    This Week’s Parties In Pictures

    posted by Lolo

☆ Sweat Records presents a visual guide to 04/27-05/01 ☆

Tonight at Sweat we’ve got an encore screening of “CLOSING TIME” by local filmmaker Tony Kapel.  It features Miami art- and music-makers the TM Sisters, Jesse Jackson, Jen Stark, Manny Prieres, Rachel Goodrich and more.  The screening is FREE and starts at 8pm.

Tuesday is PSYCHIC TUESDAYS at Bella Rose.  Now in it’s 4th month, this underground dance party is truly worth checking out for music you swoon over but just won’t hear anywhere else (outside of your bedroom).  There’s also no cover and 2-for-1 drinks all night so if you too feel the need to bop and sway and goth dance to classic new wave, post-punk, industrial, and other dark favorites, this is definitely the place.  Join their Facebook group to stay in touch.

Also on Tuesday, if you like colors other than black, miss Pamela Wasabi (aka Miami’s own Rainbow Brite) will be hosting the COSPLAY WASABI FASHION PARTY at Sushi Samba on Lincoln Road.  This month’s color theme is BLUE so wear your wildest blue outfit as there’s a cash prize for the best costume.  11pm to 4am.

Wednesday evening up in West Palm Beach, SUNFEST kicks off with performances by Wavves, The Mae Shi, The Spam Allstars, Kinky and more!  The festival goes through the weekend (Cold War Kids Saturday night!) and the full info can be found here.

Wednesday at Off The Radar at The Standard, our old friend DJ SAUL (HIMSELF) is back visiting from China and will be doing a special guest DJ set!  Lords knows what kind of music he picked up out there but don’t worry as his tunes always rock a party.  8pm to midnight and parking is reduced w/ validation inside.

    Photobucket

Thursday night at (((SHAKE))) at The Vagabond is a yearly theme party all of Miami’s been waiting for…  QUINCES NUMERO DOS!  This year’s entertainment includes superstar DJs Doormouse, Alex Caso and Induce with live performances by Jose El Rey and Afrobeta,  plus food, cake and more sorpresas.  You can RSVP to shake305@gmail.com and don’t forget to dress for to impress…

This Friday at The Vagabond, we’ve got a very special event as it’s the official album release party show for AWESOME NEW REPUBLIC!  More on that tomorrow…

    Photobucket

Also Friday at GOO, there’s the opening for a homegrown art show called “The World That Summer” with live performances by Eli & Gyr and the Diet Cokeheads.  Goo is right by Sweat so swing by the store and check out our flier area for more of what’s up!

Bike Miami Days Are The Best Days

    posted by Lolo

Yesterday morning I woke up early and went down to Coconut Grove for this month’s Bike Miami. It takes a lot to get me out of bed on my only day off but it was so worth it! Bike Miami isn’t a race or a ride, it’s just a giant free block party with all the blocks closed off to cars so you can tool around and “explore your city in a new way.”  I don’t have a bike but I rented one for free at the event and walked around a lot too as it was a beautiful day.

The meeting point was at Peacock Park and most of the main streets were car-free and just so nice to ride on without the fear of being flattened by a SUV driver in the middle of a heated cell phone conversation.  The mayor, police chief, and tons of city people were there, plus tons of families, spandex cyclists, “fixies”, rollerbladers, skateboarders, runners, and everyone else you can think of. Honor Roll Music hosted the stage at the park with performances by ANR and Airship Rocketship. There was also a huge contingency there in orange representing the Netherlands Consulate – the Dutch practically are born bicycling so they’re all about supporting bike culture in Miami. Great pics are up here: Coconut Grove Grapevine

If you haven’t heard, Bike Miami Days are part of the city’s new initiatives to promote bicycle-oriented events, add more bike lanes, and to generally make the city more bike-friendly, which it should be as it’s so goddamn gorgeous down here all year round.  Props to Kathryn Moore and Collin Worth for making all this happen.

The whole day was inspiring. I’m now on the lookout for a sweet, two-wheeled ride of my own so I can represent at all the future Bike Miami Days, the next one being Downtown on Sunday, May 17th.  Purple-and-turquoise Sweat bike crew anyone??

P.S. More bike lanes are indeed in the works, but in the meantime, don’t you want one of these?

Bliss Out with GLISS Friday Night

    posted by Lolo

This Friday at The Vagabond we’re super excited to be bringing in GLISS from LA!  This trio’s sexy, hazy, psychedelic pop sounds remind us of a female-fronted My Bloody Valentine or BRMC.  In their live show they all switch instruments and Billy Corgan was so impressed he took them on tour to open for the Smashing Pumpkins all over Europe. If you wanna get your early listening click the pic below or we also have their brand new album “Devotion Implosion” in at Sweat!

    Photobucket

Opening will be local act LIFE OF SEALS who are awesome and totally worth checking out as well.  They played outside in the Garden and floored us in January so this time around they’ll take the stage in the Main Room.  Any band who lists “Brian Wilson, Depeche Mode, Tortoise, M83, Steely Dan, The Mercury Program, MBV and New Order” as their influences is OK by us!

Admission is FREE before 11.  See you Friday!
