

Tyranny (For You), released in 1991, became the band’s highest charting album, reaching #95 on the Billboard 200. Sony/Epic signed the band and acquired the rights to their back catalog. A broader public was exposed to their music in 1992 in the film Single White Female. The video playing in a key scene is Front 242’s “Rhythm Of Time”, from Tyranny (For You). Front 242 released two albums in 1993 on Epic’s sub-label RRE and performed on the main stage of the 1993 Lollapalooza tour. The four core members regrouped in 1998, performed on their first tour in five years and started a recording contract in the U.S. with Metropolis Records.

In the 2000s, they made occasional appearances in Latin America and Europe, even being rejoined by Dirk Bergen for a sold out reunion concert under the original lineup of Bresanutti, Bergen, Codenys and De Meyer. The band re-released its entire backcatalogue via Alpha Matrix.

After a seven year break, they released the 2014 EP “Out Of Sight” on Static Cold Media. In 2015, LADLN are back with their strongest release to date, “Vanity Will Perish” which peaked at #3 on the German Alternative Charts. Popular Indie Band Walk The Moon comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre Tuesday, Octobere 13th, 2015 / 8PM.  Tickets are on sale Friday, May 15th / Noon. They recently performed to a sold out crowd at Revolution Live in Ft. Lauderdale, so get your tickets right away!
Formed in Cincinnati by singer/keyboardist Nicholas PetriccaWalk The Moon built up a devoted following on the strength of their ecstatic live show and their undeniably infectious single “Anna Sun.” A relentless touring machine with an ever-snowballing family of fans, the band quickly graduated from Ohio club scene favorites to an international force to be reckoned with.  In concert, it’s clear that Walk The Moon’s live show is not a spectator sport.  Instead, it’s an interactive celebration of life and love, a communal commitment to joy and living in the moment. Onstage, Petricca leads audiences in a mass exorcism of the things that bring them down, casting out the demons of doubt and insecurity with hands raised to the sky.  Riding the wave of their platinum selling second album Talking Is Hard, the results speak for themselves.  Lead single “Shut Up And Dance” became an undeniable pop-rock anthem.  An ode to freeing yourself from the shackles of self-consciousness and embracing the present, it’s already a live favorite, with a sing-along chorus that works audiences up into a frenzy.  The album is filled with raw vocal performances, heavy rock riffs, new wave quirks, and stylish percussion which make for a futuristic marriage with lyrical themes of self-empowerment, growth, and survival.   “What we’ve ended up with is a bunch of really committed, confident shouts into the darkness,” says Petricca.  As they return to the road, Walk The Moon is finding that the darkness is full of eager fans and soon-to-be-converts, all shouting back, singing along until the lights come up.
General Admission tickets for Walk The Moon Tuesday, October 13th, 2015 / 8PM are $30.00 in advance and $34.00 day of show.  They are on sale Friday, May 15th / Noon at or charge by phone 800-745-3000 and at the Fillmore Box Office during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 11AM – 6PM and during show days).  A limited number of Reserved Seat tickets are also available for $40.50.
