Manual Cinema presents: My Soul’s Shadow

“To describe Manual Cinema as just a shadow puppet show is to say that Pixar makes cartoons” – Chicago Tribune

Celebrated Chicago-based company Manual Cinema presents an original piece commissioned by O, Miami: My Soul’s Shadow, an immersive evening of live, cinematic shadow puppetry based on the world of twentieth-century Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.

PURCHASE TICKETS

Using hundreds of paper shadow puppets, six old-school overhead projectors, and an original score performed live by the chamber ensemble Nu Deco, Manual Cinema will transform a Little River // Miami warehouse dock through light and shadow into a fantastic landscape inspired by Lorca’s surreal imagination.

Before the performance, audience members can interact with art installations of light, shadow, and sound in an intimate outdoor courtyard.

After the show, everyone is invited behind the screen to encounter the inner workings of Manual Cinema’s artistry. Hot Satellite will fire up the wood-burning oven and serve complimentary handmade pizza, and the bar will be open.

Tickets are $30 and include pizza and free wine courtesy of Whole Foods.

O, Miami’s commission of Manual Cinema is made possible thanks to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Miami, 1981

PURCHASE TICKETS

Join O, Miami, The Kampong, and edible South Florida magazine as we travel back in time to 1981.

In the wake of the McDuffie riots and the Mariel boat lift, Miami had the highest murder rate in its history, leading to TIME magazine’s infamous “Paradise Lost” feature story. But beneath the headlines, the seeds of Miami’s cultural revolution were being planted by a small but dedicated group of writers who were meeting regularly in a tiny Coral Gables bookshop called Books & Books.

We’ll celebrate the poetry from 1981’s Miami with a reading curated by Michael Hettich and enjoy 1981-themed food & cocktails curated by edible South Florida. You don’t HAVE to dress in 1981 period clothing, but it would be a lot cooler if you did.

Tickets are $15 if purchased before April 16th and $20 after.

MDC Live Arts presents – RUBBERBANDDance Group

RBDG reconciles opposing dance worlds and their aesthetics: the spontaneity, fearlessness and risk-taking of hip-hop culture with the refinement and choreographic maturity of ballet and contemporary dance. Hailing from Montreal and led by the remarkable duo of Victor Quijada and Anne Plamondon, the group features six exceptional performers whose backgrounds range from classical, contemporary, and urban dance to circus arts.

“Like a brilliant mad scientist of dance, Victor Quijada has mixed forms and styles and emerged with a gorgeous hybrid of hip-hop, contemporary dance and ballet that transcends its parts and become something entirely new.” -Bay State Banner

Aimee Nezhukumatathil Bringing the Outside In: Poetry and Wonder

Lony Haley-Nelson notes: “Wonder is valuable… because it leads us to learn and remember.” Using the language and vocabulary of myth, folklore, science, and natural history as inspiration, this generative workshop will help you jump-start the blank page in front of you. We’ll participate in several immersion ideas for poems and journaling (some outdoors, weather permitting) to help you find new ways to revitalize your writing. Our time will be divided into composing drafts; chatting about various myths, articles, essays, and poems; and sharing your own poems in a workshop format. This class is ideal for both the beginner and someone wanting to refresh their poetry-writing strategies.

Aimee Nezhukumatathil is the author of three books of poetry: Lucky Fish, winner of the Hoffer Grand Prize for Prose and Independent Books; At the Drive-In Volcano; and Miracle Fruit. Her poems and essays have appeared in American Poetry Review, Quarterly West, New England Review, Ploughshares, FIELD, Antioch Review, Prairie Schooner, Slate, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Southern Review, and Tin House. She has been awarded an NEA Fellowship in poetry, the Glenna Luschia Prize from Prairie Schooner, and the Angoff Award from The Literary Review.

George O’Connor The Art of Graphic Storytelling

Comics and graphic novels have become a medium that allows for all manner of storytelling options and varieties.

In this workshop, we will explore the art of graphic storytelling, and the various techniques employed in telling a visual story. We’ll examine various tools of the trade, and combine all these lessons into creating a short comics story of your own devising, in the subject and format of your choice.

Artists of all levels are welcome — cartooning is not about being able to make a beautiful illustration — cartooning is the art of communicating ideas through your drawings. Think of your drawing style as your handwriting—maybe it’s simple block letters, perhaps it’s a flowery cursive, as long as it can clearly convey your ideas.

Register before April 15 and receive a signed limited edition print from George’s upcoming book, Apollo:The Brilliant God

George O’Connor is the author and illustrator of The New York Times bestselling graphic novel series, Olympians – a projected twelve volume series retelling classical Greek mythology in comics form, one god at a time. The most recent volume, Ares: Bringer of War, is an all-ages comics distillation of The Iliad in 66 pages. In addition to Olympians, George adapted the 1634 journal of Dutch explorer Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert into the graphic novel Journey into Mohawk Country, and was the illustrator of acclaimed playwright Adam Rapp’s first graphic novel Ball Peen Hammer. George is also the author and illustrator of several picture books.

Rachel Deahl Publishing 101

Writing is solitary work – publishing takes a team. This crash-course aims to shed light on the ABC’s of publishing, both via traditional houses and self-publishing. The first half will focus on navigating the realms of traditional publishing, starting with an explanation of the Big 5 houses, mid-size players and independents, and how they all tend to operate. We’ll explore fundamentals such as what is covered in your contract, how to get an agent and what to expect of them, how the buying of rights works, and what to expect from a publisher once you land a deal.

The second half of the course will be dedicated to the basics of self-publishing. We’ll discuss the biggest self-publishing platforms and how to choose the right one for your work, how and when to consult outside professionals before you self-publish, how to monetize your self-published work, and finally, the importance of branding and how to market your work.

Rachel Deahl is a writer and editor with more than ten years of experience covering book publishing. As news director at Publishers Weekly she writes about business trends, technology, self-publishing and rights. She also writes a weekly column about book deals (called Deals), that details the hottest projects being acquired at the major publishers. She is the author of the Publishers Weekly original e-book, Publishing 101, and has been a speaker at various conferences, including SXSW, BookExpo America, Miami Book Fair International and The Frankfurt Book Fair.

EARTH WIND & FIRE

AT THE INTIMATE FILLMORE MIAMI BEACH

AT THE JACKIE GLEASON THEATRE

TUESDAY, JUNE 2ND, 2015

TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH/10AM

Legendary R&B superstars Earth Wind & Fire come to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015 / 8PM.  Tickets are on sale Friday, March 27th / 10AM.

Earth, Wind & Fire is one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands.  EWF’s all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. The band could harmonize like a smooth Motown group, work a simmering groove like the J.B.’s, or improvise like a jazz fusion outfit. Plus, their stage shows were often just as elaborate and dynamic as George Clinton’s P-Funk empire. More than just versatility for its own sake, EWF’s eclecticism was part of a broader concept informed by a cosmic, mystical spirituality and an uplifting positivity the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the early days of Sly & the Family Stone. Tying it all together was their accomplished songwriting intricate, unpredictable arrangements and firm grasp of hooks and structure.  It madeEWF one of the tightest bands in funk. At their best, Earth, Wind & Fire seemingly took all that came before them and wrapped it up into one dizzying, spectacular package that is still evident today.  Don’t miss this show!

Reserved Seat tickets for Earth Wind & Fire are $94.50, $80.50 and $56.50.  They are on sale Friday, March 27th / 10AM at LiveNation.com or charge by phone 800-745-3000 and at the Fillmore Box Office during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 11AM – 6PM and during show days).  A limited number of VIP Reserved Seat tickets are also available.

All dates, acts and ticket prices are subject to change without notice. All tickets are subject to applicable taxes, parking and service and handling charges.

Though the album earned critical acclaim her big break came the following year, when she collaborated with Iggy Azalea on the single “Fancy.”Released in February 2014, the song became both artists’ first number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 that May That month, XCX released another single, “Boom Clap,” which introduced a more streamlined, accessible sound and charted in the Top Ten in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia, becoming her biggest solo hit to date. AN INTIMATE NIGHT OUT WITH NEON TREES

“This tour is really for our core fans. At the end of last year we had made plans to take the year off, but honestly we got bored at home. We just love touring that much,” said front man Tyler Glenn.  “We’re going to play songs from all three albums and it will be an entirely new show.   We chose smaller clubs and theaters to make it a communal experience for us and the audience.” Neon Trees – comprising Tyler Glenn (lead vocals, keys), Chris Allen (guitars), Branden Campbell (bass), and Elaine Bradley (drums, vocals) – released their third album Pop Psychology on April 22, 2014.   The album, recorded in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Los Angeles, CA, and their hometown of Provo, UT with longtime collaborator Tim Pagnotta spawned the RIAA Gold-certified single“Sleeping With A Friend,” which won a BMI Publishing Award in 2014 and charted in the Top 15 of the Billboard Hot 100. Pop Psychology is the follow up to Picture Show, which featured the RIAA double platinum single“Everybody Talks,” which charted in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Neon Trees’ debut album, Habits, was released in 2010 and featured the double platinum smash single “Animal.”
