    This Just In: Tasty Sounds

    posted by Emile

Music’s running rampant in the city this week(end) and we’ve got more tasty sounds you should hear!

    James Blake – ST CD:
“Composed of tender torch songs, elegiac drifters, and soulful melodies, Blake’s first puts him in the rare company of fellow singers– Thom Yorke, Karin Dreijer, Antony Hegarty, Justin Vernon, Dan Bejar– who’ve recently bent their own lavish voices, not samples, to make interesting pop music shaped with electronics. These songs are bigger than the defense of any microgenre, and, chances are, they’ll soon make Blake a star. He deserves it.” -Pitchfork

Beady Eye – Different Gear, Still Speeding 180g 2LP:
What do you get when a Noel Gallagher quits Oasis? You get Beady Eye. Their self-released debut has been described as more similar to Oasis than the last few Oasis albums were – definitely something to check out if you’re a fan. As an added bonus, Andy Bell is on guitar duties here instead of bass!

Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes LP and CD:
Sophomore release from the elusive Swedish singer whose debut, Youth Novels (2008), left listeners buzzing about what she’d do next. Moving away from electro-pop, on Wounded Rhymes, Lykke Li’s vocals approach soul, R&B, gospel and even doo-wop with challenging, subtle idiosyncrasies. With just the right amount of melancholy and soulful intent, these may be the songs that distinguish her beyond mere “buzz”.

Other new additions to make ears happy:
    Devotchka – 100 Lovers LP/CD and CD
    Lupe Fiasco – Lasers 2LP
Jonny Greenwood – Norwegian Wood OST CD
Hillstomp – Darker The Night CD
Memphis (Torquil Campbell of Stars) – Here Comes A City CD
    Pleasure – Greatest Hits CD
    The Strokes – Angles CD
Various Artists – Motown Number 1’s CD
Plus restocks on Dirty Protectors, Fitz & The Tantrums, Toro Y Moi, Mayer Hawthorne, Torche and all Iggy Pop/Stooges albums!

    Wanna See Some PRETTY LIGHTS?

    posted by Lolo

Not just that, you’ll be hearing some pretty sounds too! We’re giving you a chance to win tickets to catch PRETTY LIGHTS at the Fillmore this Thursday courtesy of our friends at Live Nation. Last time he came down he played Vagabond to a packed house dancing crazily to his electro mashup party jams.

PRETTY LIGHTS is the project of Colorado producer Derek Vincent Smith, complete with live drummer Adam Deitch, and (of course) a serious light show that should be intensified exponentially for this venue. Enter by commenting below with a valid email address and we’ll pick a winner Wednesday morning at 10am and announce the next giveaway.  Good luck!
