Implied Interaction: Selected works from the CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection

Implied Interaction: The Role of Participant, Artist and Viewer  in selected works from the CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection

February 24 – July 17, 2016

A selection of nine works from the CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection, Implied Interaction explores the artists’ imprint on and/or interaction with a specific work. Whether implied or explicit, each artwork exemplifies how the viewer forms a lasting conversation to complete each piece. Artists represented in this exhibition are past winners of the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts that honors artists of Cuban descent, including Felipe Dulzaides, Coco Fusco, Guerra de la Paz, Jillian Mayer, Ana Mendieta, Gean Moreno, Ernesto Oroza and Ernesto de la Vega Pujol. The exhibition is a brief encounter with each artist’s esteemed practice and provides a glimpse into the depth of the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellows in Visual Arts.

Since 2011, the CINTAS Foundation has entrusted MDC’s Museum of Art + Design to serve as stewards of the CINTAS Fellows Collection, comprised of nearly 300 pieces by artists of Cuban descent living outside Cuba who have received prestigious CINTAS Fellowships, awarded since 1963.

The Hammer Trinity

The theatrical event of the year! The Hammer Trinity is a 3-plays-in-1-day epic theater experience! Join us for a day’s feast of story, tragedy and catharsis featuring over 20 actors, a 16-foot dragon, brilliant puppetry, model ships, stage combat and more!

The Hammer Trinity tells the story of young Casper Kent, who discovers he is the rightful heir to the Crown, recovers the lost Hammer, and defends it against pirates and the Crownless faction. Artistic Director Nathan Allen employs the epic format to create a multi-part, all-day theatrical adventure in the heroic, larger-than-life tradition of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones!

The Hammer Trinity is designed as the ultimate binge-watching experience as an epic saga told in three chapters that—for maximum impact—are best experienced as an all-day theatrical adventure. Performances are on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 1:00PM and ending at 10:00PM. That includes 7 acts, 6 ½  hours of play, and 2 ½  hours of breaks (including a dinner break). You won’t go more than 65 minutes without a chance to stretch your legs!

For your convenience, 3-chapters-in-one-day marathon tickets are on sale for each Saturday and Sunday through May 8. However, if you choose to split up your viewing experience into separate days, IT IS ESSENTIAL YOU SEE THE THREE CHAPTERS IN NUMERICAL ORDER: Chapter 1: The Iron Stag King, Chapter 2: The Crownless King, and Chapter 3: The Excelsior King.

New Times Seventh-Annual Brew At the Zoo

New Times Seventh-Annual Brew at the Zoo returns on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 to Zoo Miami! Brew at the Zoo is Miami’s largest beer festival showcasing 100-plus local, international and craft beers, live national acts, interactive games, animals, food and fun! Presale begins February 23rd 2016. Tickets go on sale February 29th 2016.

Beer connoisseurs will descend upon Zoo Miami to enjoy unlimited sampling of more than 100 of the world’s finest local and international beers, all while enjoying great burgers from Shake Shack and Greek eats by C & R Foods, which will offer classic lamb gyros, chicken oregano on pitas, Greek feta salad, souvlaki, meat on a stick (kebabs), chicken or steak quesadillas, arepas, Italian sausage, Philly cheesesteaks, and chicken, steak or veggie hot dogs, as well as water and sodas.

AD’s hit song “Mr.Wendal” brought much-needed attention to the plight of the homeless, and the band gave half of that single’s royalties to the National coalition of the homeless.

The beer tasting will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. All attendees will receive a lanyard and sampling cup courtesy of VaporFi.

There are three ticket choices available for purchase: VIP Experience, which includes entry to the event one hour early, at 7 p.m.; access to an exclusive VIP lounge featuring awardwinning food from Taste Zoo Miami Catering; Munchkins and coffee courtesy of Dunkin Donuts; a special meet-and-greet with creatures from Zoo Miami; full-pour beers from Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, and Leffe; an open bar featuring spirits; and much more. The Brewmaster ticket allows ticketholders entry an hour earlier than General Admission, at 7 p.m., and offers access to special Brewmaster-only exclusive craft beer pours from 7 to 8 p.m. General Admission allows entry to the event at 8 p.m. for unlimited beer sampling and the live musical performance.

THE FRONT BOTTOMS

What can we say about The Front Bottoms? We know we love them: a punk band that uses acoustic guitar, indie-rock dance grooves, Springsteen-y keyboard lines (this they might deny). It’s hook-filled… it’s anthemic… it’s confessional. Maybe Joni Mitchell by way of Green Day? They come to Revolution Live on May 10th…get your tickets here.

REFUSED + THE COAT HANGERS + PLAGUE VENDOR

Swedish rock band Refused wasn’t just ruminating about the lasting impact of popular culture when it began its 1998 album The Shape Of Punk To Come with a lyric about classics never going out of style — it was also taking stock of its own turbulent existence, which met an ignominious end. Indeed, Refused came and went before the true power of its music could be understood, even by its own members. Thankfully they have reunited and will be hitting the road to promote their newest release. The tour comes to Revolution Live on June 8th. Tickets are available online.

SET & SETTING + HIVELORDS + SHROUD EATER + ORBWEAVER + REAPERMANSER

SET & SETTING “If you’re going to listen to heavy post-rock like this, it’s best to do so on an overcast, gloomy day to get the full impact. While a good chunk of the Temporary Residence Limited roster mines these same peaks and valleys, Set and Setting’s debut LP, Equanimity, proves there’s still gold to be found out in those hills.” – DecibelMagazine.com https://www.facebook.com/setandsetting http://www.setandsettingband.com/

HIVELORDS “We are vignettes of psyche and chemical life spun by the darkness of another Mind; a subliminal infestation occupying sonic space. The vast horror of this field is a thirst never quenched; infinite Sisyphus idols moving planets on top of a grain of sand black. Nothing is not enough nothing. Those unfamiliar portals…the cruel chambers they must guard… A tendril of wild energy thrown from an endless loop; one coronal mass ejection spewing banal and awesome spheres. Knowing is lying. Be our truth.” https://www.facebook.com/HIVELORDS https://hivelords.bandcamp.com/

REAPERMANSER “Reapermanser is all about their fast, loud, obnoxious, relentless onslaught of heavy riffs, and explosive drumming. This vile concoction of sound mayhem is topped off with demonic screams of blasphemous satire of religion, sex, life and death.” https://www.facebook.com/Reapermanser http://reapermanser.weebly.com/

JAMES BAY

Multi-talented singer, guitarist and songwriter, James Bay comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 / 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, April 22nd at 10 AM. James Bay is a singular modern talent; an old head on young shoulders, a damn good guitar player and an even better songwriter.  A true soul singer, chasing “that goose bumps moment” by channeling artists such as Miles DavisBruce Springsteen and James Blake, his music is intensely personal. “I’m trying to keep things human and emotional,” he explains. “It’s hard to know what the balance is, but you know it when you hear it. It’s such a personal process that it’s hard to share stuff sometimes.” But share he does, casting a light onto his attempts to make sense of the world, and a young man’s discovery of love and loss. He is the very best kind of British vocalist, singer and songwriter grounded by melodic truth and raw emotion. “I’m trying to make songs that make people feel something and, if I’m lucky, even move them,” he explains.

GOV’T MULE

The legendary guitar driven jamband, Gov’t Mule comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater Sunday, September 25th, 2016 / 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, April 22nd at Noon.

Rock torchbearers Gov’t Mule are celebrating their 20th anniversary with an extensive tour and a series of dynamic live archival releases that highlight the group’s versatility and epic, fearless live performances. The deep chemistry and steely confidence shared by the quartet allow them to tackle any form of music and stamp it their own while remaining true to the spirit and intent of the original. This can of course be heard any time guitarist-singer Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis take the stage.  No two Gov’t Mule shows are alike, as the band draws on the more than 300 songs in their repertoire to create a unique experience each and every time. Their steadily expanding fan base knows that the Mulealways has something special waiting for them. Expect the unexpected.

TEGAN and SERA

Even as they’ve been embraced by the mainstream, Tegan and Sara consciously operate to the left of popular culture – their lyrical and social wisdom comes from an outside vantage looking in. Paradoxically, the essential message that underpins their worldview and identity is inclusion.  Their latest effort, Love You To Death, featuring the first single “Boyfriend,” will be released this June.  Pre sales for the show begin on April 29th, and can be purchased online.
