Magpie Salute

Revolution Live

he Magpie Salute is an exciting new band that features musicians who have played together for decades throughout various projects and share a musical bond. The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame – guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien – alongside drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. The Magpie Salute marks the reunion of the Robinson and Ford guitar team which ended back in 1997 when Ford left The Black Crowes.  The band also boasts a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. The term “Magpie Salute” references a British superstition about the imperative to salute a Magpie anytime you see one in order to ward off negativity, or to have a good day. Clearly, The Magpie Salute intends to mix it up, breathing new life into musical bonds, rooted in tradition and the universal language of Rock and Roll.

Ibeyi with Special Guests: theMIND

North Beach Bandshell

From Paris to Cuba and all points in between, Ibeyi created a global sensation with their debut in 2015. How does one follow up on a groundbreaker?  The young artists immersed themselves in their Afro-Cuban roots, and collaborated with musical luminaries. They return to the US this fall, including a date Saturday October 28th at the North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach.

Ibeyi is 22-year-old French-Cuban twins Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz.  Since the release of their critically-acclaimed, self-titled debut album, Ibeyi have been captivating audiences across the globe with their unique blend of modern pop, hip-hop and electronic influenced with the traditional sounds of Yorùbá. At the end of 2016 the adoration of their debut album revealed itself through requests for the twins to open the Chanel Cruise fashion show in Cuba, an appearance in Beyoncé’s video for Lemonade, and Maura Bigonzetti’s  ‘Deep,’ a performance choreographed to music by Ibeyi for Alvin Ailey’s Dance Theatre

Band of Horses

Fillmore Miami Beach

Band of Horses is an American rock band formed in 2004 in Seattle by Ben Bridwell. The band has released five studio albums, the most successful of which is 2010’s Grammy-nominated Infinite Arms. The band’s lineup, which included Mat Brooke for the debut album, has undergone several changes; the most-recent lineup of Bridwell, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, Bill Reynolds, and Creighton Barrett, had been together for several years until Ramsey and Reynolds’ departure in 2017, recording three albums. Band of Horses’ fifth studio album, Why Are You OK, was released in June 2016.

Grizzly Bear

Fillmore Miami Beach

When Grizzly Bear came to the end of the road with their fourth album, 2012’s Shields, the future was unclear. No dramatic decisions were made, no arguments were had, but there was a feeling as there always is with the foursome that a breather was required. The band who emerged in 2004 in Brooklyn, New York, have forever functioned as a self-described “democracy”. It’s equal and it’s fair but it can also take a lot of out of them. And so they went their separate ways and bedded down in different corners.  But they couldn’t stay away.  The resulting fifth Grizzly Bear album Painted Ruins benefits from having the songs develop in a completely organic way.  That relief, that momentum, that sense of a band really relishing the chance to relocate their mojo is apparent on the album, which wound up taking two years to make.

POPTONE feat. Founding Members Daniel Ash & Kevin Haskins

Revolution Live

Singer-guitarist Daniel Ash and drummer Kevin Haskins — who spent large swaths of the ’80s and ’90s performing together in the seminal acts Bauhaus, Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets — have reunited to form a new band called Poptone, with Haskins’ daughter Diva, that will perform the music of those three classic acts on tour in the U.S.  Diva Dompe is a musician in her own right who previously played inBlackBlackHaskins and Ash, who have been DJing together of late, last played together, with Haskins’ brother David J and frontman Peter Murphy, during a Bauhaus reunion and in Love and Rockets, again with David J, in a later reunion. – Tickets on sale here: https://goo.gl/JnqFys

Clutch w/ Devin Townsend Project

Revolution Live

Clutch heads to Revolution Live, with support from the Devin Townsend Project & The Obsessed on Saturday, December 3rd

The eleventh Clutch studio album Psychic Warfare goes straight for the throat with “X- Ray Visions” and never lets go. Working again with acclaimed producer Machine, this time in Texas, the concise arrangements that made Earth Rocker so assertive is the same harness for the combustible musical energy on Psychic Warfare. Harder, faster… let the rhythm hit ’em.  Formed in 1991, the Maryland-based band’s ability to absorb different musical styles and fabricate them into a distinct Clutch sound continues to be their forté. “A Quick Death In Texas,”overstocked with signature “Clutch heavy” Tim Sult riffs and lonesome guitar licks, and the funk undercurrent of “Your Love Is Incarceration,” color Psychic Warfare with articulate musicality and comfortable familiarity. Neil Fallon: Vocals/ Guitar Jean-Paul Gaster: Drums Dan Maines: Bass Tim Sult: Guitar

GWAR at Revolution Live

Revolution Live

GWAR are thrash metal’s answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWARwere formed as an experiment in marketing strategy by several musicians, art students, and dancers. The group claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in Antarctica and initially created from the lowest filth in the universe, who came to Earth to sexually enslave and/or slaughter the human race. Taking the rock theatrics of Kiss and Alice Cooper to depraved new levels, GWAR has been putting on one of rock’s most outrageous and offensive–not to mention creative—live shows. The group quickly established a unique identity as the members performed in bizarre costumes made of latex and papier-mâché, while the stage show itself featured fake pagan rituals and corpses spewing washable bodily fluids on the audience. GWAR are perhaps best appreciated for their visual aspects, which have historically been far more creative than the actual music; indeed, the group received a somewhat stunning Grammy nomination in 1993 for its long-form home video Phallus in Wonderland. GWAR heads to Revolution Live on December 5. Tickets are on sale for $22.50 in advance, and $25 on the day of the show. Tickets on sale here: https://goo.gl/oEKquv

Reverend Horton Heat w/ The Blasters, Junior Brown, and more

Revolution Live

The Reverend Horton Heat is perhaps the most popular psychobilly artist of all time. The Reverend (as both the three-man band and its guitar-playing frontman were known) built a strong cult following through constant touring, manic showmanship, and a twisted sense of humor. The latter was nothing new in the world of psychobilly, of course, and Heat’s music certainly kept the trashy aesthetic of his spiritual forebears. The Reverend’s true innovation was updating the psychobilly sound for the alternative rock era. In his hands, it was something more than retro-obsessed kitsch — it had roaring distorted guitars, it rocked as hard as any punk band, and it didn’t look exclusively to pop culture of the past for its style or subject matter. Most of The Reverend’s lyrics were gonzo celebrations of sex, drugs, booze, and cars, and true to his name, his concerts often featured mock sermons in the style of a rural revivalist preacher. The Reverend makes his way to Revolution Live on December 21, with support from The Blasters, Junior Brown, and more. Black Rebel Motorcycle w/ Night Beats

Revolution Live

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club heads to Revolution Live, with support from Night Beats on Wednesday, January 24.

For 15 years, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has carried the torch for true rock and roll. The latest edition of the firebrand rock troupe, sees them at their most dynamic. Their sixth studio album, Specter at the Feast, ventures into diverse sonic territory, delivering their most ambitious offering yet. It’s an album of impossible dichotomies; opposing sounds amalgamate into a seamless, entirely coherent package, that rumbles with driving rhythms, and soars with skyward-arcing guitar howls. Robert Been delivers growling bass grooves on “Hate the Taste,” and Peter Hayes’ guitar wails on what may be their most hard-rocking song, “Rival.” Counterbalancing these frenetic outbursts are moments of star-gazing ambient textures, like the crystalline harmonics introducing the slinking album opener, “Fire Walker,” and the organ drones of “Returning.” There are moments of down-home blues paired alongside flailing punk bombasticism; gnarled dark rock shores upon uplifting, and optimistic anthems. Taking cues from all points of the band’s many years on the road, this record is the band’s most well-realized album to date.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

Revolution Live

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark head to Revolution Live on Saturday, April 14.

Featuring the core members Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey, the Liverpudlian synth pop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released its first single, “Electricity,” on Factory Records; the record led to a contract with the Virgin subsidiary DinDisc. In 1980, the group released its self-titled debut album. It was followed by Organisation, which featured the U.K. Top Ten single “Enola Gay.” The band’s next few albums — Architecture & Morality, Dazzle Ships, and Junk Culture  — found the band experimenting with its sound, resulting in several U.K. hit singles. Crush, their most pop-oriented album, found more success in America than in Britain as the single “So in Love” hit number 26 on the charts. “If You Leave,” taken from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, was their biggest American hit, climbing to number four. After a hiatus a full-blown reunion came in 2006, including both McCluskey and Humphreys. They dabbled in a few more projects and as soon as they were off the road they began writing songs for another album. Taking its name, and some inspiration, from Italian divisionist/symbolist painterGiovanni Segantini’s work titled The Punishment of Luxury, the band’s 13th album was made by the duo of McCluskey and Humphreys and released by White Noise Records in September of 2017.
