Wake up, wake up, wake up, it’s the first of the month.
Tomorrow morning, Sweat hosts, Earthcakes cooks and Roofless Records presents: Brunch With The President. Food starts at 11am and the menu is 100% vegan: tofu scramble, veggie sausages, breakfast potatoes, breakfast breads, fruit + O.J., not to mention Sweat’s fully stocked + stoked coffee bar. Around 12:30PM we’ll kick off the bands: The President will be celebrating the release of his new full length on Roofless Records, LeBron, with the debut of his back-up band as well as the latest transmissions from Planet White House. Check out the Roofless Myspace and Filthy South for samples and teasers. Special guests Booga are veterans of the Gulf Coast no-genre junk scene, and play meaty jams structured around experimental percussion. Fresh from pinch-hitting at Strange Days #3 a few nights ago, Self & Other will kick off the festivities with delectable skullgaze and the guitarist’s jazz virtuoso pops on drums. I’m not sure if Sunday is considered the start or end of the week these days…begin/finish your week with a bang.
Major press is always a nice surprise! We are extremely honored to be featured in the July/August 2010 issue of the award-winning national magazine VegNews! It’s extra-exciting as it’s their 10th Anniversary Issue so the news should travel far and wide…
We’re featured in their “VegEscape: Miraculous Miami” Travel section and they give shout-outs to our signature drinks (in particular The Devastator, Unicorn Love Bomb and Vanilla Iced Rice Baby) and our ever-popular Earthcakes vegan cupcakes.
The article also sheds light on other great South Florida finds like the weekly Glaser Farms organic market in the Grove, the Fruit & Spice Park in Homestead, the Vegetarian Restaurant by Hakin in North Miami and more. Check out our write-up below and pick up a copy and a cupcake next time you’re at Sweat.
Congrats to Andrea C., lucky commenter #3 who won a pair of tickets to tomorrow night’s DEER TICK show at Grand Central! For the rest – don’t fret – pre-sale tickets are still available right here for $12.50, or you can also get in for just $15 at the door.
Here’s a clip of the band playing their track “Easy” live last year on KEXP, good stuff:
We’ve got an in-store poetry event Wednesday evening brought to you by the fine folks at the University of Wynwood. We’ll let the faculty explain what’s going down…
“We have been taught since childhood not to judge books by their covers, but this Wednesday night, UW will put that concept to the test. Conceived by UW Dean of Special Projects Peter Borrebach and hosted by the Miami Poetry Collective’s maitre d’ Jamie May, Miami Squares turns the poetry reading on its head. Instead of authors being in control, the audience members will decide the order in which the evening’s poems will be read, using only the poem titles as a guideline. To further spice things up, poets will not be reading their own works, instead lobbying along with the audience as to when each poem should be read, and by who.”
This event is FREE, and we have a feeling it will probably be hilarious. Do it!
Hello and welcome to my first-person blog post. I’m going to be on WVUM tonight, from 7PM to 9PM. The program: MIAMI TIME. The host: the incomparable Giovanna Stallings-Blanche. The plan: play some records (I dug into 3 separate personal collections for this one), plug some events (what are you doing Thursday, Friday and Sunday?), and generally try to make life trapped in a car on 826 that much more tolerable. If you’re not in your car or by an old timey radio, you can stream WVUM directly from their website (upper right hand corner, “click to listen”).
Tonight we Get Some at The Electric Pickle with a special guest from San Francisco. MOCHIPET (Daly City Records) comes to town bringing some future bass, glitch hop sounds that you can sample here on his XLR8R Mix. He joins HYDRAULIX ‘live’, URBAN J ‘live’ feat. MCR, SHADE, J-NASTY feat. SINDRI, THE WATCHMEN + HICUE upstairs. Feel the dance party vibes downstairs with COSMO, DIAS, LORRAINE SANGRE who just moved back from NYC. Try and get there early for half priced drinks from 9-11pm! Get Some!
Rain, rain, go away… we’ve got Vegan Brunch on Sunday!
We’re hoping it’ll clear up by then but either way come cozy up with us and some amazing food on Sunday morning. Earthcakes brings the spread and the full menu/info is on the flier below. The last two brunches were fun, oh-so-delicious and a great way to meet nice new people.
It’s all a la carte so you can stuff yourself silly for way under $10. Tell some friends and come out, 11am to 4pm at Sweat.
P.S. Brunch is usually every other week but next week we’re having a special BONUS “Brunch With The President” to celebrate The President’s new release on Roofless Records!
