Besides music and vinyl, another thing we love around here is delicious vegan food! We’ve got a couple of great events coming up where we’re all gonna chow down. Read on…
This Saturday, February 26th is the fifteenth Pure Imagination Live. If you still somehow haven’t heard the enchanting stores of PI, download some episodes for free or subscribe to the free podcast by looking up “Pure Imagination” on iTunes. The stories, with live improvised music accompaniment, start at 9 but come earlier at 7pm for a vegan potluck dinner! The last few have been sumptuous with people bringing in all sorts of great dishes.

This Sunday is another fantabulous WAFFLE PARTY! We’re slowly but surely building an army of waffle fanatics who are making Sunday waffle brunch at Sweat a new tradition. As always it goes from noon to 3pm and $6 will get you a huge made-to-order vegan Belgian waffle and whatever you like from our topping bar. Coffee and OJ and hot chocolate available too!

Looking ahead a little we’ve got a special event of interest to all local animal lovers. On Tuesday, March 8th vegan veterinarian Armaiti May, DVM (Los Angeles) is traveling the country giving talks about animal rights activism, veterinary medicine, and will also be able to answer common questions about caring for your pets. There’s a vegan potluck starting at 7pm and the talk is at 8:30pm. Thanks to Emerge, EarthSave and ARFF for helping out with this one!

PUNCHES is the Brooklyn-based late night disco project of twin brothers Greg and Darin Bresnitz, aka DJ duo Finger on the Pulse, as well as the producers of awesome IFC music-meets-food show Dinner With The Band. They’re joined by nightlife pioneer Alan Astor, who got crowds up and dancing with his 2005 solo hit “Fantastic Fantasy.”
This Friday at The Vagabond, Punches take the stage in the main room at midnight! AND, we’re bringing back $1 Stella drafts from 10 to 11 so arrive early to take advantage. The Friday night residents will keep the party hopping into the wee hours. No dress code, no drama at the door, and great food from Mo’s grill in the back patio. Come as you are…

Well hellooo there all you lounge lizards, mods, hipsters (the old school kind), tikiphiles, swanksters and jetsetters! The first ever MOD MIAMI weekend is happening right in our ‘hood from March 3rd through 6th!
It’s a full 4-day festival celebrating Mid-Century/Atomic/Space Age style, music and fashion. There are architecture tours, art shows, mod vendors and vintage trunk shows, sexy retro showgirls, and of course parties galore, with musical performances by URSULA 1000, The Superions (featuring Fred Schneider from the B-52′s) and a boatload of others.
The full schedule of events is available here and a variety of tickets and weekend passes are available for very reasonable prices. If you go for the “Jetsetter All-Access Pass” you can check out yours truly spinning a special set of J-pop, tiki tunes, bossa, and global fantasy pop (some personal favorites) at the Thursday Night Welcome Party at the New Yorker Boutique Hotel on Biscayne and 65th.
Either way, get your best Mad Men-esque attire ready and come get swanky!

TREMENDOUS batch of new releases and restocks in at Ye Olde Record Shoppe.
Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record LP

“The endlessly creative and surprisingly fluid Forgiveness Rock Record dispels any notion of opportunism by sticking to what the group does best: crafting clever, ramshackle, occasionally soaring bedroom pop songs (listen close for sirens) in a big expensive studio. Bolstered by a handful of evenly spaced, arena-sized rockers like “World Sick,” “Forced to Love,” “Ungrateful Little Father,” and “Water in Hell,” the remaining ten tracks flip through genres like a picture book, pausing only to pencil in the occasional instrumental, one of which (“Meet Me in the Basement,” with its huge strings and “guitarmonies”) elicits bigger goose bumps than some of the singalongs.” – allmusic
Deerhoof – Deerhoof VS. Evil LP

“The musical equivalent of hormones raging out of control, it explodes out of the speakers with its gawky triumph and inflamed sentimentality. These are songs that practically demand that you dance and sing along (however elastic the rhythms, or abrupt the melodies). To document their musical “coming-of-age” the band members could only trust themselves. Besides their cover of an obscure Greek film soundtrack instrumental (“Let’s Dance the Jet”), and a song done for NY artist Adam Pendleton’s documentary film installation BAND (“I Did Crimes for You”), these songs were completely self-recorded, mixed and mastered in practice spaces and basements with no engineers or outside input.” – Polyvinyl
Way, way, WAY more music after the jump.
