This Just In: Boy

Carla Bozulich – Boy LP:
The first time I saw Carla Bozulich perform was opening for Wilco in 2004. They were touring in support of A Ghost Is Born, their first record featuring the legendary Nels Cline on guitar. Researching things after the fact, Bozulich, whose live “interpretations” of Willie Nelson songs captivated some and rubbed others wrong, didn’t seem a strange choice after all. Cline and Bozulich had written and recorded together as Scarnella, and The Nels Cline Singers provided much of the backing to the Bozulich’s Red Headed Stranger album. With further research I learned Bozulich had a varied musical/performance past, dating back to 1982. Many people knew her best from 90’s alt-whatever group The Geraldine Fibbers. I certainly had a lot to catch up on.

About a year-and-a-half later, she toured with A Silver Mt. Zion (not sure which iteration of the name they were on then). I saw her play at a small club and the performance was very different than the last. It was a brash, writhing, cathartic revelation. And again, the audience was split. Half left the room and the rest were on the floor with Carla as she ominously sang with and to us in a memorable rendition of Evangelista album track “Baby, That’s The Creeps.” I can still feel that moment and think of it often. I listened to Evangelista hundreds of times and showed it to friends who I thought would “get it.”

Subsequent to the solo album, “Evangelista” became Bozulich’s new group outfit moniker and spawned a run of three incredible albums between 2008-2011. They toured relentlessly, and luckily I got to see many more performances. In record stores, punk house basements and proper venues, it was always real and relentless… playing to 5 people or 500 like she was possessed. Some of us were too.

So, about 8 years after Evengelista, Carla Bozulich has a new solo album, Boy, out on Constellation Records. It’s been referred to as a “pop” record, but that’s mainly in the sense that these songs have more definite structures than previous material and clock in under 4 minutes. I’m a pessimist and always expect my musical heroes to disappoint me. Carla still hasn’t. Boy is as splendid, well-written and real as anything she’s done. But hey, I’m already a fan. Check out “Deeper Than The Well” and “Lazy Crossbones” and decide for yourself.

  1. So much going on in such small spaces here. So many textures but so much emotion. The songs go from a very dark huddled place — the hole to crawl in — to a brighter place. I love having her music as an earworm. Always interesting and these songs are like candy to me.
