Ana Mendez’ TRIBUTE To Joe Meek Wed. 2/3

    posted by Lolo

Don’t be fooled by Ana Mendez‘ tiny stature, she is a huge force of energy. She’s been performing and choreographing cutting-edge dance pieces around Miami for years and has a new show coming up on Wednesday that’s an homage to the life and death of legendary music producer Joe Meek!

Meek pioneered tons of studio techniques still used today and had a tumultuous life to say the least (you can read more about all that here).  He inspired everyone from Frank Black to Matmos, and Wednesday a TRIBUTE will be paid to him. His spirit will be evoked in a 30 minute performance of “absurd gesture and spatial exploration” by Ana and her all-male cast (including Psychic Youth, Inc. members artist Federico Nessi, Alex Puentes and Ricardo Guerrero from Animals Of The Arctic, Rick Diaz of hahahelp! and more), soundtracked by a custom reworking of Meek’s groundbreaking “I Hear A New World” by sound installation artist Richard Vergez, and featuring video-based scenic elements by Carlos Ascurra of Viking Funeral.

After the performance stay for live sets by Harry Merry (Netherlands), The Electric Bunnies, and Dino Felipe.  To sum it up, this is going to be insanely cool and you’d be a fool to pass it up, so go!  Full fliers and info after the jump.

Do your job, and get in free til 11 by sending your RSVP to shake305@gmail.com. We leave you with the brand-new music video for KETCHY SHUBY’s track “Expand Your Soul.”

Tonight: Wet Hot + Thursday: Nowhere

    posted by Lolo

This week at Sweat we’ve got two ridiculously great, FREE movie screenings for your viewing pleasure…

This Movie Monday, we’ll be playing 2001 cult comedy classic WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER!  Directed by The State alum David Wain, it featuring several of the cast members, along with hilarious performances by Janeane Garofalo, Chris Meloni and more.  It’s the store of the last day of summer camp in the ’80s and anything can and does happen as the campers and counselors look to hook up and make it to the big talent show.  Wear your tube socks and come to Sweat at 8pm.

Then on Thursday evening, we’re excited to bring you a screening of super hard-to-find 1997 cult flick NOWHERE by director Gregg Araki!  It’s the third part of his “Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy” (after Doom Generation) and features tons of Hollywood notables before they were famous.  Also like all Araki films, the soundtrack is amazing.  Read more in the New Times and come out!  No cover, starts at 8pm.

CONTEST: Make A Rachel Goodrich Music Video + Win $500!

    posted by Lolo

Hey filmmakers – we’re excited to announce a new nationwide contest! Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to create a new video for “Light Bulb” by local all-star Rachel Goodrich.  She’s been touring all over, had the song used in a national Crayola commercial and is making waves with her shake-a-billy sound but she needs more videos!

Listen to the track and hopefully little light bulbs of inspiration will be hovering over your heads… Then animate it, act it, or otherwise create some visual accompaniment for the song.  When you’re all done, just upload it to YouTube, tag it Rachel Goodrich, Light Bulb, Miami, and Sweat Records, and then send the link to info@sweatrecordsmiami.com.

Deadline for all entries is February 17th. The winning video will be announced on the blog Friday, February 19th. The winner will receive $500 and a premiere of the video at Sweat Records when Rachel plays an acoustic in-store on February 20th! Not to mention getting your work viewed and enjoyed by thousands of people on the ‘net.

Now, download the song below and make Rachel a masterpiece (or just download it and enjoy a free track!)
