This Just In: Rubber ‘N Wax

    posted by Emile

This week we’ve got all sorts of new wax for your listening pleasure and cleverly manipulated rubber to get your bike stylin’. The construction’s been stickin’ it to us, so if we’ve got something you’re interested in, come pick it up and support us during this rough time. Our used section is also constantly rotating with excellent selections of damn near every type of sound you can imagine.

Cola Freaks – Cola Freaks LP:
“Denmark’s COLA FREAKS sound like a scheduled, perfectly executed panic attack, employing herky-jerky song structures and frequent direction changes while commanding total attention. The six-piece has released a series of impressive singles for which they’ve garnered comparisons to legendary European KBD-era bands of yore and the likes of Jay Reatard—indeed, Mr. Reatard recruited Cola Freaks members for his backing band in his final live lineup.” -Douchemaster

Mister Heavenly – Out Of Love LP*/CD:
“Mister Heavenly is… comprised of indie rock veterans Nick Thorburn (Islands/The Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse)… Mister Heavenly is… at the forefront of ‘doom wop,’ which is a state of mind rather than a nitpicky micro-genre. It is born from a shared love of 1950s vocal-based R&B classics by ensembles like the Penguins, the Platters, and the Moonglows, and also a fascination with ill-fated romance… Mister Heavenly is… very excited by the prospect of their music being used in a big-screen, teen romantic comedy, which seems appropriate for a band that describes their music as ‘post-apocalyptic Valley Girl meets the American Graffiti soundtrack.’” –Sub Pop

*Did you know that many of our new Sup Pop titles are “Loser Editions” only available online and at certain stores? Look for the “Loser Edition” seal on new releases for your chance to own a special, first-run color copy!

    Cyclus Accessories:
We’ve got all four components from the “Classic Collection” of bike accessories by Cyclus. Made from recycled Colombian truck tires, each component of the collection provides sustainable, stylish storage for cyclists. Each piece is durable, weather-resistant and fits most bikes.

Oh, and then there’s all this other amazingness…

Download the song for free here, film yourself/your friends/your mom cutting a rug to the song, and then post a link to the clip in the comments below.  As a reminder, they’re more interested in your dance moves than your video’s production values.

    This Just In: Splitsville

    posted by Emile

As usual, we’ve got some excellent stuff in this week. This batch contains quite a few split releases – yay for collaboration! If you’re looking for wearable sound-related swag, we’ve also got some snazzy new shirts from Floridas Dying and Bleeding Palm. They’re available in the shop or via the wesbstore if you’re long-distance.

    Foot Village/Super Khoumeissa – Split Series #21 12”:
“Ultimate team up between LA noise mongers Foot Village and Mali’s masters of Takamba, Super Khoumeissa. This is Super Khoumeissa’s first official recorded work to date and some Foot Village’s tastiest destructo jams! Good time fun for everyone!” Individually distressed and numbered packaging from FatCat.

    Wet Nurse/Lazy Boyzzz – Wet ‘N Lazy Split 7”:
Self-produced, self-released Split 7″ from two of Orlando’s up and coming punk bands. Lazy Boyzzz offer three tracks of crude sloppy punk, and the all-girl Wet Nurse offers three tracks of poppy dual female vocal punk. Art by Ben Lyon. Comes with download code.

    Bitches/Yuppies – Split 12”:
“The second limited 12” split from the Palmist label features two young bands both originating from their own respective DIY scenes, who together deliver an intense and gripping record that barely lets up over its 30 minutes+ running time. Whilst both bands have an interest in what could loosely be described as the tradition of punk music, they explore this in very different ways; BITCHES’ tightly wound interlocking rhythms contrasting perfectly with the sloppy spontaneity of Yuppies’ 8-track recordings.”

    Other new/new-ish stuff and restocks:
    Animal Collective – Sung Tongs 180g 2LP
    Arrange – Plantation LP
    Botany – Feeling Today 12”
Cop City Chill Pillars – Held Hostage On Planet Chill LP
Electric Bunnies – Through The Magical Door LP
Gardens & Villa – Gardens & Villa LP
Lil Daggers – Lil Daggers LP
Midnite Snaxxx – Guy Like That 7”
Modest Mouse – Sad Sappy Sucker LP; The Fruit That Ate Itself LP
Moonface – Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped LP
Personal & The Pizzas – Dead Meat 7”
Sleaze – Called You Once 7”
    U.S. Girls/Slim Twig – Split 12”

Proper Dubstep at The Vagabond With London Producer SILKIE

    posted by Jsin

SILKIE is a a front-line soldier in the struggle to continually push dubstep forward. Far from the overbearing commercial version that’s gained worldwide popularity, his style is built on smooth, jazzy basslines that make you want to dance. The West Londoner’s reputation as a DJ is only exceeded by his production skill found on the now-classic debut album, and the recent follow-up City Limits Volume 2, which features GET LOW alumni, Truth. Both albums have been released by Mala‘s DEEP MEDi label, and I suggest you grab them! On Thursday, August 25th the man makes Miami debut at The Vagabond for GET LOW, (((SHAKE)))‘s monthly bass jam, don’t slip.

GET LOW Resident JUAN BASSHEAD (go like his new page and the BassHead Music page) recently returned from Silkie’s home town where they caused a ruckus at spots like Fabric, Sub.FM, and Get Darker (see video below at 1:52) with MC JUMANJI, who’s new track with Chefal was dropped on Rinse FM. Epic achievements for Miami Dubstep abroad!

Rounding out the main room lineup is MC NOME, METHODUS, GRAY GHOST and OMEN PHAZE, who will be performing with his group DEAD ACROBATS for part of the set. NEVER YAWN (JCTM + YEEUQEE) will be throwing down on the Patio for JCTM’s Birthday with LORRAINE SANGRE and THE GET. NEVER YAWN put together a sick GET LOW mix of dubstep, moombahton and sexy bass sounds for you to enjoy. Of course the (((SHAKE))) residents A-TRAIN & ROB RIGGS will be doing their thing in the bar like every Thursday. Get ready for night packed with talent of all flavors… come taste the bass.

YOUNG CIRCLES Celebrate Their Jungle Habits

    posted by Jsin

They rocked Fridays at The Vagabond as Stonefox, then as Blond Fuzz, and once more in their current incarnation YOUNG CIRCLES this past January. Read all about the transformation in this County Grind interview. They perfected their new sound, had MTV praise it, and very soon their debut full-length, Jungle Habits will drop. To celebrate, we’re bringing them back for another of their exciting live shows this Friday, August 19th. Jungle Habits will be released August 23rd and you can get it at Sweat!

You might have caught ANDREW WARD slaying the room at Boomting, or Sundays in the back room of Purdy Lounge. Catch him in the main room this week taking over the dance floor after Young Circles performs. He joins our resident DJs RAY MILIAN, LOLO, RYDON, UVS, CARMEL OPHIR, and AGENT ROSE in bringing you the best Friday night vibes. There’s no cover before 11pm, and you can fill up on $1 Stella drafts while you wait for the action. See you there.

Time Again for Drum and Bass

    posted by Jsin

The Vagabond’s first big Drum and Bass event was also it’s last, but we’re about to fix that. Goldie & Friends’ Blue Note Sessions went down massive to close out Ultra week this year. The whole show was recorded live and you can download sets from Metalheadz greats here. The UK half of BassHead Music, A SIDES, was on that bill, and he’ll be returning for another round on the Funktion-One sound system this Thursday. He’s joined by 3-deck destroyer ALPHAXERO, dubstep prodigy ANIMAL KRACKERZ and MC JUMANJI; all from his label. We also have a set by one of Miami’s biggest DNB talents, WILL MILES and his MC SOPH EYE. Resident DJs A-TRAIN & ROB RIGGS make it (((SHAKE))) in the Bar, while SLIM BISCAYNE, JOSE BLUE JEANS and TROPIC (NYC) rockin’ on the Patio.

For the love of bass we’re giving you FREE admission to this show before 11pm! All you have to do is send your names to SHAKE305@gmail.com and get there early! #DoYourJob
