The band’s songs were about the evils of society and the band’s name was a play on HITLER YOUTH; comparing Reagan to Hitler due to the Republican party’s fascist tendencies. Revolution Live

Over Atmosphere’s  more than twenty-year career they have managed to continually tweak and strive to perfect their formula, while neither straying too far off their path, nor resorting to playing it safe. Starting at Overcast, the group’s first official album, and traveling through years of new albums, side projects and various collaborations, Atmosphere’s music has evolved in a way that differs from many of their peers and predecessors. As Atmosphere steps into their next year of making music, Slug & Antshow no signs of slowing, compromising or losing sight of their vision. Nor has time revealed any diminishing of those qualities that have brought them this far. Musically, Ant has continued to define Atmosphere’s sound, ranging from a healthy mixture of upbeat and fun, to the oft more iconic, moody and personal. As for the lyrics, Slugstarted his passion for rhyming with an obsessive-like penchant for the way words intersect, as well as how those words can be manipulated for unexpected and clever meanings. Their passion and creative spark are as illuminate as ever. Slug and Ant still have plenty of stories to tell.

Starship Troopers in 35mm

Coral Gables Art Cinema

Sometimes satire is so biting and so on target that it goes over the audience’s head. Such was the fate for Starship Troopers upon its release 20 years ago. Starting out as a script called Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine, director Paul Verhoeven’s attention was drawn to Robert Heinlein’s controversial sci-fi novel Starship Troopers, which had similar elements. But Verhoeven hated the novel, calling it “a very right-wing book” and proceeded to satirize the notorious militaristic and fascistic elements within. Johnny Rico (an “Argentinean” Casper Van Dien), along with girlfriend Carmen (Denise Richards) and best friend Carl (Neil Patrick Harris), enlists in the Federal Service after graduation, which is the only path to full citizenship in this world. During training, the insectoid species of Arachnids from planet Klendathu launch an asteroid that destroys Buenos Aires, instigating an interstellar war. Collaborating with RoboCop screenwriter Edward Neumeier, Verhoeven created an almost cartoonish portrayal of fascism in space, complete with shot for shot recreations of scenes from Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will. Calum Marsh of The Atlantic defended the film in his article titled, “Starship Troopers: One of the Most Misunderstood Movies Ever”, where he praises the film’s critique of “the military-industrial complex, the jingoism of American foreign policy, and a culture that privileges reactionary violence over sensitivity and reason.” For his part, Verhoeven called his work the “most expensive art movie ever made.”

The film holds an amazing 100% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, calling it: “A lavish modern fairy tale celebrated for its amazing special effects, catchy songs, and Julie Andrews’s legendary performance in the title role.” The story of how author P.L. Travers and Walt Disney collaborated to bring Mary Poppins to the big screen became the subject of the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks. The band was initially signed to independent punk record label Hellcat Records, releasing five albums and making a name for themselves locally through constant touring and yearly St. Patrick’s Day week shows held in and around Boston. The single “Tessie” became the band’s first mainstream hit and one of their biggest charting singles. The band’s final Hellcat release, The Warrior’s Code, included the song “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”; the song was featured in the Academy Award-winning movie The Departed, and went on to become the band’s Platinum-selling single and remains one of their best-known songs. The band then began releasing music through their own imprint label. The Meanest of Times made its debut at No. 20 on the Billboard charts and featured the successful single, “The State of Massachusetts”, while Going Out in Style was an even bigger success, making its debut at No. 6, giving the band their highest-charting album. The band’s eighth studio album, Signed and Sealed in Blood made its debut at No. 9 on the Billboard charts. The band is currently recording their ninth studio album which they expect to have released by the end of the year or early 2017.

City and Colour

Revolution Live

For someone like City and Colour’s Dallas Green, it’s hard to imagine that there’s much left to search for – he’s traversed the globe on tour, released numerous albums (one most recently as You+Me with Alecia Moore, aka P!nk) and collected scores of accolades. Though Green is a musician, he doesn’t make a show of things: that’s the songs’ job. Thus he’s done this all quietly, intentionally, still looking for the next answer or dog-eared chapter each record holds. And now he once again uncovered something new: a certain kind of family in his bandmates. Even more pivotal was trying to capture the essence of their live show symbiosis in the studio; which comes through with an undeniable force. For a project that was very much about the inner world of Green, these relationships have morphed City and Colour into something with more emotive power than ever before: the layers go beyond just music and lyrics, into the people creating the songs themselves.

An American Tail

Coral Gables Art Cinema

Produced by Steven Spielberg, An American Tail is the delightful animated musical adventure that tells the story of Fievel Mousekewitz, a young Russian mouse migrating to America. When Fievel is separated from his family, he quickly learns that he must take charge of his own fate because the mean streets of New York City are fraught with cats, rats, perils and friendships. The film’s theme song, “Somewhere Out There,” received a number of accolades, including Grammy’s for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture, Song of the Year, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Dinosaur Jr.

Culture Room

Dinosaur Jr. is now widely recognized as one of the most significant American rock bands of all time; the sound they pioneered in the late-80s having permeated through the past 20 years. Preceding Nirvana by several years, they were instrumental in bringing the crashing sounds of lead guitar back to indie rock. It wasn’t just their signature metallic haze that made an impression on listeners; their effects-laden guitars were wrapped around some of the best songwriting of the decade. The first three albums — Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me and Bug — were cult masterpieces and when the original line up of Mascis, Barlow and drummer Murph re-formed in 2005 for select live dates it was apparent that the years apart had not eroded any of their vitality. In fact, many critics claimed their shows were even better than they used to be. It was natural, then, that the band would begin to work on new material.

Despicable Me in 3D

Coral Gables Art Cinema

Evil-mastermind Gru undertakes the greatest heist of all time: stealing the moon right out of the Earth’s sky! To accomplish this feat, Gru adopts three orphaned girls as his unwitting accomplices, but their kindness soon melts his icy heart and he begins doubting the importance of his single-minded goal to be the most diabolical thief that ever lived. Despicable Me introduced the world to the adorable minions, an endless array of diminutive yellow assistants who have since become an ubiquitous part of pop culture. Featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett and Kristen Wiig, Despicable Me was an instant classic and remains an audience favorite.

The Damned

Revolution Live

Cited as one of the most influential punk groups of all time, The Damned (Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Monty Oxymoron, Pinch, and Stu West) contributed vastly to the gothic rock genre and influenced an entire generation of future hardcore punk bands with their fast paced energetic playing style and attitude. Along with the Sex Pistols and The Clash, they helped spearhead the punk movement in the UK. Now, four decades and ten albums later and still on the road, they continue to wave the flag for originality, stick two fingers up to mediocrity and celebrate a punk ethos in the face of plastic entertainment and scripted reality. The Damned are planning to record a brand new album, their first since 2008’s So, Who’s Paranoid?, for release in 2017 and this tour will be in support of this new effort.
