    This Just In: Interplanetary Melodies

    by Emile

Soooooo… this week I won’t be talking about any new releases in particular. Instead I want to tell you about an event happening at Gramps – The Sun Ra 100th Birthday Celebration! We sell a ton of Sun Ra records at Sweat, which makes sense because Sun Ra made a ton of records. At over 100 albums, his is actually one of the largest discographies in music history. He was a true lo-fi and DIY pioneer, getting his work out there without dependence on the financial backing or resources of a label. And at over 100 albums, he was obviously doing many things right.

To honor the legend that is Sun Ra, local artist/archivist/collector/DJ/biggest Sun Ra fan I know, Kevin Arrow, has organized an interactive celebration this Thursday, May 22nd: “DJ Waterbed Kev aka Alter-Destiny aka Cosmo Approach aka DJ Abstract Eye will lay it down to honor the cosmic captain. There will be visual accompaniments. Please bring a musical instrument such as Drum or Drum Machine, Saxophone, Tuba, Maraca or Whistle to make some noise at the appropriate time. Later that night the Joyful Noise continues with the Wiggins (Houston) and Snakehole (Miami)!

I hope to see you all there! And yes, you still get an updated in-stock list below…
