This Just In: Something Cold

Detroit-based minimal-synth, coldwave, post-punk and industrial/noise label Something Cold just dropped two essential records for synth-heads. There’s a limited reissue of their inaugural 2012 release, V/A – Something Cold, and the debut album from Florida-based sci-fi synth purists Os Ovni. Check out descriptions and images of both below, as well as the list of our weekly stock.

Various – Something Cold LP:
“Something Cold was formed by Justin Carver in 2009, as an ongoing live showcase for minimal-synth, coldwave and industrial sounds in Detroit. With an ever rotating selection of guest DJs and venues, Something Cold continues to bring strange sounds to Detroit, including notable live performances from Crash Course in Science, Salem, White Car, Martial Canterel, LA Vampires, ITAL, Blank Dogs, Mueran Humanos, Zola Jesus, and Innergaze. Something Cold now brings these mysterious frozen sounds to your turntable via this brand new vinyl imprint.

Detroit is a city like no other: a bleak, post-industrial wasteland consumes most of the landscape. These ruins breathe a lot of creativity into the artists who immerse themselves in it — the revolutionary sounds of Detroit Techno have proved that to the world. There is very little techno in the sound of Something Cold though, instead a decayed sound that perhaps more accurately depicts the soundtrack of the city’s rustbelt.

This compilation release showcases acts who have performed at Something Cold over the years, as well as friends and allies who are no strangers to the Something Cold dance floor. Tracks by local artists Autumus, Deastro, Especially Good, YOU., and Ze Dark Park reveal the sound of decadent nightlife easily found inside the empty corridors of Detroit. Meanwhile, North America’s minimal DIY synth explosion is represented by bands from east coast to west, both well-known and completely unheard of: The Present Moment, Further Reductions, OS OVNI, and Subtitles. Each selection on this LP documents the sound of the coldest and most confusing social club of Detroit; this is Something Cold.”

Os Ovni – Let’s Leave Reality LP:
Let’s Leave Reality is the debut LP from Florida’s intergalactic synth duo, Os Ovni. Having performed together for 15 years under various experimental electronic projects, Logan Owlbeemoth and Omebi Velouria formed Os Ovni (Portuguese for The UFO) in 2010 while living in Austin, TX. With two 7” and 12” releases and an appearance on the Something Cold various artist LP behind them, the vortex they navigate with us continues to grow.

Let’s Leave Reality features eight tracks of experimental electronic pop lost in time and space. The psychedelic harmonies and colliding layers of synths paint a vision of a future that isn’t so much bleak as it is paranoid. Hyper-paced drum machines buzz under the shimmering structure of the synths. Logan and Omebi’s vocals stir in perfect harmony glazed with lost celluloid inspired visions. Production of Let’s Leave Reality was overseen by Matt Weiner of Atlanta’s synth-wave duo Featureless Ghost. The LP cover art was designed by Belgium designers, OOh. The release is limited to 500 vinyl copies (200 on white vinyl).

Os Ovni also command the video art machine company, Tachyons+, where they make unique video FX devices for artists all over the world — including a forthcoming video for electronic legend, Gary Numan. Let’s Leave Reality is a transmission that could have only resonated from somewhere as extraterrestrial as Florida. Os Ovni has continued to teach us how to escape reality, and explore our dreams. They might not have come from outer space to save the human race, rather leave our thoughts abducted in haze of analogue oscillations and fragile pop melodies.”
