    WEDNESDAY: Erick Lyle (Scam Zine)

posted by Matt P (Roofless Rex)

This Wednesday (12/22/10), Sweat hosts journalist/author/zine-ster Erick Lyle for a special in-store reading from his new anthology SCAM: The First Four Issues. The reading begins at 8PM and in lieu of a cover charge we’ll be passing a donation hat to help Erick with travel costs. Facebook RSVP

In the mid-90s, Lyle was an integral member of the South Florida punk scene, regularly performing at Churchill’s and Everglades generator shows with his band Chickenhead. His greatest contribution to the scene was the excellent (and still running!) fanzine, SCAM. From the early days of pranks and punk degeneracy, through his highly literate musings on squatting in Coconut Grove, up to his contemporary activist-journalist writings on social justice issues, SCAM is an absolutely essential document of punk and anarchism in North America.

Lyle is also a frequent contributor to the San Francisco Bay Guardian and countless punk zines, including Maximum Rock N Roll; and Error, edited by Sam McPheeters. He has written and performed several pieces for NPR’s This American Life.

    Calling All Poets and Masterminds…

    posted by Lolo

Hey Sweat fans, here are two cool opportunities we thought you might like to know about.  Read on…

Next April is going to be the first O, Miami - a month-long, city-wide poetry festival!  Their goal is to expose each and every denizen of South Florida to a poem at some point during the month.  Right now they’re taking the first-ever Miami Poet Census so if you dabble in verse or fill up notebooks, click that link to add your name.

“The publication of individual poems or collections of poems is NOT a requirement to be included. All languages, styles, and levels of experience are welcome. Anyone who writes poetry and identifies as a poet is encouraged to sign up and be counted.”

The Miami New Times is also accepting submissions for their latest round of Mastermind Awards.  You have until January 7th, 2011 to apply for FREE MONEY to the tune of $1,500 to further your creative career.  The three categories are visual, narrative and sound so nearly all of you should be eligible in some way…  Full info is available here, best of luck to all!

    Brian Butler Keeps It Real

posted by Matt P (Roofless Rex)

Brian Butler is one of the coolest dudes we know (for example, he was recently married on a mini-golf course). You’ve definitely seen his work via numerous flyers for Sweat and Roofless, all under The Upper Hand Art Dot Com banner. Mr. Butler’s style is a sharp mashup of imaginative psychedelia, comic book charm and serious design chops.

Bring Toys For Charity To Zeds Dead’s Miami Debut

    posted by Jsin

We’re proud to announce (((SHAKE))) will be helping the CRA and Miami City Commissioners collect toys for underprivileged children throughout the city this holiday season. You can do your part by bringing an unwrapped toy to The Vagabond this Thursday. Besides being an awesome person for caring about Miami’s youth, your good deeds will be rewarded with a signed/limited edition print by local street art star AHOL SNIFFS GLUE, which you can see below.

Once you’re within the confines of The Vagabond, get ready to experience Miami’s Best Monthly Party, GET LOW! It’s the 20th show, and we’re bringing you another Miami first (like Borgore, Joker, Datsik, etc.) with Canadian dubstep duo, ZEDS DEAD. Alongside our Resident DJ JUAN BASSHEAD and MCs JUMANJI + THE NOME we also have SOMEJERK returning with an opening set of post-everything electronic tunes similar to his Changing of Seasons mix. Making his GET LOW debut is Miami’s beloved PEASANTS WITH FEATHERS giving you a sneak peek of his new album on Otto Von Schirach’s new Triangle Earth label. Local dubstep producers CALIGULA made waves around the country by winning HARD LA’s Remix contest for the their rework of M.I.A, and they’ll be throwing down for the hometeam this Thursday.

We strongly advise you to get your tickets for this event now as space will be limited, and make sure you get there early. It’s kind of a big deal. Do your job.
