    Sweatin’ Basel Week

    posted by Lolo

Art Basel week is here!  Over the years it’s grown into a massive bonanza of art with music, parties and surprises abounding everywhere!  You’ll definitely find us at the annual Art Loves Music concert on the beach – Canada’s METRIC are playing for free on the sand at 10pm around Collins and 21st.  As for the rest, peep the New Times and the Sweat Events page, and here’s where else you can find Sweat this week…

Local fashion/jewelry designer Nektar Di Stagni is curating the pop-up NDS Market in her space in the Design District (155 NE 38th St.).  Sweat has a sweet crate of vinyl and CDs there, and you’ll also find contributions from Roofless, University of Wynwood, and many other local arts entities.  It’s open daily through Basel from 11am to 7pm.

Thursday through Sunday check out the completely home-grown Miami’s Independent Thinkers fair at Casa Wynwood (2135 NW 1st Ct.) featuring a slew of local artists, live music every night, DJs, and their Sunday “Art Basil” farmer’s market event!  For the full artist and band schedule check the event page.

Friday at The Vagabond Basel edition is the after-party for MIT and Fountain, and features live performances by two of Miami’s most dynamic electronic acts: PANIC BOMBER + BFGF!  It’s also the premiere screening of Panic Bomber’s highly-anticipated new multi-media video for “Getting On My Mind” so don’t miss it!

And of course Sweat Records is open our normal store hours – noon to 10pm Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6pm Sunday.  Stop by for espresso (FUEL!) for your Basel week activities and see you around!

Tonight @ Churchill’s: HOW MUCH ART CAN YOU TAKE?

posted by Matt P (Roofless Rex)

Rat Bastard and Roofless Records present: Anti-Art Becomes Art #2: Art Babble 2010, a pre-Basel showcase of ambiguous intent and purpose. The Author is Dead, don’t let Him define your experience. Is self-proclaimed “a-political” art simply titillation for the ruling classes? DAMAGED ROCK. NOISE. HARRY MERRY. This one’s got it all. Special guests of honor include NEON BLUD, a searingly hot post-everything rock ensemble that bridges the gap between punk rock and psychedelia with delicious pagan aplomb. Check out their new, serious-as-hell 12” EP on Drugged Conscience, definitely going to make the end-of-the-year lists.

    BLACK FRIDAY GARAGE SALE

    posted by Lolo

This “Black Friday” Sweat Records is having its first-ever BLACK FRIDAY GARAGE SALE! ALL new LPs and CDs are 10% off, and any used record over three bucks will be $2 off.  We’re also marking down a TON of other toys and merch, giving away free swag, and there will be a bake sale courtesy of Emerge Miami!

Most people aren’t aware that we have a storage/warehouse space right behind the shop.  We’re getting rid of it at the end of the month and have spent the last several days going through all the records and miscellanea back there to clear it out and there’s some really cool stuff!

If you make music based on samples, if you like to scan old artwork, or if you’re just looking for some new random tunes to check out, EVERY record in our warehouse space will be three for a dollar! There’s everything in the world back there – from classic rock to ’80s Latin love jams to evangelist records to obscure freestyle to classical and kids albums to world music compilations to hip hop from every era and back again.

We’ll be open early (but not insane, wait-in-line, camping out early) at 10am and closing at our usual 10pm. PLEASE support local/independent business this Black Friday and shop Sweat Records!

John Digweed + DJ Craze Charity Event

    posted by Jsin

Thursday, Nov. 25th you can find one of The Vagabond’s owners behind the club’s decks. I know you’re thinking “we see that every Friday at The Vagabond with Carmel Ophir and UVS.” Well, I’m talking about their other partner, one Mr. JOHN DIGWEED! Yes, the legend himself is performing at our annual DIGGERS & SHAKERS charity event! If you want further proof of the man’s dedication to the club, check out this incredible 2xCD/DVD live mix he put out from WMC at The Vagabond last year. SEAN DRAKE will be warming up the Main Room in proper fashion.

But wait there’s more…This is a double header Grindhouse style musical smashup with DJ CRAZE repping for the (((SHAKE))) team! The World Champion DJ brings his turntable prowess to the Bar Room alongside our Residents A-TRAIN and DZA. Out on the Patio we have NOISE ARTISTRY spinning smooth sounds under the stars.

This will be a true ThanksGIVING as proceeds from the night will once again be donated to Community Partnership for Homeless, a not-for-profit shelter that assists homeless men, women and children in transitioning off the streets and on their way to attaining greater stability and self-sufficiency in their lives. They provide not only food and shelter, but comprehensive case management, healthcare, daycare, and job training.

We strongly advise to get your extremely cheap advance tickets here. Your job this Thursday is to party for a great cause. Do it.

    The 8th Annual ’80s Prom!

    posted by Lolo

Eight years ago at Soho Lounge (RIP) ’80s PROM was born out of  VICE, my old weekly ’80s party.  Since then the tradition of Prom has continued every single year on Thanksgiving Eve and it returns tomorrow night!

Join us at The Vagabond for an unabashedly cheesy and radical party featuring some of Miami’s best DJs throwing down retro tunes in all three areas, elegant decorations, some surprise performances, $5 Heineken or Prom Punch (vodka and Hawaiian punch) all night, and OF COURSE the famous photo booth with pix shot by Jipsy of nefariousgirl.com (hit that link for a few past photos).

It will definitely be another night to remember, advance tickets are available here or you can just roll up to the door.  We’re opening at 9pm this year for an extra hour of partying.  No school or work the next day so dress sharp and tease your hair!

Jose “El Rey” Flores Sings For You at Sweat Tonight

    posted by Jsin

Tonight we invite you to Sweat Records for “I’m Kind Of A Singer” – An Evening With JOSE FLORES. If you’ve heard The Getback, Pool Party, Jose el Rey or the Miami Bass Warriors, then you know this talented artist’s work. He’ll be performing songs from his 16-year musical career with fellow Getback guitarist, Gus Rod. Read up on Jose’s history, and a nice interview in the New Times Crossfade.

It’s also Jose’s Birthday, and though he’s a founding member of the infamous (((SHAKE))) party, don’t expect the madness that goes down there. This will be an intimate evening at Sweat, listening to the soundtrack of one man’s life. It’s an early show, so stop by at 10pm for the fuzzy tingle times. I’ll say this for my friend Jose who said it first, DO YOUR JOB.

    Strange Days #6

posted by Matt P (Roofless Rex)

This TUESDAY (11/23), Roofless Records presents STRANGE DAYS #6: Pop Music Telepathic Discussion Panel. Attendees are encouraged to psychically confabulate on the subject of Pop Music. Non-verbal discussion points include: “what is Pop?” and “is Pop good?” The special guest panel is comprised of local miscreants known for their visceral engagement of the Pop idiom, as well as their extrasensory prowess: hahahelp! (loose pop like a light-headed Yo La Tengo); DHARMA DAYS (new V.U. fuzz trio featuring Dion Kerr from Partial People and Chronic Youth, as well as Rachel Goodrich on bass); TRILOBITES (sunny vibes lo-fi pop from 3/4 of Flower Flower); and TREESA (icy, metallic, minimal pop). Show starts at 9PM and costs $3. Facebook RSVP

Strange Days is a monthly experimental music showcase featuring noise, post-punk, avant-garde composition/performance and beyond. This will be the last Strange Days of 2010, but the series will return in the new year.

Kill The Noise This Friday at The Vagabond

    posted by Jsin

The Vagabond is seeing a lot of world traveler and Miami’s favorite son, DJ Craze these days. From his special guest scratch appearance on stage with The Gaslamp Killer at the last Get Low to his charity show next Thursday with John Digweed. This Friday he’s sending his partner KILL THE NOISE over to handle his dirty work. If you don’t know, these two started a label this year by the name of Slow Roast Records. The label is distributed by the mighty Fool’s Gold Records and is also home to Klever and Miami’s Señor Stereo aka Danny Daze.

LA’s KILL THE NOISE is an avant-garde producer extraordinaire who’s helped change the electro-house game for the better. Expect a night of bass-heavy bangers similar in style to what you heard with Drop The Lime a couple Fridays back, or weekly with Mike Deuce. As always we’ll have 3 areas of awesome for all you party needs, and the early birds can get $2 PBR and $5 Russian Standard vodka before Midnight. Check the flyer below for full info, and get your tickets now for this killer show!
