(((SHAKE))) Gets Low With Miami Dubstep This Thursday

    posted by Jsin

Every week we’re asked when there’s going to be dubstep at (((SHAKE))), and here’s your answer! This Thursday, July 28th GET LOW returns to The Vagabond, fully rested from our big 2 Year Anniversary celebration with Plastician. Admission is FREE before Midnight with RSVP to shake305@gmail.com, so go get it! This edition features a spectacular local lineup headlined by our Resident DJ JUAN BASSHEAD with our MCs JUMANJI & NOME. SOMEJERK is coming through with Moombahton flavor that should go something like this…

Young guns Bats and Animal Krackerz have been working on a lot of music together, so they’ll be doing a back-to-back set to open up the night on Thursday. Here’s a free download of a track they remixed as BATS & AMKZ

RACKUP & PINION make their GET LOW debut closing out the night. Outside on the Patio we welcome our friends at DOWN to take over the Patio while they look for a new home. They feature the deeper side of bass music with sets by GOODDROID, GRAY GHOST, MAGOULA + TWO WAY. (((SHAKE))) Residents A-TRAIN & ROB RIGGS drop hip hop in the Bar Room for everyone who keeps it classic. Arrive early to beat the line and get $1 Colt 45 Tallboys from 10-11pm and $5 Cuba Libres all night long. The Vagabond is located at 30 NE 14th Street in downtown Miami. Do your job.

PLAINS Perform Live for Their Album Release Party Tonight

    posted by Jsin

Tonight at Fridays at The Vagabond we are very excited to present the official album release show for Miami indie rockers PLAINS. Hopefully you’ve heard of them by now, but if not check out their nod for Best Supergroup, another great article on Beached Miami, and read the New Times‘ review of the album where you can also stream the whole thing. It’s a killer album, highly recommended for fans of the Pixies, GBV, etc. We’ve got their 13-track self-titled debut right now at Sweat, and you can also pick it up tonight at the show.

PLAINS – “Innovator” from 10K Islands on Vimeo.

In addition to the live music, our amazing Resident DJs will fill 3 rooms with the best sounds in town. Arrive early if you’re looking to drink on the cheap! Doors are at 10 and you can get $1 Stella Drafts until 11pm, then $3 PBR Tallboys til Midnight, and $5 shot specials after that! Come out!

    Un1-Verse Data Bands on Deck

    posted by Jsin

Last Thursday’s (((SHAKE))) (come through tonight!) was full of rad! When my old ass needed a break from dancing to A-TRAIN & ROB RIGGS, I snuck over to the Rock of Ages set, grabbed a handful of Twizzlers from craft services, and watched some big movie magic being made in Miami. To make it better, the homies from Metro Zu slid through The Vagabond and blessed me with the super swag Data Bands their label Un1-Verse just put out! Each bracelet is filled with 4 gigabytes of music, art, video and literature from label artists Metro Zu, Shuttle Life, Lowercase, Kidd Lucid, freebase!, Ruben Slikk, and Village South. Get yours online, or at Sweat this Saturday when Metro Zu plays live with Shuttle Life, ARK IX and CHALK.

Next week at (((SHAKE))) will be great too, as it’s time again for GET LOW! I wrote a piece on the new Tropicult blog where I discuss Miami’s bass music culture, including GET LOW, Miami Dubstep, and some of the great artists mentioned above. Take a look, leave a comment, and share it if you like. See you out.

Melvin Van Peebles with his band!

This Just In: Local & Abroad

    posted by Emile

There are some great new local releases in this week, as well as a diverse array of other sounds from all over the place.

    PLAINS – PLAINS CD:
After releasing the excellent Innovator 7″on Discosoma Records about a year ago, Plains’ highly anticipated full-length debut is finally available! Beached Miami had some wonderful things to say, calling it “a rare combination of technical savvy, good taste, and talent — the humble trinity that early indie rock, post-punk, and grunge-era bands all thrived on… PLAINS is the rare record sans a skippable song, a collection of intelligent rock… a collection of songs that sound checks many while mimicking none. If PLAINS were released at any point in [Michael] McGinnis’s career, it would be a major achievement. As a debut, it is astonishing.”

The Wonderful Sound Of Induce! – “Pretty” b/w “Downtown Saturday Night” 12″:
“If you like that retro disco type of sound mixed with a little bit of a modern twist, then you’re going to love The Wonderful Sound Of Induce. This release is taken from the upcoming album Halfway Between Me And You, the new single ‘Pretty’ b/w ‘Get Down Saturday Night’ has already become a favorite of fans and friends alike… ‘Pretty’ is an uptempo Boogie jam that sounds like the song Prince never made. While ‘Get Down Saturday Night,’ produced by longtime friend and collaborator, Manuvers, is a cover of the underground Disco classic originally performed by Oliver Cheatham and more recently popularized by the hands of Daft Punk.” -The305.com

Black Milk & Jack White -”Brain” b/w “Royal Mega” 7″:
“Third Man Records is proud to announce their first hip hop release as none other than the inimitable Black Milk. Recorded at Third Man Studio in Nashville and co-produced by Black Milk and Jack White, these two songs feature Milk’s deadly live band accented by the finest of Nashville’s horn musicians for a truly unique and impressive outing. Out of Detroit, Black Milk is one the most vital hip hop artists around. More than just an MC, Milk is brilliant producer who’s worked with hip hop notables from J Dilla, Slum Village, and Lloyd Banks to his recent collaborative work with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson in Random Axe. ‘Brain’ and ‘Royal Mega’ are funk and soul imbibed slices of classic skull snappin hip hop.”

This Just In: Ice Cream, Candy & Cassettes

    posted by Emile

We can’t think of a better way to spend this weekend than enjoying sugar and wax…

Animal Tropical / Ice Cream – Just Between Us Girls Split 10”
“Hot off the presses is the self-released vinyl debut of Miami music veterans Animal Tropical and up-and-comers Ice Cream… The current direction of both bands is captured to the fullest extent, as is their complementary relationship: Ice Cream’s kooky/spooky psych-pop provides a straightforward reprieve from Animal Tropical’s wild ride of an A-side, which features vocalist Jose Castello as el capitán at the helm of a manic potpourri of instruments, voices, and overdubs.” –Matt Preira, Miami New Times

    Arrange – Plantation CS:
    * We’ve been getting lots of calls about this one – it will sell out!

“Arrange is the work of one Malcom Lacey of Florida who’s been quietly dishing out free releases for a bit. You needn’t look far to find many accolades being showered on this new album including Pitchfork’s review of track ‘When’d You Find Me ?’ which they describe as ‘Patient and quietly stunning.’ Much of it is patient and evolving but there’s also plenty of R&B jammers in there and some nice voice and piano led pieces too. It’s a remarkably confident and well designed debut from a new talent full of promise. Good new music like this deserves to be heard on the warm and pleasing analog greatness of cassette. As usual this one is pro dubbed on hi bias chrome tapes. The artwork was handled by awesome collage maestro Jesse Treece.” –Alchemist Records

New Candy – SNAP! and Cleo’s Peanut Butter Cups:
The awesome confectioners at Go Max Go have two new vegan creations to delight your sweet tooth. SNAP! is their take on a Crunch Bar, and Cleo’s are like Reese’s Cups. Both are just as good (or dare we say better?) than the originals. Stop in to try one, or both. We also have the rest of the line of Go Max Go treats – the vegan answer to all your favorite candy bars.

And of course, more new and restocked records:
24-Carat Black – Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday LP
Annette Poindexter – “Mama” b/w “Wayward Dream” 7”
    Battles – Mirrored 2LP
Brian Eno – Drums Between The Bells 2LP
Charles Bradley – No Time For Dreaming LP
Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music 2LP
    M.A.S.O. – Poon Tang Thump Pt. 1&2 7”
    Prurient – Bermuda Drain LP
Psychic Mirrors – Mystic Hustle 7″
Sidney Pinchback & The Schiller Street Gang – “Soul Strokes” b/w “Remind Me” 7”
    Stormy – “The Devastator” b/w “I Won’t Stop To Cry” 7”
    Telescopes – Taste LP
This Heart Electric – Polar 7″
Various  – Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label 2LP
Various – Eccentric Soul: The Big Mack Label LP
Various – Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label 2LP
Various – Local Customs: Downriver Revival 2LP+DVD
