Get your Borscht Shake this Thursday

    posted by Jsin

It’s delicious, really. This Thursday, July 30th Sweat has your night all planned out for you. Early on, if you’re not doing Sweaty Yoga, your destination is the Wynwood Social Club for the Borscht Film Festival Fundraiser. It’s a great festival and they need some funds to make sure the films come out professionaI. And we want professional as these films will be representing our fair city. They have the perfect description on their facebook invite, “The Borscht Film Festival showcases and commissions the work of local filmmakers under 30 telling Miami stories for an international audience. We’re trying to blow this city up and let the world know there’s a lot more to us than South Beach and blow.” Amen to that.

You can call 305-433-5848 for details on how to get into the super exclusive VIP Reception taking place from 6-8 PM. Everyone else can stop by from 8-10 to meet this year’s filmmakers and learn about their projects, take a sneak peek at upcoming films, and witness the unveiling of the new psychogeographic map of Miami. All while sipping on free CCCV (Rum and Jupina, as well as the Roman numeral for 305) and listening to Afrobeta live! Suggested Donation is only $10 for all this good stuff, and you get to go home with a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

Orrrr, finish your night at (((SHAKE))) and get even warmer and fuzzier! Your Borscht wristband earns you a free walk through The Vagabond doors. The $1 Colt 45s flow til Midnight and the CCCV drink is $5 all night. Plus grilled eats, nintendo, quart chugging, and party rocking by Doormouse, A-Train, DS, Keen One, Jose el Rey + Ray Milian doing a rare freestyle set!

Thursday will also be your chance to hear The Miami Bass Warriors new record played over club speakers for the first time ever! Come get some bragging rights and don’t miss this listening party. The album release performance will be announced soon ;)

Your agenda is set. Enjoy your Borscht Shake.

    Thursday: Sweaty Yoga at Sweat!

    posted by Lolo

Friends, yogis and yoginis!  We are taking advantage of the store’s current AC-less state and will be hosting Sweaty Yoga at Sweat this Thursday evening!

Our friend Fernando is a professional instructor and he’ll guide us all through a relaxing series of poses and stretches.

We’ll clear out the center space and mop the floors down with an organic cleaner shortly before class.  Then we’ll turn the lights down, spark up our favorite incense and get our stretch on!  Cold water and iced herbal teas will be available.  It’s only $5, a bargain for a full-on class, so we hope to see you there!

If you’ve never tried a yoga class, come out for the most relaxing workout you ever had.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments (a few years ago I got my yoga teaching certification myself so I know a thang or two).  Namaste!

Theater For the Rest of Us.

    posted by Andrew

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday at New Theater in Coral Gables, you have an opportunity to catch a once in a life time show – THE TONERS Live! For those of you not in the know, the Toners are a fictional Reggaeton band set on world super stardom. The play, brought to you by ForYouCanSee Theater and writers Alex Fumero, Lucas Leyva and Marco Ramirez, is a cross between a Max Fischer spectacular and Back to the Future by way of Hialeah. It follows the misadventures of a pair of hapless would-be musicians who accidentally travel back in time to the 2002, right to the start of the Reggaeton Boom. There, they face not-yet-ex-girlfriends, shady music producers and time travel paradoxes. Qué barbaridad!

As it says in the press release, this is not “a party, a play or a concert, it is a mutant, hybrid remix” of all three. Prior to the play, there’s an open bar serving Miami’s favorite drink, the CCCV – a mix of rum and Jupina, the delicious pineapple soda. Having seen the play myself, I can assure you it’s a charming and laugh-out-loud funny production made by Miami people for Miami people. And hell, it’s only $10.

The New Theatre is located at 4120 Laguna St.

Music Is A Weapon Friday Night!

    posted by Lolo

This Friday at The Vagabond we’ve got a live performance by MUSIC IS A WEAPON.  The members have been in tons of other local bands throughout the years and have honed their sound into an um, musical weapon!  You can read all about them in this New Times feature piece by John Hood and listen to some tunes on their myspace.

Opening for them will be Dyslexic Postcards and the whole night is a tribute to Vagabond family member Adam “Atom X-Mas” Hernandez who we sadly lost earlier this year.  No cover before 11pm as usual, see you Friday!

Tom Laroc VJ Performance @ (((SHAKE)))

    posted by Jsin

Tomorrow night at The Vagabond we have a big time guest coming to (((SHAKE))) with us! Celebrity DJ Tom Laroc plans to bring down the house with his interactive video/DJ performance.  If you’re wondering where the “celebrity” comes from, this man’s worked with the best in hip hop from Run-D.M.C to Tribe Called Quest to Nas to Jay Z and many more.  Did I mention the intro for his myspace is by Too Short?   Yeah, dope.  Here he is with the late, great Biggie Smalls (who’s also on the Sweat mural!)
