The founding force and career-long creative core of Failure consists of multi-instrumentalists Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards, a songwriting team practically unrivaled within the claustrophobic confines of post-grunge American rock. Failure was handed near-universal critical praise for their songwriting and sparse, yet cinematic musical arrangements. Their music certainly owed something to song-driven, moody artists like Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots, but Failure also had many melodic and thematic qualities that were unique and compelling. Failure was both grounded in a heavy breed of pure pop and ambitious experimentalism — the combination of which defies description just as it exudes an instant familiarity. It all amounted to a rare and sweet form of rock artistry.

Hum’s sonic universe is a solipsistic world that exists on its own terms, a maelstrom of sensations and colors, a thick metallic vortex of fuzztoned guitars with a silent core at the center like the eye of a hurricane – equal parts homegrown and high-tech. Hum serves up a cacophony of overlapping harmonics and dense shards of electric guitars providing a counterpoint to their tales of innocence corrupted and love lost, the past mourned, the theories of physics and relativity applied to modern-day relationships and contemporary attitudes. Hum takes you on an interior journey that encompasses the gnarled rhythms and magic melodies. Hum is all about turning space-time and its continuum upside down, rethinking rock & roll in a new light, turning emotions into a nuclear fission of colors, sounds, feedback and trance-n-dance.

AUTECHRE | Grand Central

SUNDAY | OCTOBER 11th | 8PM | 18+

Poplife & Grand Central present

Live – North America – 2015

Autechre are an English electronic music group consisting of Rob Brown and Sean Booth, both natives of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Formed in 1987, the duo are one of the most prominent acts signed with Warp Records, a label known for its pioneering electronic music and through which all Autechre albums have been released. While most associated with IDM (intelligent dance music), Booth and Brown are ambivalent in relating their sound to established genres. Their music has exhibited a gradual shift in aesthetic throughout their career, from their earlier work with clear roots in techno, electro and hip hop to later albums that are often considered more experimental in nature, featuring complex patterns of rhythm and subdued melodies. Oversteps, their most recent album, was released on February 22nd 2010.

Combinado Argentino De Danza

Argentina’s renegade collective of dancers, musicians, DJs, and theater artists create a singular and dynamic universe—where hip hop, contemporary and folklore engage and evolve in a constant state of conversation and transformation.

The Buenos Aires-based dance company created in 2011 has performed extensively throughout Argentina and internationally in Spain, Brazil and South Africa, where their artistic residency culminated with presentations on the streets of Johannesburg and Soweto. Under the direction of Andrea Servera, the collective’s philosophy is simple: “train, create and spread dance actions” for all spaces and formats, including the non-conventional. Big Freedia

As the “undisputed ambassador” of the energetic, New Orleans-based Bounce movement, Big Freedia isn’t afraid to twerk, wiggle, and shake her way to self-confidence, and is encouraging her fans to do the same. Big Freedia (pronounced “FREE-da”), is known as the Queen of Bounce (a subgenre of hip-hop born out of New Orleans and known for its call and response style and lightening speed booty-shaking dance). Performing five out of seven nights in any given week with dancers she calls The Divas, Big Freedia’s show is nothing short of dazzling. Though gay and proud, Big Freedia asserts that her (Freedia is a he but uses the feminine pronoun for her stage persona) sexuality has little to do with her music. “All Bounce is Bounce,” she insists. “There’s no need to separate it out. All types of people—gay, straight, rich, poor, black, white come to my shows. People just wanna get out and shake their azzzz and have a good time!” And therein lies the beauty of Big Freedia: She can rock a pair of dangling gold earrings and light up a blunt and chop it up with the hardest rapper around. She’s not a gay artist, but rather an artist who happens to be gay.

Poplife presents

Blasé Boys Club Tour

New album #OceanDrive is out now!

Adam Dyment, aka Duke Dumont, surfaced in 2006 with a buzzing, whip-cracking remix of Mekon’s “Yes Yes Y’All.” The London, England-based producer and DJ, inspired by “fidget house” figure Switch (M.I.A., Major Lazer), continued to increase his exposure through remixes for the likes of Late of the Pier (“Bathroom Gurgle”), Bat for Lashes (“Daniel”), and Lily Allen (“The Fear”) prior to releasing his first DJ mix album, Fabriclive 51, in 2010. Dyment continued to be in demand as a remix producer — in 2012 alone, he handled tracks by Bonobo, Santigold, and AlunaGeorge, among others — but he also produced a hit of his own in March 2013 with “Need U (100%).” Co-produced by Futtize and featuring vocals from A*M*E, the track, reminiscent of early-’90s crossover house, topped the U.K. pop chart. One year on, in March 2014, Dyment hit the U.K. number one spot once again, this time with the Whitney Houston-sampling track “I Got U.”
