    Veggie Love

    posted by Lolo

Some of you may know that in addition to running Sweat and promoting music-y things, I’m also a proud advocate for not eating meat.  This month marks a personal milestone for me in that it’s been 15 years since I decided to give up the farm (animals) and instead choose the path of compassion and amazing veggie food.

As of last month I have a new regular column over at the New Times’ Short Order food blog called “Meatless In Miami”.  Check out my previous posts, and when a new one pops up I’ll link it on the Sweat page too.

Meatless In Miami: Lauren Reskin Talks Veggies
Meatless In Miami: Of Meat and Myth
Meatless In Miami: The (Next) Best Things
Meatless In Miami: Vegan on the Down-Low

Also, you can follow my veg-related musings on my Twitter feed – twitter.com/meatlessinmiami

If you have any questions I am always happy to answer them.  Viva la veg!

Black Moth Super Rainbow Listening Party Tuesday Night!

    posted by Lolo

We’ve got a full week of events at the shop, folks!  The Serge tribute earlier tonight was excellent, and we want to tell you what we’ve got going on tomorrow night…

Sweat and FIU’s WRGP radio station are teaming up again to bring you the official Miami listening party for the new album by BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW!  P-burg’s finest psychedelic, experimental folk-poppers have a new album coming out called “Eating Us” and it’s fuzzy and trippy in the best ways possible.  Come out at 9pm and we’ll be playing the whole thing, and we’ve also got a slew of awesome giveaways including BMSR’s entire back catalog, vinyl and the special “furry” edition of their new release!

The last WRGP/Sweat listening event for Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post-Pavilion” was awesome so don’t miss this one!

    Serge.

    posted by Lolo

Serge Gainsbourg was, to put it simply, a bad-ass in every way possible.  There’s no real English-language counterpart for him, but mix together a little Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, etc. and you might be getting close.

He was a French singer, songwriter, actor, author and composer, but also an inciter of controversy, a fashion icon, pervert, unapologetic alcoholic, bedder of the most beautiful women of the time (only Marianna Faithful famously turned him down) and a beloved national treasure.  He did disco, rock and reggae before it was popular and influenced everyone from Bowie to Beck.  He’s also the least-recognizable figure on Sweat’s “Wall of Idolatry” mural… until now!

Come to Sweat Monday night for a tribute to all things Gainsbourg!  We’ll be having the official listening party for his 1971 epic orchestral rock concept album “Histoire De Melody Nelson” which was only released in the US for the first time EVER last month!  There will be a drawing to win your very own copy too!

Not only that, but since it’s Movie Monday, we’ll be playing super rare, high-quality DVD footage from his 4 decades of musical output including his French TV special with Brigitte Bardot, promos, interviews and more.

The fête starts Monday night at 8pm and of course is FREE!

Young Love + Paper Route Tonight!

    posted by Lolo

Thanks to all who came out for our 1-Year Anniversary of Fridays at The Vagabond last weekend! Van*Gloria were glorious and Panic Bomber was the bomb!  This week we’ve got a special treat in the form of two awesome national acts that will be gracing the stage in the main room…

First up, PAPER ROUTE!  This melodic indie band from Nashville is gaining tons of momentum with their new single “Carousel.”  Check out the video for it on their myspace page.

Headlining tonight, we’ve got NYC’s YOUNG LOVE!  His energetic electro-dance-rock is sure to move your feet.  Peep his page for tons of videos (including one by Terry Richardson!), tracks, Twittering and more.

All this and $1 Red Stripes before midnight!  Can’t beat that.
