This Friday at The Vagabond we are stoked to present two of Miami’s best guitar-based bands.
PLAINS are a four-piece indie rock band led by Mike McGinnis, with Jorge (Guajiro) on guitar, Jared (Morphologic) on bass and John Hancock (ANR) on drums. Below is their awesome video for “Innovator” and you can download the track for free here. Highly recommended if you like the Pixies, Blur, MBV and other loud-yet-pretty sounds:
BEINGS are a bit more punk… They list their influences as everything from Wire to GBV to Devo, they rocked Sweatstock and have been earning kudos all over. Their new 7″ comes out tomorrow on Morphologic’s Discosoma Records – it’s limited to 100 copies and each sleeve has custom artwork by drummer and renowned artist Beatriz Monteavaro.
Awesome monthly Sweat events back-to-back this pre-Halloween weekend!

Whether you’re going to MGMT or Massive, head over to Kill Your Idol (222 Espanola Way on the Beach) later on for the Official MGMT After-Party with IMMUZIKATION!
Mr. Alfredo Lapuz, Jr., former member of Velveteen Pink (the awesome GA funk-pop band we brought down a couple times), current member of Kuroma, also known as masher-upper extraordinaire IMMUZIKATION will be manning the decks. Check out his music page to hear his seamless blends – Phoenix vs PBJ, Daft Punk vs MGMT, and beyond. He knows how to start a party, plus we heard word of some special guests showing up… No cover!
P.S. For the downtown-bound there’s another after-party at BAR (28 NE 14th St.) with the Nightdrive crew.
As guitarist for the mighty Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Marcos Garcia burns up stages all over the globe. When he transforms into CHICO MANN, the time-traveling multi-instrumentalist-producer becomes a man on a whole new mission. That mission is to single handedly filled the 30+ year gap between afrobeat, afrocuban, freestyle and electronic music. Quite a feat, but after listening to his music, I’m sure you’ll agree that he’s more than able.
He’s taking that mission around the country as we speak, touring in support of his new album “Analog Drift,” released on Wax Poetics tomorrow. Pick up that album, and see him live at The Vagabond this Thursday. Be sure RSVP to shake305@gmail.com for awesome deals at the door. Do your job. (((SHAKE)))
“…This is the future of music, in case you didn’t know. [Chico Mann] has come from the future to show you how the past should have sounded. This time-traveling mastermind is basically the Jersey City Cuban James Brown of the Casio. You heard it here first…Welcome to the future past. Recommended.” -Turntable Lab
How much does Sweat love you? Enough to get you into SOLD OUT shows for free! With 203 entries, this was the biggest response we’ve ever seen to one of our contests! Unfortunately, there can be only one winner. Congrats to Wim, lucky commenter #47 who won a pair of tickets to see Phoenix and Wavves this Wednesday at the Fillmore! Stop by Sweat Records to pick up your tickets.
P.S. With the recent sold out shows (Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Phoenix), I hope everyone is waking up to the idea of getting your tickets early. Even for the smaller shows around town that do pre-sales. When you purchase tickets in advance, It’s usually cheaper, saves time, and you’re guaranteed to see the show. So the next time a show is coming that you really want to see, don’t sleep on it.
Wednesday night (9PM) at Sweat, Roofless Records hosts the fifth anniversary edition of the monthly STRANGE DAYS experimental music showcase (Facebook RSVP) This very special episode will feature a raffle (prizes = deliriously stupid), lazy DJing (pick a decent record, let it spin) and a diverse, cutting edge lineup featuring at least 2 cross-pollinated genres per band.
RAJA KHAN and AMANDA GREEN are no strangers to Miami’s weird party scene: Raja just played at Sweat this past Friday as part of the Free Flux Forces benefit, and their unbridled, Cream b/w of In Search Of Space psychedelic power rock left buzzing eardrums lusting for more; Amanda has been a fixture of outsider/experimental music in Miami for some time, and her performances range from broken toy nursery rhyme pop for garbage pail kids, to no holds barred squelch collabos with boy toy Luciano Guidini (together the pair forms WEIRD ALeister Crowley).
The rest of the lineup is comprised of THE FUTURE: fresh-faced, wide-eyed new bands feverishly forging the bummers and blisses of tomorrow. RARE FRUIT, solo ambient/electronic (samples + original music) from a former Voodoo Crystal, had the internet buzzing with his 2009 demo, and this performance will mark his valiant return to South Florida after some time abroad. MEAT is a new rock and roll (“fuzz grunge freakout” is the word in the alleys) group featuring muppet baby freaks from Ice Cream and Necro Fabulous. Making his South Florida debut will be EYELASH, with looping, dreamily intricate guitar stylings a la minimalist composer Steve Reich, and contemporary math rock bands like Battles (the first two EPs) and Ecstatic Sunshine. All for only $3!
Halloween this year is on a Sunday, so you know what that means – most of the good parties will be on Saturday night!
That said, may we present to you GATSBY GONE GOTH – SuperMarket Creative‘s annual Halloween bash and a tribute to all things ’20s with a dark twist. Last year their party was the ’70s-themed “Other Hollywood” (think Boogie Nights…) party at Awarehouse and it was definitely a night to remember.
This year it’s at the Raleigh Hotel (1775 Collins Ave.) and performing live in the ballroom will be sexy Toronto synth-pop trio PARALLELS! They’ve been featured on Kitsune comps, voted “Best Electronic Act” by Now Magazine (Toronto’s New Times) and are recommended if you like Glass Candy, Giorgio Moroder, Crystal Castles (in fact member Cameron Findlay was CC’s original drummer). Check out their video below for “Ultralight” off their latest album Visionaries:
Also performing will be Miami’s own PANIC BOMBER (who never fails to entertain and will be playing with his full horn section) along with DJs TOMMY GUNN + DEEJAY SMEEJAY. In the penthouse there’s even more going on with DJ sets by TROY KURTZ, MISTER DRAKE and ESS&EMM.
Not only that but SuperMarket’s infamous “vignette” will be returning – local stylist Danny Santiago is recreating Gatsby’s living room and photog extraordinaire Stian Roenning will be on hand all night capturing memories of our own roaring ’20s.
Advance tickets for the ballroom are available here for $20 (though we recommend you might as well just pay the extra $5 and get access to the penthouse too). There’s free Heineken from 9-10 and it’s just $5 for the rest of the night. Of course all costumes are welcome and it’s going to be an all-around excellent party so we hope you’ll join us! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to shoot us an email.
